Fine-Tuning the Machine & Tacking on the Vanity Plates

Powerpuff- Try the skullcrushers, you’ll like 'em.

Alexus- Yep, I’ve played around with the idea of PL. But mostly I just like to pick up heavy shit for my own gratification. So if at some point I need to use a belt to keep besting myself in the gym then I’l do it. Not there yet. That song just started a thought cascade in my brain which eventually led to the belt/gear talk. And we should both get some bands. Very versatile training equipment.

Matty, Beast- Back in the day (when gas was < $1/gallon. FUCK.) I used to drive a mini-van, black with wood trim, AKA ‘the party van.’ The ODB and SO MANY others of that era were totally on the soundtrack. We used to listen to that shit on tapes because my van was like an '82 and didn’t have a CD player. So many good times, so many blunts, so freaking cool that the back seats folded down. I admit to having tons of that music on my iPod because it takes me back too.

Kimba- Hopefully a vid soon. Most of the time I like being eye candy. As long as people don’t try to talk to me. And I sincerely hope that I motivate other women. You know, the ones who spend an hour on the stairmaster and then stop and look curiously, maybe longingly, at the free weight area as they are on their way to the mats to do abs.

Cal- Thanks. I have been working hard on my grip and it seems to being paying off. You are probably right regarding my work having something to do with it too. I have chronically tight forearms and would someday love to see what the bone density of my arms/wrists, in particular my radius, ulna, and carpals, look like.

One of the tools that I use frequently in my work is like a mini-jackhammer, so I effectively do low-level resistance training of my upper extremities all day long. My hands are strong, but I use them discerningly when it comes to manual therapy. I plan to practice in some capacity for at least another 50 years. Healthy hands can feel the love and do the work of serving others.

Oleena, Brute, Bre- I love the wax. Can’t say that I love doing it, but it is worth it. And, yes Bre, still smooth. Usually once a month is enough. Except for beach season (I live close to the Jersey shore) and then I wax as often as every 2-3 weeks depending.

Last Stand- Yet another name for those crazy pushups! I like that, “tiger eye pushups.” Sounds more hard-core than hershey kiss pushups. And thanks for the complement on the pic. I have an extensive, on-going self-portraiture project that is sort of a hobby. There is no way that I can do a TGU with 35 lbs. I tried and only made it half way up! My friend has a 20 lb KB and I think that will be doable.

lil power- I don’t have any bands (yet.) But that sounds brutal, as BG said. I will try anything once, so if I have access to/get bands I’ll try it and let you know how it goes.

Frenchie- Thanks, I loves me some back training! Just feels so good.

BG- Agreed on the idea of KB swings w/bands. Which makes me interested in trying it!

Awesome training Veg! You just remind me that I need to blow out my tri’s every once and a while. UGH!

Good stuff girlie!

Thanks Masch. You need to get that shoulder healed up first.

So, nothing to report on the training front. Took yesterday off because I knew that I needed it. It was a really physically and mentally taxing day at work. The weather was less than inspiring, drove home after 8 pm in an ice thunderstorm! Global warming is a bitch! Forced a protein drink down when I got home, did some stretching in bed and proceeded to sleep for over 11 (!) hours. Woke up refreshed and ready to go squat and DL to my heart’s content this afternoon.

Part of the energy drain is that this week is my biannual week off the girlie shit. Shifting in hormone levels so rapidly smacks me in the face for a minute. I make full use of the fact that I’m on Nuvaring. Go continuous for as long as possible. Never ceases to amaze me that my body always wins and wants a break after a while. So, I am officially in withdrawl.

Oh, those pesky, shifting hormones. God love 'em. : )

That is awesome you got 11 hours of sleep! That must have felt so good. I bet your Squat/deadlift session rocked.

Thanks Whysper! It TOTALLY rocked! I <3 sleep.

Today’s session was pretty awesome. I’m sure that the fact that I ate a bunch and slept a bunch had a lot to do with it.

Legs/lower

Warmup: 3x10 wall squats, spiderman crawls, some streching

Squat: 1x5x125, 1x5x135, 1x5x145, 1x5x165, 1x5x185, 1x5x195*, 1x3x195 , 1x2x195 (*That’s as many reps @ 195 as I’ve done since the coach overhauled my squat in January. Felt great. Tight, I had a problem with that in the past.)

