You’re missing the big picture here, that was explained to you in the other thread already. Just because Max Charles uses the same terms you would (such as “deadlift”), that does not mean he is referring to the same exercise you are due to any number of reasons… but the chief one among them being, you don’t use POWERLIFTING STANDARDS to judge the claims of BODYBUILDERS. In bodybuilding, your actual visual results matter above all else.

What he calls a deadlift is highly unlikely to be what you would call a deadlift… that does not make someone a liar. There are no “rules” in bodybuilding, everything is completely contingent on the individual. Bodybuilding is not the confused flamboyant son of Powerlifting… They are two totally different things.

When Ronnie Coleman says he squats 800lbs or bench 600lbs, you don’t go and check to see if he’s hitting parallel or pausing at the chest, because that doesn’t matter since he squats specifically to build up his thighs and benches for his pecs - and we’re talking about a former powerlifter in this case.

You don’t judge bodybuilders by the standards of powerlifters. That’s just foolish.
I shot a big hairy guy right in his fur covered back. I swear he looked like a bear and I was using a hunting rifle. It doesnt count as murder because I was hunting. Ignorance is bliss.
now you are going to have me looking over my shoulder. i need to stay out of the woods.
Just dont run around the woods naked and I think everyone’s safe lol. That’s good advice right there, I think
sometimes you just gotta run free though. that’s how i roll.

Why give names to specific lifts at all then. If you can just call something by a name when it’s clearly not that thing what’s the use of even having different names for lifts.

Deadlifts are done from the floor. If your not pulling from the floor youre not deadlifting. End of story. Rationalizing another man’s ignorance is a joke.
I didn’t see the video where he claimed the deadlift, only the first one where he talked about the 350lbs preacher curl and his eating habits. Based on that video though, it was obvious that there was a bit of a language barrier, and that he didn’t understand some of the questions completely. At first I thought pretty much the same as a lot of other people, that “this dude is a fucking liar,” but now I think it may be more an issue of a language barrier, being bad at interviews, and never really thinking that seriously about this shit before.

Not everyone is constantly researching this shit on the internet, to know all the different terms and lingo used. Although the average T-Nation reader probably knows there is a huge difference between an overhead press, and a jerk, there are plenty of people who would see both and just think “wow this guy put 100lbs more over his head than the other guy.”

He’s a a complete rookie in competing and being interviewed, English is obviously not his first language, and he probably doesn’t give too much of a shit about researching training and making sure he’s using correct terminology, cut him a little slack.

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you ONLY apply that sort of mindset to something as trivial as bodybuilding. But I will not cut someone slack for “not knowing any better”. Just dont speak if you dont know any better, OR expect to be corrected. It’s not a big deal for everyone to say “No, he shouldnt have said deadlift when he wasnt actually talking about doing deadlifts, he’s still strong as fuck though”.

No one is correcting him. They are just talking shit and calling him a liar. I didn’t even know what a rack pull is until I looked it up yesterday. I bet most of the people I train with don’t know it either…BECAUSE THEY AREN’T POWERLIFTERS. I do know they are bigger than most of the people here though…which is what counts.

??

I HEARD THE TERM a year ago but didn’t look it up on youtube until yesterday.

I even write just that in the other post.

I mean, damn, if you are that ridiculous that you call that lying then you lose credibility here.

If someone comes up to you and says “hey great chest how much do you bench?” and you say “315 for reps.”, yet neglect to mention that you do not pause the bar on the chest then pause at complete lockout with your butt and heels flat, according to some of you idiots you are now a LIAR.

When Dorian Yates says he does deadlifts, he means he picks the bar up, lowers it until it’s just past his knees, then stands up again. So ZOMG he’s clearly a dirty LIAR who just wants ATTENTION claiming that he does heavy deadlifts, when in reality he does them modified to fit his bodybuilding needs since he isn’t a POWERLIFTER (you know, those guys that have decided they own the entire world of weightlifting and will give a name and number to everything in it, belittling everyone who doesn’t agree with them).

