Fact or Myth: Some Just Weren't Meant for PL

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I guess I started thinking about this because I don’t look like a powerlifter, I find it almost insulting when I get asked how to get in shape by losing weight because I am trying everything I can do to just the opposite.

Powerlifters can look many different ways. Round, square, v shaped x shaped or pear shaped. Some are well rounded and decent at everything, some suck at one lift but compensate by being obscenely good at another. All that matters in the end is your total, and your total is pretty good for your training time and weight. I hope you realize this.

This guy doesn’t exactly look like the typical powerlifter either:

you sound like you enjoy lifting, there is no ‘right’ shape for powerlifting, a tall guy with a long torso and long arms will probably deadlift better than others, but could suck at the bench. But then you can have lifters who are just good for their genetics, lamar gant had super long arms and was unbelieveable in the deadlift but still could bench awesome.

I think some people are genetically gifted to PL but that shouldnt stop anyone of any bodytype to start or be in the sport. I was always a short guy, still am, never was muscular or very strong. I began lifting 5 years ago, began powerlifting 2 years ago and I have hit numbers I never thought possible simply through hard work and the hunger to always do more.

You are usually good/excellent at what you enjoy doing, no matter how suited you are to that past time.

I’m 5’6" and weigh 132. Last year I weighed 123 and competed squatting over 315. I’m neither young nor big boned. If you want inspiration for small boned lifters, check out the women that compete at 105lbs. They look like little dolls.

I’m not saying your a little woman. My point is that highly competitive powerlifters come in many shapes and sizes. Don’t get the mind set that your frame will limit you. Your brain will limit you much more quickly than your build.[/quote]

Very well put!
