Yep, keep your squat style the same, just get stronger, thats what I’m trying to do.

My idea of a “proper” squat. This blows my mind!!!

Clearly plastic plates…

But seriously, when I first saw 310x2 I thought “ah, I can do that!” Then I realized they were measuring in kilos and both of my knees developed this horrible pain. Very nice lift.

Back Squats @ 341 lbs* 5/5/5/5/5 (supersetted with) GHR @ bw 5/5/5/5/5

Dips @ bw 18/12 (supersetted with) EZ Curls @ 110 lbs 6/5

  • 5 lb PR for 5x5.

Took the dips easy because my elbows were feeling a little delicate.
A year ago my 5 rep squat PR was 352 so a big milestone for me will be 352 for 5 sets of 5.

Doesn’t look like it will take you any time at all to get to 5 x 5 at 352. Those are some deep squats. Nice.

Ive decided Im going to have to change my split. Ive managed to keep up the deadlifting, front squatting and back squatting all in one week for much longer than I thought I could, but something has got to give and Id rather its my front squats than my back!! So Im going to sacrifice my front squat day so I can continue to progress on the other two. I may throw in a few sets after back squats if I have the energy. I am going to include some hill sprints on my spare day which will still work my legs whilst giving my lower back a rest. New split as follows.

Monday- Deadlift 5x5, GHR, Seated Row, Chins, EZ Curls

Tuesday- Hill Sprints

Wednesday-OFF

Thursday-Back Squats 5x5, Front Squats, Inc DB BP, Push Press, Dips

Friday-Hill Sprints

Sat and Sun-OFF

I just know that if I carry on as I am, doing all 3, Im going to end up with a back injury, (I can almost feel it coming), but with an extra lower back recovery day I can keep gaining until Christmas. I know its the sensible thing to do, so why do I still feel like Im wimping out?
Anyway starts tomorrow.

8/11/2010

Deadlifts (conventional) @ 380lbs 5/5/5/5/5

GHR @ BW 5/5/5

Seated Row @ 198lbs 7/6

Chin Ups @ BW 6/6

Ez Curls @ 110lbs 4/3

Very happy with the deadlifts. They felt easier than last weeks with 374lbs.
Big drop in reps on rows, chins and curls, because they followed the deads and I left very little rest between sets.

Did have a video of deads to upload but I’ve decided not to because my shorts look too “gay”!

Nice deadlifting.

Do you own a GHR?

Hill sprints x 10

The gravel track is in my field and is about 35yds long and fairly steep. I will measure it accurately tomorrow. Ran at about 80% intensity, recovery time was the time taken to walk down.

On a side note my deadlift numbers got an unexpected boost today when I measured my 25kg plates and discovered they are only 36cm diameter alot less than the standard 45cm. So in effect I’ve been doing deficit deads lifting from nearly 2" lower. I always thought the bar looked low on my shins!

Oh post the DL vid. We’ll ignore the gay shorts.

I like that point too. Since my left hamstring strain, I haven’t been pulling or squatting with my 50lbs plates. Originally that was because within a workout session I might need to take them off to switch to another body part move and it is therefore easier to use pairs of 25s. I suppose it might be better for rehabbing the injury to pull with a greater range of motion with plates of a smaller radius.

In fact I have seen pictures of lifting in commercial clubs of steel plates of large radius that have huge holes and sort of spokes like wheels and wonder if anyone deadlifted with them and thought they were great for it.

The diameter of the plates certainly does make a difference when deadlifting. I agree if you’re rehabbing a hamstring injury the extra depth will probably help as long as you take it gently.

I did think about putting some blocks under my plates to bring them up to “official” height, but I think I’ll carry on as I am. I do wonder what difference that 2" would make to my max though.

Great training Brett. I like the looks of your workout room. My youngest son’s name is Bretton. We call him Brett so I obviously like your name.

ATG Back Squat @ 347 lbs 5/5/5/5/5

GHR @ bw 5/5/5

Inc DB Bench Press with 102 lb’ers 10*/6

Push Press @ 165lbs 4/4

Weighted Dips @ bw + 44lbs 5/2

  • 10 reps on Inc DB BP is equal PR. Aimed for speed on the push presses, but didn’t generate much. Left little rest between sets so triceps were “fried” by the time I got to dips.

Didn’t go great tonight. Everything felt heavy, squat form was off and I couldn’t concentrate because my “gym” (a glorified shed) was being battered by 85 mph winds! Its hard to focus on your training when your’e worried about the roof being ripped off any second!

Still, completed all my scheduled reps so I suppose I should be grateful for that.

Great squatting! Good looking dips as well.
I need to rig a dip station. I just hope my shoulders can handle the load.

85 MPH winds? I always envisioned Wales as overcast, foggy and fairly still air. Damn movies!
Turning to my trusting Googlewebz, I see that it is actually mountainous (so much for moors). I guess the overcast and foggy could still be, though.

Unless, of course, you are not actually in Wales. In which case, I am an idiot…but now a more geographically educated idiot.

Thanks LS. You’re just being modest. I’ve seen your bench and military press numbers, dips will feel like nothing to you.

Wales is generally mild and very wet. We live in a smallholding half way up a mountain in the Brecon Beacons and we are very exposed. So when the weather is bad we get the full brunt of it. Here is a pic from the top of my driveway on a nice day. Today it looks a lot different.

Looks like a great place. I would have to import a few trees, mind you. But otherwise beautiful. Just the direction of that pic looks like some places here in OK, except it isn’t quite as green here. And we have the same problem with wind. There isn’t much to slow it down.

My Mom’s ex-husband (not my Dad) is from England. I’ve always wanted to visit the British Isles, but haven’t made it yet. Maybe one day…

I scrolled down only to be sadly disappointed by the clear lack of gay shorts :frowning:

By the way, how wide is your stance. From your depth, you look to be quite narrow. I’ve been playing around with high bar, narrow stance on squat accessory day and I kind of like it.

Thanks. I’ve only met one other Brett in the Uk in my life, but I understand the name is more common in the US and Australia. What’s the meaning behind Bretton?

I hate clothing snagging on the bar when deadlifting so I always wear shorts. I just wasn’t quite aware how short these ones were but when I was in the squat position there was definitely slight “buttock exposure”. I don’t want that floating around the web for eternity!

My foot spacing for the squat is how I’d position my feet for a vertical jump, so fairly narrow. I should widen my stance for a change as foot spacing really affects where you feel it in your legs. But I know I’ll never get round to it, I’m too much a creature of habit.

Nice squatting -good form.

Between you, me, and a roomful of crickets, I like your choice of music for lifting too! The contrast with the badass environment (love the rust on the plates) is awesome also.

Hill Sprints 35yds x 8

Was supposed to be 10+ but pulled my calf on the 8th. I was meant to be taking it easy, but I got carried away. I’m such an idiot. Just hoping I’ll be fine for deadlifts on Monday.

Thanks punnyguy I do try to create a “badass environment” to train in. It dawned on me the other day that I’ve had this home gym 10 years and I haven’t cleaned it once yet. It’s filthy. Still all that dust should make the weights heavier shouldn’t it? which is a good thing.

Unfortunately my musical taste is less “badass” and more 13 year old girl growing up in the 70’s. I blame my three sisters for subliminally influencing me through the bedroom wall. My dirty secret is I even like the odd Osmonds song. Thank god for the anonymity of the internet,

Since you are a proponent of the natural GHR, I thought this might be of, umm, interest.
