Fat Grip - When and How to Use Them

Does anyone here regularly use fat grips or fat bars ? Some people say that benching with a fat bar is good for their shoulders, that it helps to bring up your forearm, and a whole lot of other stuff but on the other hand I have never seen a pro-bodybuilder use them in a video. I need some clarifications. What is the real worth of fat-grip and fat bars in term of training?

I do not have actual fat gripz however I have started making my own with 2 hand towels wrapped around on each side. I usually put them on for all of my arm day and most of my pushing movements. I have yet to work it into pulling movements due to the crappy quality

I’ve noticed quite a bit of growth in my forearms so far. Definitely a great tool in my opinion.

I personally love them…I find that my shoulders like them as well. I read on this site that the thicker grip helps activate the shoulder stablizers more although. It’s possible that some pro’s have access to thick bars in themselves.

I usually ramp up with the fat gripz and then take them off for my work sets. I’ve also used them on my work sets.

I’ve used fat gripz and now have access to fat bars. They definatly are easier on the shoulders for benching and make bicep and back movements much more challenging.

Great question. I’ve had access to a fat bar but I don’t know what to do with it. Should I do curls with it? Rows? I don’t think it’s wide enough for presses.

Try some curls and reverse curls. You could do rows too, I haven’t tried them yet.

A favorite of mine I did for a while was.
4 sets bicep curls with thick bar - ramp the weight up to a max set
1 set bicep curls with regular bar - use same weight as max set

The regular bar will feel like a toy after using the fat bar.

Fat Gripz are the best thing to happen to my training in the last 10 years. Love them. They’ve made a huge difference to my arms in 6 months. Forearms and biceps noticeably bigger and I can now do a 1 arm chin up whereas I couldnt even get close 6 months ago.

I suggest using them on almost everything for a while (except maybe deadlifts) and then use them 50-80% of the time after that. You may have to drop the weight on some movements at first but it will be worth it - trust me.

Before I used Fat Gripz i always thought grip training was just not that important for bodybuiding. Now I realize that its essential for overall arm development.
