Goal Setting Formula?

I have a question for everybody regarding strength training. My current goal that I have set for myself is to drop down to 10% body fat and am doing great so far with this but I am wanting to set some goals for strength training.

I recently picked up a power rack, barbells etc and have made myself a little home gym. I am currently 185 lbs and 5’7.5 inches tall. I am wondering what would be a good target or goal to set for myself with regards to bench, squats and deadlift? Is there some forumula you powerlifters use? I mean a little guy like me can’t possibly lift as much a big fella who weighs 300 lbs right? given their training is the same. Basically I am wanting to strive for some target max in the distant future but am not sure what are reasonable figures to aim for.

Goals are nice, even essential to have, but I have two observations to make about them.

  1. Don’t set your goal based on what someone else is doing. You write that you can’t possibly do as much as a 300 lber. Who cares? If you’ve improved upon where you are right now, you’ve suceeded.

  2. Goals are temporary. I.e., let’s say that right now you bench 250. Great, 275 is a nice round number, 25 lbs is a decent jump, aim for that … just know that the day that you get 275, you’ll want 3. Then you’ll say to yourself, “the hell with it, 300 is a round number, but I want to get 3 PLATES on each side: 315” then once you get 315… you see where I’m going with this?

This is a journey where we usually don’t know our final destination, man.

The first goal you should have is to lose that attitude. You have already limited yourself in your mind.

I watched a guy attempt to bench press 900 pounds at a meet today. You think he ever said, “There is no way I could bench a Volkswagen.”

Answer: Fuck NO!

Test your maxes, then beat them.
