David Beckham hailed ‘the biggest sports star on the planet’
David Beckham appears to be conquering America.

The former England footballer is hailed as the world’s greatest sporting icon in this month’s edition of US magazine Men’s Health.
“Beckham is, without a doubt, planetary,” the magazine says. “As far as universally recognisable names in sports today, you have David Beckham. After him, who? Tiger Woods. That’s about it. Even the big names in US sports - Tom Brady, LeBron James, Alex Rodriguez - are unknowns in international waters. But just about everyone, everywhere, knows who David Beckham is.”
An interview with the ex-Manchester United star, now playing for LA Galaxy, describes him as “the most popular player in the most popular sport in the world”.

Becks, 33, graces the cover, a rare accolade for a British athlete. In an accompanying photoshoot, he demonstrates his sporting prowess indulges in a spot of weightlifting and boxing.
He reveals how a disparaging comment from a teacher when he was 13 set him on the path to greatness.
“You’ll never play for England because you’re too small and not strong enough,” the teacher said.
Beckham told the magazine: “As upset as I was at the time, it made me think, ‘I’m going to prove I can play football professionally.’ Back in those days, there were a lot of people who thought that to be a player in England, you had to have a full beard and be big enough to kick the ball as far as possible. It’s changed now. I wish I could remember exactly which teacher said that to me.”

He admitted to being “a really bad loser” but said his mantra is: “In the end, always be polite. Be honest. It’s all about how you handle the situation.”
And he said of his celebrity: “There is this madness around me, around my family. Without a doubt, out on the field is where I’m most comfortable, where I’m happiest, because I know what I’m doing and I know I can do it.”
Nevertheless, Beckham attended the Teen Choice Awards in Hollywood on Sunday, where he was voted top male athlete.
He took his three sons up on stage to collect his award and looked on proudly as three-year-old Cruz entertained the audience with some breakdancing moves.

He’s got nothing on Obama.

This is the politics forum, right?

I’m gonna sound like a cocky midwesterner here, but I can vouch for the fact that no one in Ohio really gives a damn about David Beckham. I’ll guess that MOST of the US doesn’t. Why? Because we have overpaid basketball, baseball, and football players committing crimes and keeping us busy lying about taking or not taking steroids to notice.

He’s not even a great player. At least, not nearly good enough to warrant this hysteria. He is much more of a pop culture icon who happened to be a good soccer player for a few years.

^
He’s no Zidane or anything, but don’t try to pretend that he wasn’t a fantastic player in his day.
Certainly he wasn’t that big, but he was certainly better than just ‘good’.

I think I saw a special on TV where they determined that Michael Jordan’s silhouette was the most recognizable on the planet.

Beckham is a nancy boy.

I honestly don’t give a shit about soccer or anything soccer related. I have no idea why this guy got as famous as he has. He’s a good looking guy, but no more so than any random good looking guy at the local club and he’s obviously not the best in his proffession. With that, I saw an interview with him and he came across as a pretty cool and humble guy.

Washed up with a hott wife and celebrity status.

Oh wait. this is Men’s Health, the magazine more concerned about stock portfolios, exercise ball-pink dumbbell lifting and winter coat fashion than anything remotely “Manly”

That’s exactly why the lemmings of our country love him: He’s good looking, marketable, and filthy rich. Those of the People magazine ilk eat this shit up on a regular basis…

I live in Wisconsin and no one gives a rip about him here either.

Apologies to the Eurpoeans T-Nation members, but Soccer sucks. I’ll take 1 Carlos Zambrano over 500 David Beckhams.

Bend this Beck.

they paid him so much money because the MLS saw an untapped market in the US. bringing beckam over to the US for his 250 million has already paid off.

soccer is gaining a lot of popularity quikly in the US.

Soccer is by far the biggest sport on the planet. Add to that fact, it is the fastest growing female sport on the planet. Beckham is in the eyes of women world wide “Dreamy”. It elementary and has little to do with being super talented.

Well, you are entitled to your opinion about the sport. But bear in mind Beckham is not representative of the sport, because he’s not even a very good player anymore, and he has never been as big as his popularity may suggest.

That is why I find the article above annoying. It is no wonder to me Americans find the sport boring, I wouldn’t watch Major League Soccer and David Beckham’s “LA Galaxy” either unless someone paid me.

He is the Anna Kournikova of soccer. He got fame on his good looks.

Beckham is famous because he was great at arching the ball. Thus, when he takes a free kick he can get the ball over the heads of the wall and it will come back down so it doesn’t fly over the goal. His niche is the reason he is famous, not because he was supposed to be the best all around.

“David Beckham hailed ‘the biggest sports star on the planet’”

I dunno about that.
Mariusz Pudzianowski is pretty big.

Diddo

I have to say RIGHT THIS SECOND Michael Phelps might be the biggest American Sports star for the next month or so until his olympic fame runs out after the games are over and he pretty much disappears from public interest for the next 4 years.

Tiger Woods is ALWAYS a big deal.

Lebron James is up there too.

I wounder who will be the big shit during football season this year. Isn’t Brett Favre returning? Not saying he’s the best human out there in the league, but he’ll probably be garnishing the most press at the beginning of the season.

I give Tiger Woods the title of America’s most famous athlete and probably the world’s most famous. Seriously, golf is bigger than a lot of us would like to admit. Ever time I open Sports Illustrated, almost half the content is dedicated to golf since it’s the only pro sport most American men play. Golf even has it’s own Channel and quite a few Magazines about nothing but golf.

I know very few dudes who can tolerate images of David Beckham within 1000 yards of their eyeballs. The dude is just tabloid Fodder. I know he worked hard at one point in his life to be a reasonably good soccer player, but there are thousands of ultra-dedicated athletes out there, and a few hundred of them could be as “Pretty” as Beckham if they lost some muscle, frosted their hair, and went to a tanning bed.

I find Tiger woods and Beckham to be not too impressive. Sure they are good at their sport but to consider them “elite athletes” is bullshit. People like Lance or Dean Karnazes or elite athletes. Fedor is an elite athlete, etc.

Tiger Woods dominates his sport like no one else dominates their sport right now. You can’t ignore what he’s achieved whether you believe golf is a sport or not. The guy isn’t famous for his good looks. He’s famous for being the point that the rest of his sport revolves around.

Are you retarded?

You don’t go out much, do you?
