I’ve been doing Ian King style workouts and making better progress than I ever have-just interested in feedback on which finishing exercises people have been getting the best results with. So far I have used the following after my bodybuilding workouts: Farmer’s walks, Turkish get-ups, Hindu squats and pushups. I’m not really interested in converting to a complete Renegade-type workout-anyone recommend some other finishers that were particularly effective (in terms of “real-world” strength) for them?
Sprints, stair runs, boxing(heavy bag), wheelbarrow walk, car pushing, sandbag work. Ask if you need more info.
Get yourself a keg for sure. Read Chris Shugart’s ‘the lost art of the finisher’ article if you haven’t already.
Some of the finishers I like are wheelbarrow walks for time, walking with a sandbag in a bearhug position for time, and my favorite is rope pulling. For the rope you attach a fairly light weight(50 lbs. or so) and pull the weight across a football field or something. One I’d like to try is to walk with a bar held overhead for time. If you’re interested in functional training you can do the weight training portion of Coach Davies’ workouts and skip the gpp and jump rope. Good luck.
Couldn’t resist adding to all the other great suggestions (especially wheelbarrow) with 2 other personal favorites. They arent too easy to organize but if you or anyone else can, you will find them incredible. I like seated “tug-of war” weighted rope pulls and substituting heavy stones for movements such as kbell swings. If you need more clarification just ask. In faith, Coach Davies
I like doing sled dragging, walking barbell lunges, sandbag lifting, and taking a loaded barbell in a squat position and walking around with it.
Since I workout in my basement and I like to do my “finisher” right after my last standard bodybuilder exercise, I am a tad limited. I will try the wheelbarrow walk and will try some sandbag stuff after I purchase a duffelbag to fill. Besides bear-hugs and overhead presses, what other movements do you all do with sandbags?
Since you work in your basement - you can do easily do the wood chop (use tires) and truck tire flips. I do the wood chop myself in my garage - so I hope you try & enjoy it. In faith, Coach Davies
Thanks, I will try that too. I am always impressed with your willingness to help out your fellow athlete!
