Damn you, truth and logic. You have foiled us once again.
Hes not American… English is not his first language. He just won a gold… chances are hes not even fully aware of whats going on. Watching that video it doesn’t even appear that that comment registered… I had to listen to it 3 times myself to hear it.

As I said earlier have any of yall competed in anything and had someone try and interview you right after… You’re not fully “there” yet… other things are on your mind.
LOL

If he thought he made a mistake, he would have apologized. He called the woman stupid on national tv for trying to get his name for editing purposes (when there are SEVERAL LEGIT REASONS she could need his name at that time).

Question, why the hell are so many of you making all of these defenses for this guy when it is clear he was wrong?

This is very peculiar.

What could be bringing this on?

I don’t the consider the guy in the wrong at all. He just won a gold medal and didn’t feel like identifying himself to aid some reporter in broadcasting the event.

If a guy comes up to me in the street and asks me to tie his shoes, I’m not going to do it. Maybe if he didn’t have any arms I would tie the man’s shoes, but otherwise the state of the man’s shoe laces has nothing to do w/ me.

He didn’t have to call her stupid, but he also didn’t have to answer any questions he didn’t want to either.

If it was important, the reporter should have identified him herself, and it would have been the polite thing to do considering the guy just won a gold medal and deserves at least that amount of recognition.

She probably didn’t even know what event she was covering.

What does tying some unknown person’s shoes have to do with a reporter from one of the largest news agencies in the world asking your name for identification purposes?

If you were worth interviewing, why would you act like an ass to the interviewer when she didn’t even mean any sort of insult?

“Could you state your name for identification purposes” does not sound like “I have no clue what event this is and don’t personally know your name”.

It sounds like just what it was, a reporter setting tape for an interview and getting her head ripped off for it by an arrogant athlete.

If you could name some of the major broadcasting companies in the world outside of the US I would be surprised.

Only one I can think of is the BBC, and its because I occasionally get links to some of their internet articles and its in English.

I agree that he didn’t have to call the woman stupid, and he also said bullshit on his local news. He also answered the rest of her questions respectfully.

I’m not saying hes not arrogant and I don’t know him personally, but if you’re going to interview somebody at least have the respect to do your own work to identify your own tapes for your own broadcast. I’m not going to tie somebody elses shoes, just like that guy wasn’t going to identify somebody else’s tapes.

This needs to end.

I love how people here are defending this idiot.

If he apologized after, it wouldn’t have been a big deal… but this guy is carrying on like he genuinely doesn’t get how he fucked up on that.

In my mind he didn’t… I would have, and have done the same thing(as far as being irritated with certain questions… not calling them stupid).

In this thread you can clearly see the difference in opinion… just agree to disagree.

Exactly. If this were Terrel Owens, I am seriously doubting this many people would be stepping forward to IGNORE AND FORGIVE what a jackass he was.

This guy fucked up and actually seems proud of it.

I guess I can see why if people are going to act like it is justified when it isn’t.

What does this even mean? That you are schizophrenic? In YOUR MIND? He called the woman stupid for a routine act in journalism. They sat there in an interview and basically laughed at the woman for it as well as the fact that she was American. How is it “in your mind” you don’t see that he fucked up?

It doesn’t matter if you are irritated by something ON THE INSIDE. What separates a professional from some random jackass on the street is HOW YOU SHOW IT.

He clearly doesn’t give a shit about how journalism works or how foreign journalists organise their tapes. He’s a speed skater from Holland who just won a gold medal for his country, he’s not going to stand there and do the journalist’s job for her.

In his own country he’s obviously some sort of sporting hero or whatever, he probably couldn’t care less what America thinks of him.

Whether or not he fucked up or he came across as an arrogant idiot probably doesn’t matter to him. He seems like a complete tool anyway.

The woman DOES come across as arrogant anyway, she clearly says “All right don’t, I don’t care” right after he says he won’t do it, then proceeds to ask the questions like the shit never happened.

