I have a major problem. The peak on my left bicep is much bigger than the peak on my right bicep. I do mainly unilateral exercises using dumbbells, and strangely my right bicep is stronger…However my right tricep seems to lack behind my left in terms of strength. Could this be the cause of my problem?
welcome to the world of neural efficiency. i have a similar problem with my triceps. you are not alone.
-
stretch the smaller muscle. worked wonders for an earlier lat imbalance.
-
as you suggested, stick to unilateral work. only do as many reps with the strong side as you can with the weak side.
-
mind muscle. on certain bilateral movements think, “left side, left side.” staring at the side you want to work will help too.
-
don’t sweat it. small imbalances are normal.
hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice, i don’t normally do too much stretching so that’s something i’ll definately try
yeah. definitely stretch the smaller muscle. do it at home whenever you get the chance. your dominant hand becomes very adept at doing work generally speaking so stretching can cause a similar effect in your non-dominant side.
Actually when I started stretching all of my bodyparts it seems like even if I was stretching both sides equally my less developed side felt harder sto stretch, like it was tighter for some reason. So there may be something to that.
Also another thing to do is to really slow down the negatives of reps with the weak muscle group. Lower the weight and slow down the lowering keeping maximum tension on the target muscle and then make that muscle work with no help from momentum.
If you want to see that look at Shelby Starnes’s training, his arms were a weak point but he brought them up this year with that kind of rep style.
The difference is probably genetic.
