I hesitate to get involved in this. Gay people don’t bother me at all, but I do find effeminate guys (straight or gay) irritating as hell. I’ve hit more than one guy for picking on a gay guy in a bar, and my little sister went through a “gay phase”.
However, one thing about Rumbach’s argument bothers me. How far are you expecting people to take acceptance of things they find repulsive or morally wrong? Do we have tolerate bestiality or pedophilia or necrophilia? Am I allowed to make fun of people who get off on being pissed and shit on? Where exactly is the line of tolerance drawn?

Yeah, I can imagine a high school kid sitting in his room at night thinking, “To be more popular, should I get a tattoo, or start having sex with men? I think I will start having sex with men, that seems pretty popular this year.”
I assume you have urges to have sex with women. Do you think it would be possible for you to give up these urges and begin having sex solely with men, just because it was popular?

No. It is just that the environment is more accepting of homosexuals and thus more homosexuals than ever (but not all) no longer feel like they need to hide their sexuality. There are not thousands of new homosexuals, there are just thousands of homosexuals who no longer feel compelled to pretend to be hetero.
doogie, sex should take place between consenting adult humans. If it is alive and can’t give consent (animal, child, comatose, et.c), then leave it alone. If it’s not alive and it’s a human, I feel that the human at that point cannot give consent, unless there was a part in their will about being used for necrophilia post mortem. Dead animals are a tough one for me. I would probably put them in the same category with dead humans.
However, Rumbach’s post wasn’t about accepting homosexuals, just treating them with a little dignity.

All three of those examples violates a person/animal who is not able to consent to sex. Homosexual behavior is between two consenting adults, unlike the examples you provide.

There is nothing about those sexual activities that lends itself to public disclosure. If you enjoy golden showers, nobody knows except your partner. Homosexuality does lend itself to public disclosure however.
It is difficult to lead a fully happy life as a homosexual if you must hide it. You couldn’t hold your partner’s hand in public, live together, vacation together, go to family or work activities together, etc. On the other hand, the example you provide above in no way needs to be public in order to be fully “enjoyed”.
Also, I am not aware of anyone being beaten up, killed, etc. because they were into golden showers. Can’t really say the same thing about homosexuality, can we?

Animals can’t give oral consent, but they sure can otherwise. Like if a dog starts humping a chick…I’d say the dog gave his consent
ZEB - you seem fixated on male-male sex as the definition of homosexuality. In fact, I find it a bit weird that this is the only image you can conjour up.
Do you find the actual process of childbirth disgusting? I mean, blood, fluids, ripped vagina, it’s pretty nasty. But does the process of giving birth define having children?
The gay people I call close friends (and relatives) live happy, full, normal lives with their partners - they buy houses together, they cook meals, they have fights, they go to the grocerty store, they curl up on the couch to watch a movie.
Homosexuality isn’t defined by sex - it’s defined by love. And that love is insulted, demeaned, and written off as disgusting by people like you. I’m not asking anyone to accept, embrace, dance up and down over gay rights. I’m asking that people think about who they might be hurting when they speak.
As I’ve said once before, anyone who gets what I’m saying has already gotten it, and those who disagree aren’t going to have their minds changed. I’m not asking for censorship, or for rules and regulations. I’m asking, as BenTyson said, that everyone be treated with dignity around here.
It’s telling that some narrowminded people can’t believe that Andy can make this argument without being gay. Do you think that everyone who agrees with him is, too?

All of the above listed have been belittled in some fashion or another on these very forums and I can’t see how it’s ever a bad thing. It’s how we cope with folks who might be different from ourselves. If we’re able to have fun with different types of people through a little ribbing, well, that to me seems like the steps one takes towards tolerance. Not anything to be offended over. Am I off base?

I can love my best friend Hank. However, I do not desire to have sex with him. If you are attempting to claim that what homosexuals do trancends sex I agree. However, that does not change the definition of homosexuality.
My desire to encourage others to speak out regarding homosexuals, or any other topic of concern is rooted in my strong belief that freedom of speech is far more important than any homosexuals percieved right not to be offended.
I think everyone needs to be responsible regarding words spoken and their actions. I believe that I stated such several times in my staunch defense of the right of the homosexual to live peaceably. In addition to this I have not called anyone a derogatory name, even though I had some thrown at me. I seek to offend no one. However, and more importantly I seek to place myself squarely on the side of free speech!

sorry, you are right i dont keep up with all of the happenings with gays in america. i do not care if gays are not allowed to marry. frankly i am glad they are not allowed to marry, because imo it makes a mockery of the entire marriage process. i do not feel that inalienable rights are being taken away simply because gays are not allowed to marry. and therefroe gats are treated as equals in this country. are they entitled to due process? can a gay eat in the same restaurant as me? can you vote? can you pack up and move to san francisco when you please?
for once congress has done something right and not allowed gays to marry in all states. if you choose the alternative lifestyle you choose all that it entails. marriage is a right that is unique to a man and a woman. you know the ole’ adam and eve, not adam and steve.