Wait…so now you guys are calling THE WOMAN arrogant because she didn’t run off crying? I would imagine the average American journalist has heard worse than being called “stupid” so what exactly was her response supposed to be to NOT be “arrogant”?

I really find this interesting because none of you yet has let on as to why you are defending this jackass or trying to find everything you can wrong about the woman.

Asking someone’s name so that a tape can be identified isn’t doing the journalist’s job for her anymore than answering her questions. It is a fairly routine thing to do.

Well she clearly demonstrated to me that she couldn’t give a fuck about this guy when she said she didn’t care. Obviously she’s not meant to run off crying but if you are trying to interview the gold medallist as part of your job, it seems pretty dumb to say “whatever I don’t care…now answer my friggin questions” when the guy takes offence to some non-issue.

I don’t see how my post was defending him all that much, I called him a tool and was saying how “I don’t give a fuck about this interview” he was. It’s up to him if he wants to act like a prick or not, I never said he was right to do what he did. Although I can understand why he reacted like he did seeing as he seems pretty dumb and socially inept.

I was merely highlighting that he obviously doesn’t care whatever the “right” or non-arrogant thing to do would have been. So whilst you may say he fucked up, I would just say he is a bit of a fuck up in general and hence I don’t see why some people are so emotively talking about why what he did was wrong. He obviously doesn’t aspire to be some sort of role model. All this talk of possible endorsements and how this has affected his public persona etc seems pretty pointless as he clearly couldn’t give a shit about any of this, otherwise he would maybe show some remorse for his actions.

He just called he stupid. She deserves some credit for not returning an insult. Saying, “I don’t care” is GENEROUS considering no one anywhere else in the world gives a shit about this guy. That is a pretty natural defensive reaction to being insulted face to face with someone else and she remained professional while doing it.

No complaint there.

I’m talking about it because, like I said, I found that reaction interesting. I also know that many of the same people taking up for this guy now would NOT do the same if the situation were reversed and the athlete were NOT from that part of the world at all.

…X, do you know who Shawni Davis is? He won the gold medal on the 1000 meters last week, and he really doesn’t give a shit about media appearances or endorsments; he just wants to skate. Dutch media like him because he doesn’t give a shit…

If TO was asked to identify himself after winning the Super Bowl, he’d be pissed too. And I’d understand that.

Yeah, and if he called the reporter stupid like that he would likely be fined some large amount of money and then be made fun of and heckled on tv and the internet for it.

Here, the athlete gets excuses made for him and praise.

“He just called he stupid. She deserves some credit for not returning an insult. Saying, “I don’t care” is GENEROUS considering no one anywhere else in the world gives a shit about this guy. Yes I do see your point, I just thought it was worth mentioning seeing as nobody else had mentioned it, she doesn’t exactly take it graciously or act all that professionally herself.

“I’m talking about it because, like I said, I found that reaction interesting.”

Fair enough.

“I also know that many of the same people taking up for this guy now would NOT do the same if the situation were reversed and the athlete were NOT from that part of the world at all.”

I dunno man I’m not sure you’re right. I’m from the UK myself so for the sake of argument let’s say that an American Basketball gold medallist was asked by some British journalist (we don’t follow basketball at all over here) to say his name and what he had won straight after walking off the court, and in the heat of the moment with a bunch of different journalists waiting to interview him he says “Are you stupid? I’m not doing that” I bet there would be a significant amount of people who would laugh and say he was right to call the Brit an idiot for saying something like that. In fact I bet most British people would laugh too, but then we do enjoy it when someone makes a fool of themselves lol.

Yeah… I still wouldn’t give two shits if the rolls were reversed… I’ve done the same thing and I’m more insignificant then him. When I said In my mind… I meant it as my opinion, not sure how else it could be taken… people view the world differently.

I feel sorry for this guy. His coach has a huge target on his back. I wouldn’t want to be him after the Olympics.
