Subway Sandwiches has started an international food fight by using a
tray liner in its German stores which (a) promotes Morgan Spurlock?s
?Super-Size Me? crock-umentary, (b) makes fun of the Statue of Liberty, and
(c) refers to that anti-American idiot Michael Moore in flattering
terms. Interesting that Subway would bravely embark on such an
anti-American advertising campaign over in Germany (hardly a staunch, dependable
U.S. ally in recent times)…but doesn?t have the stones to do so here
on our own shores.
Anyway, our good friend Kerri Houston over at Frontiers of Freedom has
taken the gloves off and is asking for our help in letting Subway know
this kind of America-bashing marketing is unacceptable. If we want
someone to dump on America…that?s what we have France, Michael Moore and
John Kerry for! We don?t need it from an American corporation.
So hop on over to our website at www.citizenoutreach.com where you?ll
find a Houston Chronicle story on the emerging brouhaha (complete with
an angry reaction by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay), a link to an
image of the offending tray liner (along with an English translation), and
a ?call to arms? from Kerri, complete with all the necessary contact
information for Subway?s executive office.

Do I read a derogatory comment here? Tsk tsk…

Did you actually read the English translation (it is quite correct)? Where is there an anti-American remark? It says nowhere that Americans are in any form inferior, just … well, many are just overweight. And as we are at T-Nation here, we should all know that this is not so wrong. That’s one of the reasons why we train.
Quoting Michael Moore may piss you off, and that this movie got a price at the (American) Sundance Film Festival might anger you - but that is still an internal matter.
“Ami” by the way, used to be derogatory (after WW2), but in its normal usage in German is nowadays just an abreviation for “American”.
And BTW, I am sick and tired of Germany being picked on and being called a bad ally, for being unwilling to join a war effort it was a) not convinced of (like quite a few others) and b) from a legal and historical standpoint not really able to join.
So if you have a problem with an American company using its free-market mentality to win some customers in an admittedly pretty cheap way (I give you that), then deal with it - internally. But don’t make an international affair out of it - because its not.
Looks like a basic ad for a movie to me. I don’t see anything particularly unamerican about it. I do find the cartoon of the Statue of Liberty offensive, but only mildly so; I’ve seen more offensive political cartoons in the pages of nearly every newspaper.
Subway franchise owners get to do whatever the hell they want to do withint the law. most of the franchise owners are locals.
Not stomp on any toes, but if this was done in the U.S., Subway would lose their dumb clientele to McDonalds’, and Jack in the Crack’s, salads and extra value meals.
Didn’t have any feeling about the Statue of Lib cartoon. My ancestors arrived before white settlers landed in North America so I don’t have much emotion about that gift from France.
But yeah, gringos are sometimes characterized as fat. That’s too bad…and then there’s the T-Nation.
I had a roast bison wrap at Subway for lunch today, with baby spinach, tomatoes, onions and some vinagrette dressing (forget which flavor it was), it was awesome. I don’t know where all they are offering the roast bison besides here, but if you can find it give it a try.
I’m going back tomorrow, maybe they’ll donate some of the proceedes to Moore, or moveon.org.
Easy to understand how Subway would feel about McDonalds, a competitor. I don’t understand why they would have a problem with The Statue of Liberty, but maybe Jared Funhole doesn’t like it or something. And Michael Moore is probably just a really really good customer. And since when are Americans referred to as gringos? I thought that was something hispanics called whites. They call us gringos or whetos, we call them greasers or wetbacks, heck, it’s damn near impolite not to.
