How Heavy is 'Good' for Squats?

is 2x your weight alright?

Yeah, If you can do twice your weight without straps/supports thats a pretty good squat!

2x bw + down to or past parallel = good!

A little bit better than last time until you can’t buy normal pants off the rack.

2xbodyweight if you are 140 lbs, no one cares, 2xbodyweight if you are 250 lbs, that’s a big boy.

Not to be arrogant, but yesterday I set a pr on my squat at 400 lbs (weigh 188), and yes it was past parallel; honestly, I don’t think my legs are all that impressive. Obviously I was happy with the squat…but it’s nothing superhuman by any standards.
I think we see a lot of these posts by people who want to be able to justify not working hard on their lower bodies…so as long as they can maintain a 2x bw squat, they just continue hammering away at the curls and bench press. Just my $0.02.

How heavy is too heavy ? If your asking that question you need to get your mind right…seriously. Or your not really in the brotherhood of IRON. The brotherhood of Iron knows no limits when it comes to squats. The only thing you should be worried about is shitting out your intestines. MY .02 cents.

look bedruz you got great genetics, that most guys simply dont have. Your lucky for that. But dont rest on your good genetics, in fact dont even consider yourself lucky. Go into the squat cage with a chip on your shoulder ok ?? A chip on your shoulder that sais " I am cursed, I will never measure up" And squat as if your soul depended on it. Thats the only way man…The only way.

you truly only know you are lifting heavey, is when you load the bar with so much weight that it starts to bend uncontrollably and when you unrack the weight, everyone in the gym stops what they are doing just to see you lift it and when you do everyone thinks your on juice, that is HEAVY.

you are not going to get that by doing 2x body weight.

2xBW is pretty good for any male. It is not great, but its more than most people will ever have on their backs. I remember wishing I could squat 2xBW. 5 mins after I hit it, I didn’t think it was that great and I wanted more. Such is the nature of the game. Being satisfied with your lifts is the worst mind set any lifter can have. There is always 5 more lbs.

Agreed. A couple months ago I was bitching about my new deadlift PR. It was 70lbs higher than it was almost exactly a year ago at that time, which I was reassured was ‘good progress.’ Not to me. I had my eye set on 405 and just barely missed 395.

It’s not just a relative number times BW, being very lean can help lower this number. Even if you’re light and short 315lbs should be the minimum for a good male ATG squat.

Keep in mind the heavier guys have to squat 2X their extra mass on the bar plus all of it that moves during the lift to match this number. So someone bulking may have to squat an extra 50lbs to match the same lift if they were lean.

180lbs X 2 = 360lbs + ~75% of own BW (.75*180)= 495lbs total weight moved

200lbs X 2 = 400lbs + ~75% of own BW (.75*200)= 550lbs total weight moved

This is oversimplifying things.

Your tissue leverage gets better as you gain weight. Your waist gets bigger. Your upper back thickens up and you have a wider shelf to carry the bar.

These factors help you lift more weight, but technically don’t have to do with ‘muscular strength.’

It becomes a different lift when you gain a bunch of weight.

Shit! I was excited to be repping 245 atg this week. Now I realize that I’m really just a little bitch. Oh well, guess it’s just more motivation to keep squatting.

I personally think it’s overcomplicating things haha. As soon as I see factors of bodyweight and leverage etc coming out it makes me think people aren’t just slapping on plates and going for it. Not saying you personally as I’ve read some of your posts, but it’s overanalyzing for no real point to me.

6x6 425 parallel with a BW of 207.

do you think this is building mostly strength, mass, or both?

Geez some of u guys must have some big legs.Ive never seen 1 person squat 300 pounds ATG myself at any gym around my area and i know some guys with BIG legs.

Most train their legs with really light weight and very high reps. Seems to work well for getting big legs but not really strong legs.

If i put 2x my bodyweight on the squat bar id have not only everybody in the gym looking id have people off the street and even their dogs would come in for a look.
