My grip has always been a weak point for me so I’ve been doing farmer’s walks for about the past 6 weeks. The problem I’m having though is the dumbbells I’m using are only a few inches above the ground and just picking them up is killing my back. For anyone that trains at a commercial gym, is there any easy way to set farmer’s walks up?
When you pick up the weights, you can’t “dead-lift” them? That’s usually what I do.
Also, perhaps, it is time to exchange dumbbells for barbells? Again, I would dead-lift these as well, for the setup.
Do them with a trap bar if you can? probably less awkward than walking with a barbell and you can dead them like Claudan said
Maybe I was just especially stiff today but I just couldn’t get down low enough without rounding my low back. Normally I do just deadlift them though.

I’ve been wanting to try farmer’s walks with a trap bar but this is exactly what I need to stop doing.
You might try setting the dumbbells down on a bench. It doesn’t help if they are initially on the floor, but it will help if you’re pulling them off a rack and have to put them down between sets. If they’re heavy enough to justify it, you can set them on two benches and stand between the benches to pick them up.
Set the DB’s on a bench or something so when you “pick” them you do not have the bend as far.
