Flexing Alone Without Weightlifting

So my dad injured his back lifting weights,he is 63 and has been lifting since he was 14 or 15 and like all of us he gets hurt once in awhile. So he decided that he wasnt gonna lift for acouple weeks but didnt want to lose any strength so instead he started tightening up his muscles periodically throughout the day.For example he will tighten his abs or flex his chest really hard and so on,and he says he feels tighter and harder than he has in years and he hasnt lifted for weeks.

Is this a legit type of training,i thought i read an article on here talking about this type of thing. If any of you have any info on it let me know i would like to pass it on to him. Thanks

Its not as good as actual lifting, but if he does hard flexing through the entire range of motion, thats better than nothing.

Stationary flexing aka isometrics will only maintain/build strength at a small portion of the ROM.

Look up dynamic tension.

Better than nothing… on the other hand blood pressure spikes during this form of training is something to be aware of particularly if the breath is held.

couldnt that be said for any/all heavy hard lifting if you hold your breath?- or is there a reason that you’d think it’d be moreso?

“couldnt that be said for any/all heavy hard lifting if you hold your breath?”. Yes, but all I said was that it was something to be aware of - pretty reasonable considering age and that I don’t know information about cardiovascular health and history.

You never know if someone is going to attempt a sixty
second full body isometric contraction with breath hold and valsalva. I was only speaking conservatively. Like anything else I would assume that it could be as safe or as dangerous as you make it.

How is this a Strength Sport?

Well I suppose the idea in the flexing is to maintain strength and since the topic doesn’t really fit the criteria for other sections (with the exception of the over 35 lifter), this one seemed the most logical. Just a guess though.

I concur-this belongs in the old farts section right next to my thread! It could be retitled “Charles Atlas revisited.” Doc

Do you think it could be possible to learn how to recriut more motor units by just flexing alone.
