Gloves or No Gloves?

I even rip some skin off one day but never thought about using gloves anyways.

Well thanks, I’m gonna go get myself some chalk. Anyone want a pair of gloves?

what is the big deal about gloves. i think the most important point is that u workout. i wear them now before i didn’t no difference. it is up to personal preference

I vote no gloves. Calluses are fun.

I do sometimes use straps for heavy rack pulls, when the weight I want will exceed my grip strength. And like a poster above said, just add in extra grip work later to bring it up to speed.

Up until the last 3 months I never wore gloves, I also would have a fair amount of calluses. Evidently girls with calluses aren’t okay, at least to the lady at the beauty shop who would run the cheese grater over my hands every other month making tsk tsk noises. I now have certain lifts that I have to wear gloves or the tread on the bar hurts, thanks to cheese grater lady. Long and short it’s okay to wear gloves if you’re a girl otherwise probably not.

I agree. I don’t get this “you’re not a man if you wear gloves” attitude. Every time this subject comes up you hear this crap from a lot of the posters.

Well I’m experienced, lift quite a lot of weight, and wear gloves. I’m sorry, I don’t like the calluses and neither does my wife.

Wear gloves if you want to wear gloves. Don’t wear gloves if you don’t want to wear gloves. Just don’t give a shit what anyone else thinks.

ive only recently started to use gloves when i ripped my calluses off and as soon as they healed did it again. i only paid a few bucks for em and think im planning on useing them only when i need to give my hands a break from being torn apart. also means the GF has stoped ripping of bits of skin unexpectedly. however when i took them off to do farmers walk the other day it fell rather hard to hold onto, im not sure how much the difficulty can be atributed to the back workout i had just finished but i didnt like it. i think they may become a very rare tool for me. just on a side note i have no current intention of using straps or a belt at this stage or in the future as i see it

I coulda sworn weight lifting had to do with MUSCLE strength, not hand toughness. But, if you pussies get your kicks and ego boosts from ragging on people who wear gloves, go right ahead, doesn’t bother me

“Should I wear gloves?” (eye roll)

Ever notice that the most pathetically weak guys at any gym are always the ones with all the gear- gloves, a Valeo belt which is used for the duration of the workout, straps, flash clothes, head bands etc?

The strongest guys- boots or old sneakers, and any old t-shirt and shorts or trackpants.

Hey, what about pull-ups Zeb, do you think they are effective for building a big back? (wink)

Eh, not I don’t agree with that totally. I wouldn’t say I’m flashy, but I do have football gloves which i use in most lifts, I have a towel hanging from my waist (one of those small hand towels) I have my iPod on my left arm in an arm carrying case, and i’ll usually wear an IU armband (just in case I get distrated and I need a reason to remind myself of what I’m there for.) I keep the kicks fresh (some nice Nike cross trainers) except when deadlifting or squatting, then’s it’s time to bust out the Chuck T’s… now I’m thinking… am I flashy?

No, actually I think Barbbell or T-Bar rowing are better for back size.

Don’t use gloves to train.Using gloves during training is like using a condom during sex.Get my point!!Don’t you want to feel the bar.Use chalk and if your gym doesn’t allow chalk, use it anyway I do.

A lot of the stigma on gloves is based on the gimpy looking newbs that flock into the gym with all the gear to start their new lifting career.

They don’t even lift enough weight to need equipment yet!

Anyhow, I pick at my callouses between sets… maybe I’m marking my territory or something.

I don’t think wearing gloves makes you less of a man. But I haven’t been using them since I started lifting seriously. My girlfriend is lovin the calluses so long as I keep my hands from getting rough and dry. And I like feeling the steel. I feel more divorced from the lift if I use gloves. But if gloves help someone lift, then I think it’s fine to wear them. My hands do get sweaty and can impact my lifts towards the end of the workout. So, I’m going to look into the chalk from ironmind that bino was talking about.

I think that’s probably good. A girl with huge calluses would bother me a little bit. Maybe not bother, but I’d definitely notice it.

wear gloves or don’t … its a personal preference.

i wear gloves and i don’t give a shit what people think.

jaystyles

I did deadlifts with a trap bar and no gloves today. My hands hurt, but pain is good…and my grip was better than when using gloves. And i take back the thing about all the experienced guys not wearing gloves, I’ve seen that thats not the case.

um… in the winter… when it’s frickn minus ten i’m wearin gloves. is that okay with you guys ? i also wear a hat, boots, and a couple of sweatshirts. also sometimes i piss into the old sink at the back of the garage. but i usually take the gloves off to do that.
