First Deadlift Meet Ever this Weekend!

I’m competing in my first powerlifting event ever this weekend. It’s a BP and DL meet, but I’m only doing the DL. I entered the 181 lb class, RAW. My current weight is 178lbs. I’m fairly new to deadlifting, so my goal is 425lbs. I’ve only been seriously deadlifting for the last 4-5 months. I’ve done 405lbs during my training, so I’m hoping for an extra adrenaline boost at the meet.

I’m pretty stoked…and nervous. Hopefully this is the start of something new for me.

Any advice…or last words?

Don’t eat anything on meet day that you don’t normally eat. You can’t be sure how your body will react.

well zeik all i can say is make sure you get enough sleep and rest till the meet.
my first time i had pulled 405 before but made 425 at the comp.

Make sure to test your maxes the day before the meet, to see where your at. And if you can, try and get 3 hours of sleep the night before. Your body pumps extra adrenaline into your system when youve had little sleep.

And this is a MUST. Bring 3 or 4 bags of ice to the meet. When you chew it, your muscle’s numb up and you can usually get 30 or 40 pounds more out of your lifts. Chew 3 handfulls before every attempt.

Good luck at your meet man.

It’s really a shame you haven’t been asked to write an article yet.

Be prepared to wait. Depending on the number of entrants, you will be waiting several hours during the BP portion. I have had to wait as many as 5 hours before they got to the DL flight I had entered. Getting comfortable or preoccupying your self to past the time can help. Good luck

earthshaker, good stuff. thanks.

ok, so I just completed my first DL competition. It was an interesting experience. I competed in the 181 class, RAW.

My opening pull was 365 lbs. It exploded off the floor a lot easier than i expected. Almost fell backwards. Nailed it.

Second pull was 405 lbs. This was my goal going into it. Anything above this was gravy. It felt good off the floor, had a little pause at the knees, but locked it out.

Third pull attempt was 425 lbs. No go. I think fatigue caught up with me. I didn’t have the rush that I had for my second lift.

All and all it was a success. Nailed my goal. Now I have to build on it.

Up next is the Tactical Strength Challenge this weekend. I’m wondering if I should go heavier on my first lift while I’m still fresh???

here’s my 405 pull at lockout.

Grats brother, I was at that meet last week end as a spectator. Yours was a good pull! They were VERY liberal with the bench calls. I think 80% of them would have red lighted in any sanctioned meet.

I saw some of the early benches and the heavyweights at the end. I couldn’t tell how they were judging the BP. Some attempts that didn’t look good were good and visa-versa. They were pretty liberal with the hitching on the DLs also, even though they said otherwise in the rules meeting. I had a blast tho. It was a benchmark event for me. Now, it’s onward to 5 plates!

I used to know this guy. If this guy says it was a good pull take it to the bank.

HAHA Thanks Mule, I think. I have been following the over 35 gang just going through some big life changes so haven’t had time. I got engaged, Bro! Things have been moving fast in my life but good things!