Rack pulls, half-way down shin: about 15 @ 225, 245 (Didn’t count. Just groovin’ and pullin’.)

iPod is usually on shuffle and this song came up twice in a row during the rack pulls. It is in my library on two different albums, but what are the odds?

Front-loaded Bulgarians, front foot elevated on step w/3 risers: 1x8x70, 1x8x80, 1x10x80 each leg

One-arm KB swings, 35 lbs: 8x10 (4 each arm)

CG pullups: 5, 5, 3 (Just had to throw them in since I took yesterday off.)

Some of you may remember the oxygen-tank dude from a while ago. He came over to say ‘hello’ while I was doing the bulgarians. He said, “Wow, 80 lbs, that’s more than I weigh.” He might have been joking, but it could be true. He is a very small man and he obviously isn’t well. Nice guy. He was leg pressing when I finished my session, so I left my KB with him while I got my stuff out of the locker room. No way that I’m carrying that thing all over the gym if I don’t have to, but I don’t want some punk to steal it either.

Since I work in healthcare, I subscribe to a bunch of stuff just to stay up-to-date on things that effect patients and also for personal interest.

I got an email alert about this article while I was in the gym. I actually took a break for a minute to read it. It was titled: ‘Episodic’ Physical and Sexual Activity Linked to CV Risk (from heartwire which is a cardiology publication.)

What I took away from it is this:

If you want to stay alive for a long time then you better get under the bar and between the sheets (with someone else) on a regular basis because doing these things occasionally could kill you!

I often do feel like prolonged periods without sex will kill me… =D

Woohoo, the wifey did leg day with me today.
I lol’d so hard at “He could be joking, but it could be true”

I find that these things tend to go hand in hand. That is, the more I lift, the higher my sex drive!

Funny about Cyndi Lauper. I had that happen recently with Bone Thugs, think it was “1st of Tha Month.”

Nice squatting!

Squats and Bulgarians! Impressive leg day Veggie!

As for getting under the bar and between the sheets, is the article referring to people who hurt themselves doing stuff they aren’t used to? I’m now wondering what kind of gymnastics are going on under some people’s sheets. :open_mouth: Kidding. This stuff is what keeps us young, and vital, and has a HUGE effect on our happiness.

New pic w/KB, weird angle but sorta cool shot.

Nice squats. Killer volume on the rack pulls!

Agreed on the physical activity in the gym AND the bedroom. You should call your boy, “are you trying to kill me? Because I’m dying for some action!”

This is why I <3 fit girls!

i’m surprised to hear the ring works for you. do you tolerate the pill well, too?

No, I have many horror stories about the pill. Last try with them was when I was 20. I swore no more hormonal bc ever.

Circumstances led to me “trying” the ring, it has been awesome. Generally think the stuff is evil, but this one in particular has agreed with my body chemistry. Dunno why, but it has no negative side effects for me.

awesome to hear it is working well for you.

you are going to post your wall squats sometime - yes? pretty please

My wife doesent tolerate the pill well at all either very moody and her boobs kill her she was on Yaz? She just got this anchor looking thingy inserted in her box and she feels much, much better. THANK GOD! Im sorry if this was just a female only convo

Alllllllright!

Unfortunately I tend to feel most ‘ready to go’ right after a workout, but my workouts are in the morning right before work. Sad.

Veg, that is a stellar leg day! Damn girl. You’re making me jealous. Amazing numbers you’re putting up and congrats on the PR (via overhauled squat). I’m sure you mentioned, and I’m sorry that i forget, but what have you changed on the squat since getting your coach?

Love the KB pic too! Your legs are so strong and lean - complete correlation between your insanely awesome squats and rack pulls, obvi

Also, I just have to tell you that you inspired me to start up some massage therapy. Its covered through my insurance and I went yesterday for the first time. I liked it! A LOT. With the shoulder I intuitively want to put heat on it and massage it, so at least now that’s happening on a professional capacity. lol! Plus she told me I had a vertabrae out place and other tidbits, so it was good! Thanks for that!!

Your insurance covers massage therapy? fml laugh
