Effects of Aspartame

I was wondering if anybody can give some advice (anecdotes or research) on the negative effects of aspartame. I am trying to lean up, and I drink waaaaaay too many Diet Cokes. Like probably 8-10 glasses/cans a day. I heard that it actually make you crave carbs and stimulates your appetite!

why…would you drink that much diet coke?

I watched a documentary the other day that talked about it causing brain damage as well as the things you have mentioned, never looked at the studies they based these claims off of though.

I can drink a 2 litre bottle of diet coke or pepsi max no problem and i do quite frequently.

Water tastes like shit so why wouldn’t you…

This is a good article regarding the dangers of aspartame:

But i still am quite sure it is better than drinking regular soda’s.

Never pin pointed it, but when I cut out gum and other aspartame products, I would always get painful bisters on my tongue when I added it back in

WaylanderXX (no longer here) had suffered some terrible stomach issue I believe, while prepping for a contest. He was drinking a TON of diet soda every day.

Don’t be a pussy. Drink water. If it tastes like shit to you, then stop drinking out of the toilet.

lol

Many many years ago I was a 1.5L bottle a day diet coke head. I used to get bad headaches during/after strenuous exercise like full court basketball and such. Never really made the connection until years later. Cut out the coke, headaches disappeared. Coincidence vs Causality? I dunno. Started eating healthy in general and cut soy out as well…

The physique world seems to be big on sucralose but I wonder what that sweetener has in store for us after years of exposure??

“Coincidence vs Causality? I dunno.”

Dunno? You can always ‘know’ if you start on the Cokes again and headaches return.
If don’t wanna take that chance again, then don’t kid yourself…you knew.

It’s not like we are guzzling down the high fructose corn syrup laden, insulin spiking, fat storing regular soda’s. Diet coke will not effect your body composition negatively so just enjoy it in moderation.

I’d cut out all diet coke for a while and switch to something like green tea.

Moderation … Or Crystal Light.

If this dude doesn’t mind drinking some sugar-free beverages i’m pretty damn sure i don’t either.

3 gallons per day huh…

I get a stuffy feeling in my head when I drink aspartame drinks. I dont get it from sucralose, which is a sweetner too.

Though, I dont drink much sugarfree drinks in general.

aspartame has been reviewed by the FDA TWICE, both times found to be perfectly safe for human consumption. If im not mistaken, the MAXIMUM allowed amount of aspartame in a drink such as diet coke is 1% of the amount they were using to test on rats that resulted in cancer or other adverse affects.

You shouldnt be drinking liters and liters of diet soda and shit anyway, but if you’re like me and have a coke zero or 2 a day while dieting, youll be fine.

How about this recent article by Dr. Mercola:

He says he would rather drink a regular soda than a diet soda??

“Choosing diet foods will help you lose weight: Substances like Splenda and aspartame may have zero calories, but your body isn’t fooled. When it gets a “sweet” taste, it expects calories to follow, and when this doesn’t occur it leads to distortions in your biochemistry that may actually lead to weight gain”

Ha Ha…good one! I don’t get people who say they don’t like the taste of water. It’s like saying you don’t like to breathe.

It’s people who have been fed soda and juice their whole life

I have to think this guy is overblowing everything. Hes clearly got an agenda here. Ive known too many guys on this site and in my daily life that have dieted down while consuming way more diet soda than i do with phenomenal success. Shit, Waylander was drinking like 1.5 to 2 liters a day and had incredible success. And i understand what hes saying about counting calories, but hes being way too broad. The bottom line is, as many people here can attest to, counting calories DOES work and is often the most efficient way to monitor/adjust progress.

If you are counting calories, putting in the work in the gym, and having a couple drinks a day with artificial sweeteners, you’re waist isnt going to get bigger from any fat gain.

Like i said before, i wouldnt condone drinking as much diet soda as someone like Waylander did, but a couple drinks a day to help you better enjoy your bland diet food wont hurt.

I would have to agree it seems as though Dr Mercola does overblow a lot of topics.

Perhaps, but I’ve found him to be right on par with many things we BBers seem to need to defend when arguing diet with the general poopulation.

For example, creatine gets a bad rap to the average non-gym goer. Dr Mercola has praised creatine for particular health issues.

I think the whole “creatine gets a bad rap” thing is pretty out-dated. I cant remember the last time i mentioned my creatine consumption to a non-lifter and even received a raised eyebrow.

Ive no doubt that drinking copious amounts of artificially sweetened beverages isnt exactly good for you, but via my own experience and the anecdotal experience of others, i would think you have to drink a pretty ridiculous amount of artificial sweetener to suffer from even mild adverse health effects.

I do remember Way’s issues that forced him to forfeit his competition prep, but i dont think he ever came back and told us specifically what the cause of the issue was. I know he also said there was a correlation with decreased food consumption and increased stomach pain. Also, the carbonation itself can cause issues for people, especially when drinking as much as Way was. I personally know a couple people who cant drink anything carbonated without feeling pretty miserable. Cant remember what the medical condition is though.

I just cant believe that 0 calorie soda can actually be worse for a person than regular soda. Im sure more people have suffered decreased health from regular soda than diet.
