Got Hurt Doing Madcow

Well… I started madcow last week. Before attempting this program i only squatted once a week. I have very poor flexibility so i always hated squats. doing this program was a real shock to my body. So i did mondays workout fine, squat, bench, row. I was a little tight when i did the rows (because of flexibility i guess, was tough just getting into good rowing position), wednesdays workout was squat, military press, and deadlifts.

so basically after wednesdays workout i was really stiff, im assuming once again its because im not used to doing this much core work back to back. So friday comes along and i stretch before hand, And im on my last set of squats, the weight is not serious but on my way up on the first rep, i feel a very very sharp pain in my lower back, I racked the weight and my eyes were blurry and it felt as if my whole body seized up. i felt like screaming like a wounded elephant. I layed on the floor for a good 10 minutes and walking up the stairs felt extremely painful, would have sharp pains in my lower back.

it has gotten slightly better now but after laying down on the bed for awhile when i go to sit up i have lower back pain, and sometimes when im walking i feel a jerk in my body. im taking a week break and if theres still pain ill see a doctor.

so whats the deal? did this damn madcow workout…F me up permanently?

Try to get some medical imaging if you can to see if it’s a disc issue. Since your in B.C. it should be easy. I had a back issue similar to your symptomology. I thought it would never heal. It hurt sitting down, lying in bed…etc. It took me a long time after my injury to say i was finally out of the ‘excruciating’ pain zone.

Hopefully what you are feeling is just because of tightness and you didn’t slip a disc or anything. If it’s tightness you can do a lot of work to not only overcome your injury, but get stronger than you were before. I would say try to figure out if it’s not a worse case scenario first.

Best of luck.

  1. Madcow did not hurt you so please don’t blame the program it was just an accident.

  2. there is obviously something more than just minor problem going on here. I would suggest going and seeing a medical professional rather than just asking an online message board. They will be able to help you out far more than anyone here can when they can physically examine you and take any necessary diagnostic imaging you may need.

Hope you get an answer and get on to the road to recovery soon

well last week i could barely walk without pain. I rested my back, went to the pool, and i feel much better. Pain is completely gone. I am going to rest for the remainder of this week. Next week i plan to do very light weight deadlift, bench, squat and the following week after that i plan on starting madcow once again? Would you all consider this wise? I am just worried that i might get that shooting pain squatting again, it was unexpected and the weight was not much at all.

You should probably do a lot of soft tissue work and mobility work on the hips first. IMO once you are able to sit in the “3rd world squat” position comfortably, your hip mobility is good enough. Do you have bands? They can be amazing for improving hip and leg flexibility. There’s no excuse for lack of hip flexibility. Just do the work… 30 minutes every morning of rolling, trigger-point therapy, and stretching will help immensely.

If you don’t improve your flexibility I bet you will get injured again in short order.

Thanks for the tips. i do need to stretch everyday. (sitting in the 3rd world squat for longer then a few seconds becomes unbearable). no i do not have any bands but i will look into different foam rolling exercises to do. Thanks again!
