I have read (and agree) that you do not want to be all over the place with exercise selection. However, is it ok to use different exercises that target roughly the same movements? For instance on a 3 day a week routine alternating light/med/heavy days would it be ok to do, say, full squat on day, step-ups on another and then split- squats the next?
Yes, it would be fine if your primary goal were hypertrophy. If you primary goal is strength, then you would be better off doing squats all three days, or variations of squats such as box squats, 1 and 1/4’s etc.
This is assuming you are getting some hip dominant exercises in there somewhere as well. If not, you should be doing some deadlifts or variations on the other days.

Eventually the goal will be primarily strength. For now i am just trying to work out consistently and address any imbalances i have before embarking on a serious strength training routine.
Things like step-ups are great for me because i can still get a full range of motion safely (where as i still need some work for a full squat). Probably should have put this in the beginner forum, actually. Thanks.
