I have a question for everybody regarding strength training. My current goal that I have set for myself is to drop down to 10% body fat and am doing great so far with this but I am wanting to set some goals for strength training.
I recently picked up a power rack, barbells etc and have made myself a little home gym. I am currently 185 lbs and 5’7.5 inches tall. I am wondering what would be a good target or goal to set for myself with regards to bench, squats and deadlift? Is there some forumula you powerlifters use? I mean a little guy like me can’t possibly lift as much a big fella who weighs 300 lbs right? given their training is the same. Basically I am wanting to strive for some target max in the distant future but am not sure what are reasonable figures to aim for.
Goals are nice, even essential to have, but I have two observations to make about them.
Don’t set your goal based on what someone else is doing. You write that you can’t possibly do as much as a 300 lber. Who cares? If you’ve improved upon where you are right now, you’ve suceeded.
Goals are temporary. I.e., let’s say that right now you bench 250. Great, 275 is a nice round number, 25 lbs is a decent jump, aim for that … just know that the day that you get 275, you’ll want 3. Then you’ll say to yourself, “the hell with it, 300 is a round number, but I want to get 3 PLATES on each side: 315” then once you get 315… you see where I’m going with this?
This is a journey where we usually don’t know our final destination, man.
