Girl Squats

Well Stardust, you are right about it being a nice boost to train around other PLers. Are you with the CPU, there are a heck of a lot of good clubs in Ontario, maybe Ouroboro could hook you up if you are interested.

I am going to have to take some vids of the women at my gym, since we seem to be an anomaly. There is one girl there who sits down ass to ankles in the hole and stays there for a good 20 seconds each rep. I asked her why once and she said she likes the “stretchy” feeling when she stands up LOL. She squats with 135, never more. I am going to ask next time I see her if I can make her a star ( ;
Haha, well that’s different! I have never seen someone sit for 20 seconds in the hole, but that sounds like an interesting variation.

Right now the only powerlifting club in my area (I’m from Toronto) is either The Anvil, or BANG Fitness (though BF isn’t strictly powerlifting), and they’re both at least an hour away…not having a car and not having a license doesn’t help, haha. I wish they would open some more up closer to my place.

BTW this video wasn’t staged, a couple of people have asked me that, haha. From what my friend tells me, they squat the same way every week in the gym, in the same group.

omg it’s girl squat girl! ^ the internet phenomenon!

260 raw that is amazing.
FTR, that would impress the pants off me in any gym!
Now that’s the video people should be talking about.

Curious what your max squat or what are you hoping to hit at the meet?
I have not tested my max squat recently…some months ago it was 260, with just a belt, but I know it’s gone up since then. I am hoping to hit somewhere around 285 during my meet (and more would be even better!)

I don’t use wrist wraps, knee wraps, or any sort of gear.

And now we have the winner!

hahaha. good to have you drop by. and 135 deep and raw is still very good, regardless. And you are a competitive lifter, so I know (groan) that is not impressive for you, but for the average jane, it is.

while at cross fit nor-cal, my wife did a 250lbx3 no belt hook grip deadlift, and everyone there was freaking out. it was an average lift for her at the time…

point being things are all relative.

for example, I was pretty proud of a 120kg power-c&j I did the other day…as a old guy with tons of injuries, I was pretty pleased, but compared to what I was doing in my 20’s when I was a college shot-put athlete…well, it was pretty sad.
First of all… it’s really difficult for me to read your post without your avatar distracting on the side there, haha.

250x3 raw as a deadlift for a girl is not bad at all, and I can see why some people were shocked about it. You rarely (if ever) see a girl lift that kind of weight, so congrats to her!

Of course, if you get a big forum full of powerlifters it would SEEM that it’s a popular sport, but then you remember how many millions of people there are in the world, and suddenly realize just how small the odds are that you’ll see a chick walk into your gym and start deadlifting some big boy weights. :stuck_out_tongue: And you’re right, strength is relative. What might be impressive to one person may not be to the person doing it, or to someone else.
well said…

when you are swimming in a shark tank…you dont realize how many MORE goldfish there are out there in the world…haha…

some of the RAW numbers I hit on various pressing movements when I was younger did not seem to much to me, it made me average compared to the monsters I trained with…

training next to a 6’6" 330lb 70’ shot-put olympian, who is doing casual reps in the hang power clean while talking to you, with your max full clean weight…well, is a very humbling experience, lol

but years later, now working out at a commercial fitness center for the last few years, and a site like this, what I was doing actually was pretty good. Not great, but pretty decent.

Oh, and I have been taking some heat over my last few avatars…cant help that I am a big booty freak!

got a few PM’s about how they make pages run slower and getting people in trouble at work etc.

I am thinking about changing it…thinking about it…

Thank you! I don’t have a power rack at my gym, so I have to place a bunch of plates under the squat rack so I can hit depth (I’m only 5’2, haha). I’ll try and get a video soon, and if I can’t, then I’ll put up my meet vids at the least!

I just try not to compare myself too much to other lifters. I could easily feel “meh” about some of my lifts in comparison to some other very strong people, but I use it more as motivation than anything.

Just remember that at some point in his life, that 6’6" Olympian was a gym noob too

Don’t change it. It has character, hahaha.

Don’t do it.
No mercy for the technologically backward!

(now that I have a super-duper-mega-connection hahaha)

ok…it stays…

had to edit for, um, personal reasons…

This sounds like a very good idea!

Some people are just strong, or sort of strong. My son is approaching a triple bodyweight deadlift at 16 already after a year or so or hard training and his sister pulled 150 x 7, and 170 at 115 lbs the first time she tried a deadlift.

Jr. is hitting a double bodyweight raw squat now also. And he told me that the heaviest deadlift he has seen other than him in the gym he trains was 225 x 2 with gloves and straps. And the guy wasn’t 132 lbs like my kid.

Fantastic potential right there!

At first I wanted to know why some of the ladies here weren’t impressed by the video, as my girlfriend is literally one of the small handful (as in 3 or 4) of girls that I’ve ever seen do a full squat. After reading through the thread though, I’ve realized that most of the females here that squat correctly are Canadian. You Canadians don’t pamper your girls, I guess.

Thanks, I started them off right. Teaching them correct form, taking care of them bodywise, ( I’m an ART trained chiropractor), and they have access to all the best toys. allegedly bought for rehab equipment for my patients.

Com’n Granny, time for speed squats in the monolift.

Canadian toilets are lower.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go ATG…never thought about it. I know I hit parallel and that’s good enough for me right now.

Absolutely…and cold as fuck. Trains you for speed out of the hole.

Lucky kids!
Mine just started early this year with oly lifting and she has taken to it well. I tried for years to get her interested in a sport, and I’m thrilled she settled with weightlifting. I really think it’s the best thing you can do for kids, getting them into some kind of competitive athletic pursuit. This is from a meet last weekend, 49kg C&J.
And yes, she squats too ( :
