Good, Bad, or Average Strength

i think a squat is safer cause its easy to pop out the bottom if you get pinned, unless you rip your quads off. IF you tear something on a leg press i imagine its hard to get out from that though. [/quote]

A year back I broke my left lower rib letting the weight down too far and loosing strength at the bottom - I know that problem all too well.

My own leg crushed my own rib…

yeah well a few ppl got to it before me but chances are ur range of motion is shit… typically when i had a lift that was way above my others lifts its because the form wasn’t there

Lol, i think he’s just saying this to show off a little. 945lbs is obviously a decent weight on the leg press. I press between 400 & 550lbs in reps of 6-10 for good volume.

I could maybe get a 1 or 2 with that amount of weight.

No joke - just trying to gauge the field as it were - I really have no basis to compare with - and my trainer seems to be impressed, but I am doing nothing really special just hitting them hard.

I am 163lbs, 5’6"

Honestly - (maybe a little showing off) - but heck I feel good about that level of weight - it shows the hard work is paying off…

Ahh shorty, no wonder you can do that. I have to move that same weight 4-7 more inches then you do. Good work though I havn’t checked my leg press at that weight in a while as I perfer squats and they hurt my back less. I THINK I can do that weight for 1 or 2 reps .

Yes - and my trainer is shorter than me, but he is a solid 20 lbs bigger … I got a way to go

A 20 Plate Leg Press is certainly something the average person cannot do.

But the average person cannot do 5 chin-ups either.

The only measure of pure leg strength that matters is the Squat. People may argue about whether or not the Leg Press is a good exercise, but the truth is that your Squat Poundages are the most honest indicator of your Leg Strength.

Andy Bolton does 1000lb Leg Presses.
Markus Ruhl does 3000lb Leg Presses.
Andy Bolton’s best squat is 1213lbs.
Andy Bolton has stronger Legs.

Leg Presses are not at all equal and equivalent.

A 405 lb squat is a 405 lb squat. A 600 lb leg press at one machine might be hot shit while it’s merely a nice warm up on another.

And that’s the truth. I don’t leg press all that often, but I’ve used some machines where 3 reps with six plates per side makes veins pop out of my temples, and others where I’m barely breaking a sweat doing 15 reps with four or five per side. They’re just that different.

Your 245 squat is more telling. Compared to Joe Blow off the street, you’re above average, but not by all that much.

Thanks bud - thats the truth - the squats are the deal - I hope to progress solidly on those then I will feel good.

It sounds like alot, but I remember 10 years ago back when i hardly even lifted weights at all, i built up to 10 or so reps with over 400 on my first ever try on the exercise at the high school weightroom. Not only had i never squatted before, but i could barely even bench 95lbs…to give you an idea of where my strength (or lack thereof) was at the time. Some people, like myself it seemed, are just naturally good at that lift.

I agree; if you squat at all, you know leg press is very easy in comparison.

I’m 5"6’, 150 pounds.

I squat 100kg (220 pounds) for 1 proper rep.

I’m below average.

If you get a few reps at 245 then I call you just average.

My opinion.

I find the incline leg press either hurts my back or plays silly buggers with my hernia. I have to stick to squats and although I’m no record breaker in the squat rack, there’s no pain or injury.

I’m with you spry, 100kg is good for me.
I’m now trying 100 for 5 then droping 10kg then another 5, and keep going til there’s only 10kg on the bar. This usualy equals around 35 reps with almost no rest and after 2 sets - I’m fucked.

Legs are growing well though.

lol most people have some of the worst form on leg press, worse then squat even. Do real exercises strong is 300+ bench 400+ full squat 500+ dead.

I wouldn’t use that machine as a gauge of anything. Not only have I seen people who look completely untrained put on tons of plates, but I moved a bucket load of weight myself when I was 150 lbs and had only been training a few months. It’s an ego boost machine. Once you’re squating over 4 plates per side at your weight, then people will pat you on the back and say “yeah bro, you’re pretty f*cking strong”. This post should beon BB.com with a nice ab shot taken on your cel phone.
