I’m taking a state trooper exam in a few weeks and the fitness test has a bench press test w/ a universal bench(lie on back, start at bottom portion of the lift). I don’t have access to this equipment so I wanted to see if anyone knew the correlation btw the two. thanks
Does it matter? I’m sure that greater free weight BP = better Universal BP. Anyway, you aren’t going to be able to change much in a couple weeks, unless you haven’t been working out at all. I’d research some powerifting threads and articles to find out how to hit your max on testing day.
I just want to test at what they rank the highest level-which is benching about 1.4xbw. I am at this level with a regular bench, I just also hope to be on a ghetto universal

If you can push up the required weight on free weights you will most definately push it up on Universal. Probably more.

You’ll have no problem. I remember many years ago in college (many, many years ago)stunned that I was pushing 300 on a universal (at 155lbs bw) because I couldnt go near that with an O-bar. Just do a couple of sets to get used to the lack of range of motion compared to free wghts.
-good luck
You should do fine. We had a universal in high school that everyone could easily press 50lbs more than with a barbell. The univeral won’t require any stabilization, just lie down and push hard in any direction, it will do the work for you. Good luck!

So you’ve called EVERY gym within a 50 mile radius of where you live asking whether they have this piece of equipment, and if so, whether you can buy a day pass to use it?
I grew up in BFE, and had access to such a machine. If I didn’t but was going to take an important test, I would find one. I’d call around. I’d even ask the state police if I could try theirs out.
What I would NOT be doing is looking for reassurances on an anonymous message board.

He’s probably not looking for someone to be an ass either. He just wanted to know if anyone knew how they correlated.
Yes, he could call around, and we don’t know if he did or not. Regardless, cut him some slack, he hasn’t gone out of his way to be a dick towards you.

wow-all I asked for was the correlation. I would have been concerned had there been a negative correlation, but since I can fit the standard on free weights, I’m not. As for now I’m going to work on benching from the bottom portion to get used to starting the lift there.
thanks for the help guys

The last time I used a Universal was about ten years ago. Similar situation as you. At the time I was benching around 275 for sets using free weights. Using moderate exertion I hoisted 360 on Universal.
Being that you want to get into Law Enforcement it’s a good idea to lift weights anyway. Good luck to you!
CaliforniaLaw, stop being a dick!

Was my advice (call around and find a machine rather than ask a bunch of anonymous people on the Internet) off base? Nope.
As usual, I’m a “dick” because I don’t say things like, “It’ll be okay.”
Listen, if this guy really wants to be a cop, he should do whatever it takes to ace that test. Taking the easy (and perhaps unreliable) route ain’t the right way to go.
Most of you are less concerned with helping someone succeed, and more concerned with being “nice.” In my book, that makes you guys the real dicks!

It’s your delivery that makes you a Dick.
He didn’t ask for an easy way out, he asked if there was a correlation. Don’t go out of your way to find arguments.

It’s not your job to get the members on this site in-line. This guy asked an easy, casual question.
You said it yourself, "As usual, I’m a “dick” because I don’t say things like, “It’ll be okay.”
Even you think you’re a dick.

Of course it’s not my “job,” but I can certainly state my opinion: Anyone who doesn’t seek out every resource obtainable to help him meet his goals sucks.

No. He is about to take a very important test. Yet he’s willing to rely on the assertions of people on an anonymous message board concerning whether or not he will pass that test. 'Nuff said.

Do you know what it means to put “quotation marks” around something?
In any even, those of you giving this guy the “easy out” are dicks. You should tell him like it is: The test is too damned important. Don’t rely on the assertions of people on an anonymous message board. Try out the damned machine yourself.
If you have not already, you may want to play around with a smith machine BP. Just to see how a fixed, supported path feels in comparison to free weights.
My girl and I were at one of her friends baby christening after party. there was an old universal machine in the fitness room of where the party was being held. My current max on free weights is 315. With no warm up, I did 300 [as high as it went] for the easiest set of 8 in my life. You should be able to knock off quite a few reps, so I wouldn’t worry about how you’re gonna do.

Why the fuck are you so hostile on everyone else’ posts. Look for my replies to your posts in the near future.
The OP wasn’t asking for help to cheat on the test. He wanted to know the correlation.
Do you even proof read your posts? And you’re gonna bag on my grammar? And the quotes, they were cut and pasted from your post. Dipshit.
It just seems to me that a few people around here really get into the habit of combining prick remarks, sarcasm, and derogatory comments in an attempt to pass it off as condescending intelligence.
Though, given the fact that, as anonymous as this message board may be, it is STILL a weight lifting oriented site, I don’t see the problem with asking the people here for their opinions on something like a weight lifting subject.
“Anonymous” is by no means synonymous with “actively trying to screw you over,” by the way. I’d bet you can trust SOME of the people on this site when it comes to weight lifting material.
Then again, I haven’t been here long.

CalLaw,
What better resource could he use than a website dedicated to bodybuilding/strength training to ask a strength question? Most people that use this forum are relying on the information provided by anonymous users. They are asking for the opinions of people who may have more experience than they.
You are the only one who hasn’t answered his question. Probably because you don’t have anything useful to say on the topic.
You argue well, I’ve seen your posts. My guess is that you either are or were the captain of your debate team. You probably even won a varsity letter for it. It still doesn’t mean you have to be a dick or “dick” about it.

No, I don’t proofread my posts. I work with several browsers open (a research database, random research-related Internet searches, and T-Mag), so I “post and forget.”
If I ask a really lame question, I hope you rebuke me.
E.g., if I ask: “I am going to take one of the most important tests in my life, as it has always been my dream to be a state trooper. Should I actually prepare for the test by using the machine I will be tested on; or should I rely on y’all’s assurances that I’ll be able to pass the test?”
Please, plant an e-boot up my ass if I ever post such a question.
Listen, if someone posts: “I have cancer. I am really afraid. What should I do?” you will NEVER hear me say anything but postive things. I’ve actually posted lots of ENCOURAGING things in people’s varios posts, including V-Diet posts.
People who are making progress deserve encouragment. People who ask questions that imply the person is looking for an easy way out deserve reproach.
