Front Squat 12 Week Challenge

I haven’t done much (any?) real squatting lately. I bought a 150lb med ball and pick that up and drop it a few dozen times each day. Decided to throw on my 45lb weight vest and got a few reps. Hoping if I keep this up it will translate nicely to front squatting at the end.

300 for sets of 5, 5, and 3. I’ll deload next week and then move to lower reps to get ready for test week.

285 for a single, which is a 25-pound PR. Sounds better than it is since this is my second time doing the movement in like six months lol.

Lol! My 7 y/o filmed my set two days ago and kept panning between weight and me saying “wow, look at how much dads lifting”. I used everything for a double and couldn’t bring myself to post it. Have to wait until this weekend to attempt again.

And 110 x 1 (242lbs) from last night.

Right hip does not want to play and will not go into external rotation. Really need to fix that

I’ve been feeling good about my front squat numbers these days, so I went back to some old training logs to compare my current numbers to my all-time strongest in January 2014, when I was competing in powerlifting. I cross referenced those logs with some videos I had taken, and was on one hand pleased to see that I’m in the ballpark of my best (305x5 now vs 315x5 then, at the end of this video) but on the other hand not quite there, since back then I did it with no belt, at a bodyweight about 30 pounds lighter, and after tons of heavy back squats. In hindsight, with all that intense squatting in one session, its no surprise I wore my hips down to nothing and subsequently had four hip surgeries including a full replacement! At least I’m older and wiser now.

Will hit some front squats this weekend, been hitting the SSB more frequently than front squats but I feel like the carryover will be nice, in any case.

Won’t make deadline here but definitely up for getting the front squat again.

Top set after long workout and zombie squats was 100 kg X 3 very deep.
