Deadlift @ 385 lbs 5/5/5/5/5

Inc. DB Bench Press @ 102 lb’ers 10/7 *

Weighted Chins @ 22 lbs 5/5/3.5

  • Could have easily set a new PR on Inc DB BP but for some unknown reason I did them really slowly. At normal speed I’m sure I’d have got an 11th.
Deadlifts are getting harder, but I haven’t had to really “grind” one out yet.

5 x 385lbs

For anyone confused by the weights, the bar is 1" (not olympic) and weighs only 22lbs. My first plates are 2x25kg, 2nd plates 2x20kg, 3rd plates 2x15kg, then 4x10kg and then 2x2.5kg.

I’ve been stuck at 90-95lbs, depending on the day, for DB incline. You’ve inspired me to try and get up to the 100’s.

Git, I wonder how many candidates he had to beat to get that job?

I’m pretty sure they are all dead.

man, those looked easy. I’m sure you could have done 10. Great job.

My tip is to try them straight after deads, the DB’s feel so light in your hands after a heavy deadlift, at least for the first set.

My DB bars are quite short (no room for lots of little plates) so unfortunately I have to go up in big jumps. Next week I have to jump up to 113 lb’ers. That’s gonna be a shock.

I’ll try that next week.

If not, they didn’t deserve the job.

Great DLs. No problems. You’re looking lean.

Thanks LS. Been trying a low carb diet over the last few months and have lost about 9 lbs so far. I don’t want to lose a lot just a bit of bodyfat. Still eating alot and not counting calories just cutting out bread, pasta, rice and sugary drinks etc.

nice deads Brett… good form

Thanks Bunny.

Back Squats @ 352 lbs 5-5-5-5-5 (supersetted with) GHR @ bw 5-5-5-5-5

DB Bench Press w/u 53 lb’ers 10-10

Barbell Bench Press

220 lbs x 2
264 lbs x 1
286 lbs x 1
297 lbs x 0 x 1

Really chuffed to have hit 352lbs for 5 sets of 5, which was my goal for 2010. Buzzing so much from the PR I thought I’d have a go at benching with a barbell. I can only bench with a barbell for a couple of weeks before my shoulders start hurting, so I always do all my chest work with DB’s which don’t bother them. I haven’t benched with a barbell since 2000 and it felt really weird. I couldn’t even remember how wide my grip was and because I always do inclines, It felt like I was losing the bar behind my head. Still, really pleased to have hit 297 considering my all time PR was only 308 (set in 1999).

1st set of squats 352lbs x 5

297lbs x 1

Great squats and bench. Congrats on the PR.
Have you tried close grip bench? Same shoulder issues?

Great training Brett. 325 5x5 is awesome. And the 297 bench for not benching is a bonus. I wonder about cgb bothering the shoulder as well.

Thanks LS and ECO. Haven’t tried CGBP for ages so I can’t say. I was thinking of using DB’s 99% of the time and just maxing out on the barbell BP occasionally every 2 or 3 weeks. That way if I ever want to compete at least I could get a total.

Just a thought. I know Steve, and others, use CGB because it stresses their shoulders less. I like it for the tricep targeting it does and because, even though I can’t prove it, it seems to carry over decently to my military presses.
Of course, if you are happy doing it with DBs, no need to worry about it.

Jealous of your squat and bench numbers.

You’re still edging me on the deadlifts though. My weight doesn’t start with a 4 yet!
