Embarrassing Moments In Lifting

Most embarrassing:
My second year of training was at Iron Island where there was really strong people (700+lb benchers, 900+lb squatters). One day they were benching and i was on the DL platform right behind them doing clean and press. One set, i pushed it over my head too far and i lost it behind me. It came crashing down right next to their stuff. They just looked at me and shook their heads (luckily no one was mid-set). Felt like such an ass.

Most Stupid:
A couple months ago, one of my friends doubted I could 1-arm snatch 100lb DB. I’ve done it many times in the past (with a warm-up) so said lets do it. I couldn’t find the 100lb DB so decided to just do the 110 or 115lb DB, without a warm-up. Ended up partially dislocating my shoulder and couldn’t bench/press for a few weeks.

First meet. Squats. Set my first attempt to something ridiculously low. Waited for the squat command. Got the squat command. Coming out of the hole it was WAY too easy. Bar shot off my back, made me lose balance. No lift. Fuck.

Up the weight for second attempt, still easy. Forget to wait for the squat command. Forget to wait for the rack command. Fuck.

About to bomb out of my first meet. Go for a PR attempt anyway. Every single experienced powerlifter there yelling at me to not forget the commands. Get yelled at – Wait for squat command. Get yelled at – Wait for rack command. Three whites. Not as embarrassing as it could have been.

Dropped a 400lb squat completely off my back. Happened probably 2.5 years ago, was pretty close to my max at the time. Don’t know exactly what happened, but I unracked it, and it immediately feel off my back on to the pins, bending the bar terribly in the college weightroom. Only bar i have bent and i still get blamed for every bar that is now bent from some of the teams doing o lifts

Hahaha this happened to one of my teammates at 100% RAW Worlds last year…he had just nailed a huge squat PR, and it came up so quick it surprised him…when he got out of the hole and upright, the bar kept going and flew off the back…it was rather embarrassing but he handled it well…

Worst part is, it almost happened AGAIN during my second raw meet (fourth meet overall). I like to get myself into the meet with an easy attempt, but I think it’s time to up them a bit lol.

Another one for me…
Once I had 5 plates on the bar… and somonen had greased the bar (don’t ask me why… dont you just love commercial gyms?) so the collar slipped, along with the plates. 2 came off the one end, then the bar slips the other way and all 5 fly off then the bar flies the other way and I end with a cracked mirror and 10 plates on the ground.

  1. First time squatting 3 plates. I believe at the time i got it for 3 reps. Instead of taking off a 45 from each side I took off two from one side. One 45 went catapulting across the room, the barbell flipped to the ground and the 3 plates on the other side rolled away. Luckily no one was hurt lol.

  2. While benching I was going to work up to some reps with 225. I thought my friend put two 45’s on one side but he only put one. I can’t even describe how this went but it was a catastrophe.

  3. First time I deadlifted 500lbs I drank half a bottle of gatorade before. Projectile vomited (idt it could really be considered vomit since it was only gatorade) blue gatorade all over the commercial gym mirror in front of me.

Lessons learned

Huh? How does the bar flip with 1/3 plates per side. I have experimented with this shit:
0/2 is fine, but iffy
1/4 is fine, 1/5 is ok on a wide rack with the bar pushed to the side fully
2/6 is fine, never tried with more than that because it could end especially bad hahahah

Anyways, I think most anyone has flipped a bar once in their life by the time they are moving 4+ plates. Hopefully only once cause otherwise you are stupid. hahahah

Haha idk man. Maybe it has something to do with the shitty bent bars my gym has. I wouldnt dare try to take 2 off at once since that incident, even if it happened more than a year ago. Got pretty close to taking that bar/plate to the chin.

Wtf man 1/5 and 2/6???

Place I go can take a 3 plate differential but not a 4 plate difference. Must be the rack.

My first powerlifting meet of my life last year, squatted 420, last attempt was 425. Well they loaded 500 by accident somehow, and needless to say it didnt go too well. Im actually lucky I didnt get hurt, just racked it remember thinkin 435 is pretty damn heavy, then went ATG real quick. Just stayed there for like a second chillin until the spotters got it off me. I swear they looked at me like I just got shot or somethin, but nothing was injured at all thankfully

Ahh… I regularly take 2 plates off per side, it goes so much faster. How did you manage to flip that shit?

1/5 is definitely sketchy hahaha. 2/6 is ok. With each plate you add, the difference between sides can be more. (IE 0/3 will fall every time, but 9/14 is probably fine) Anyways…

Another embarassing moment:
My GF was lifting off for me and as a cue I said ‘tight’ quite loudly. Let’s just say people didn’t think I was talking about my bench setup…

This was from a while ago. Got a little excited and unracked a little quickly. Had a box behind me so I was afraid to step back and risk tripping over the box. Thank god for spotters hahaha.

Was challenged by one of the curl-bros in my school to do as many reps as I could with 30kgs on the EZ bar. I got too pumped up and ended up flinging the first rep straight into my teeth. The shame…

In high school, tried to do leg raises on an incline bench(ya know, cuz it’s tougher…) while holding on to the bar. Needless to say, I essentially pulled the bar into my face. Had a bit of a skid mark cut down my cheek.