This is like a bunch of football fans going up to a baseball player and asking how far he can throw a ball, and he says “oh about 100 yards”, and then everyone loses their minds because Bret Favre can only throw a football 80 yards so this guy is clearly a dirty stinking LIAR… except he naturally thought you meant throwing a baseball, BECAUSE HE DOESN’T PLAY MOTHERFUCKING FOOTBALL.

I’m pretty sure Favre can’t throw the ball 80 yards…

315 for reps is a lot different than 700 for reps. One requires proof because it has never been seen, there other is normal so who cares. I don’t see why you can’t understand that.

Was just about to type this, it’s more so about the weight used than actual lift. 350 preachers, come on, man who the fuck even does a 350 cheat curl let alone using that weight on preachers…dumb ass this guy.

Anomalies occur in nature. This is a constant. Give it whatever term you see fit (mutant, freak, etc).
Max Charles is one of them. It seems that almost nothing about this guy is normal. Under this context, why would anyone question his lifts?

Let’s just move on and admire the very traits that inspire us in this game.

If that were the case he would have no problem doing those lifts on camera and making some easy money.

Your statement (aside from the money part) reminds me of a thread I posted a long time ago. In it, a very thin kid was doing DB bench presses with 100lb dumbbells with apparent ease. I recall that Prof X called “fake”. I’m not trying to stir shit up, but the good Doc didn’t believe a vid of this feat, yet he believes Max Charles’ statements without video backup.

Just saying.

Okay, maybe I AM stirring shit up.

lol

The big difference? That kid weighed all of maybe 160lbs and had pipe cleaners for arms.

That really needed to be pointed out?

As a 125 lb teen (with 13.5 inch arms) I easily bench pressed (3 white lights) 250 lbs. Anyone who didn’t know me at that time would never have believed it unless they saw it.

My point is (and I’m backing Max Charles here as well) if we don’t have all the info on someone, we obviously fall somewhere between doubt, and believing.
I believe Charles based on his own words and his freakiness.
I believed that kid in the video (although at first I was skeptical) because I can SEE him doing it.

Dude, I am also between doubt and believing. I’ll believe it when I see it. The difference is, I am not going to start screaming “liar!!!” and act like his words overshadow his physique when his body is what he is here to be judged on.

One thing I can tell about Max is that he has no concept of how the “general public” will view his words. He is speaking normally like he would to anyone…not realizing that the world is filled with jackasses who are just waiting for you to say something off so they can leap forward and tear you down.

We like to call these people “haters”…guys who haven’t achieved shit in a particular area that would make them stand out at all but are quick to tear down some guy who does stand out in that area.

I would like to see what this guy can do on stage with proper training.

I would also like it if Polumbo didn’t keep pushing for him to make a statement about the weight he uses.

Charles didn’t leap forward and make these claims. In fact, he originally stated in that vid that he didn’t want to say until Polumbo kept pressing.

People love to tear people down when they stand out. It seems to be human nature for average people.

Good post.

My only hope is that Max Charles continues forging ahead and doesn’t get worn down by the haters, wanna-bes, and all the internet squabbles that mean nothing in the real world. I want to see this guy hit his full potential. I think most of us here would like to see that as well.

I don’t think most here want to see that at all…or else his lift numbers wouldn’t be THE main topic of two different long ass threads now.

Mind you, most of the people who leap forward to bitch about this are guys you NEVER see in other threads speaking positively about ANY of these guys.

That is why guys like Whitefalse get called haterz. When was the last time you saw him in this forum EVER typing anything positive about ANY bodybuilder?

But he and those like him will be here for pages to talk shit.

I seriously doubt Max thought his words would have this effect. On more than one website, not one person is talking about his build.

That is not the action of someone who wants to see someone else reach their potential at all.

i personally want to see Andy Bolton pull 1000lbs and then have Max Pain (Charles…sorry) come right up behind him and pull that shit for reps…then pick it up, put it on a preacher curl and rep that shit too.

There are scores of BB’ers better than Max Charles, there is no one in the world who has ever deadlifted that much weight.

Are you really bitching about this? What did you think would get talked about?
