FGF21, Protein Restriction, The "Sugar Diet" and "Intermittent Fatting"

I can be pretty enthusiastic about them.

Especially when chanterelle season starts off with such a bang!

This tree produced an abundance of Sulpher Shelf and Maitake for as long as I’ve known of it, probably 25 years.

Every fall, like clockwork.

But time takes its toll, and nothing lasts for ever.

These will probably be the last I’ll have from it. The big oak got knocked down by a microburst a couple years ago.

Wow, that’s quite a haul! I live near the Santa Cruz mountains, so I’m sure there’s some good mushroom hunting nearby. I buy mine from Far West Fungi out of Santa Cruz.

I’m in south western PA. Your last locale was mushroom hunting Central! I’ve gone out and about up in Cambria County a bit too. Didn’t have to go too far!

I’ve been through Santa Cruz before on a ride up US 1 from Monterrey. Beautiful coastal forest through that whole region.

@antiquity @T3hPwnisher Here’s one that has remained unmatched for quite some time:

Maitake Pizza!

Part of my yet to be discovered " -N- Shrooms Diet. " . You take any given thing and add shrooms. Only proven result I’ll put my name on is that you will be full after eating.

My take on a classic- Steak. -N- Shrooms!

It might not fit your macros. You may also need a nice roll (from Celone’s or fresh baked) to swab up the juice.
But you will definitely be full.

Nice! I made the following today:
Lions Mane, Maitake, Cordyceps, and Porcini mushrooms. Chop them add, add a bit of toasted sesame oil, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, truffle salt, and crushed red paper. Air fry them. They come out really meaty and great.

That does sound really good.

I’ve never tried cordyceps. I’ve run into them quite a lot though.
Haven’t run into lions mane in quite a while either. Found a big batch one day a few years ago on some fallen beech though. Really good stuff! :face_savoring_food:

Did this tonight. Chanterelle, portobello & pepperoni.

A little something for everybody. Kid doesn’t like shrooms, wife doesn’t like chanterelle, and I don’t like leaving them in the fridge too long!

A nice cherry on top of the fatty/sugary sundae: Robert Sikes and Mark Bell had a chat together on the topic

Only the first part of the video really touches on their experiences attempting protein restriction (wherein Mark confirms he has days with no protein as part of his protocol, and Robert reiterates taking in only 9% of calories from protein) as a means to activate FGF21. Mark surmises that it’s the carbs alongside the protein restriction that are pivotal to his success, but also points out that this comes after transitioning from a carb restricted diet, similar to when he went from a carnivore approach to a traditional bodybuilding diet to compete in his bodybuilding show.

Robert reiterates the utility of this approach as a nutritional intervention, helpful for re-establishing hormonal health (like coming out of a long cut) or setting up for success in a gaining phase.

Just nice to hear a balanced and rational discussion on the subject.

On a few occasions I have eaten nothing other than 17 Krispy Kreme donuts in a day. Close to 3300 calories, 51g protein (about 6% of calories). Every time I’ve lost a couple of pounds that day.

I have to ask: what led you to settle on the number 17?

Got a box of 18 and threw one away to exercise portion control.

That’s what was left over by the rest of the family the first time I did it. So I just stuck with 17 to see if the same thing would happen again.

I haven’t been following all the details of this thread, but when I used to cycle my carbs and calories for contests, when I would have extreme high carb days where I would lower my other macros, sometimes going over my maintenance calories, the very next day, my weight would always be lower.

I always rationalized it had to do with water retention, and the resultant loss via hormonal pathways.

Luckily, because lately I’m doing the “peer over the frame of the glasses” at some things and not at others. Nothing screams 50+ like that move -lol
