The bad thing is some people really think like that. It’s a weird world when someone who weighs over 300lbs lean at 6 feet tall is actually seen as too weak to ever bench 500lbs for reps.
In fact, are there even guys at around that height and that weight who CAN’T bench 500lbs or damn close to it?
[/quote]
That’s what I was thinking and tried to say in my post. If I weigh 125… and can bench 200 for 5 or so… (no impressive feet, I know. not my point)… but what makes somebody think somebody who weighs 300+ in the off season COULDN’T benchpress 500lbs or close to it? Especially when they are CLEARLY advanced and WAY ahead of MOST people.
Let’s say I weighed 315. That’d be 252% more than I weigh right now. If my benchpress was proportionally 252% bigger… that would be 504 for 5. (I used a percent calculator… lol… if the numbers are wrong… well… sorry)
Not that my numbers mean anything (I’m still new to this game)… or that strength works that way… but just food for thought.
It makes no sense to think somebody of that level and musculature and overall bodyweight COULDN’T benchpress 500.

Whats the deal with this Shugart guy, read some of his stuff he positively HATES bodybuilders, which is just a little weird.
I don’t necessarily think he hates bodybuilders, but he seems to be in a direction of more mainstream fitness and lifting (staying lean and gaining some mass but not trying to get up to 250 anytime soon).
Oh maybe i mis understood his intentions then, just seemed like he has some passion against getting big.
He does. It shines very clearly to anyone paying attention to it.

What’s with most of the authors on this site not looking like they lift seriously? I thought Shugart was big since he’s like ‘oh, I’m 40 or whatever and look like I’m 25,’ and goes to BB conventions, but he changed his avatar, and he’s not impressive at all.

Which shouldn’t be so surprising. Some people let their fear of getting fat get out of control which impedes progress. It’s somewhat of a common theme around here… Which leads to the chicken and egg argument.

Maybe it’s not his goal to get HUGE. It’s ok not to want to get really big.

Well why the fuck are they hired as authors on a bodybuilding site? The articles are cool to read if you’re doing rehab or something, but not for building size. I’d rather just read X’s posts than their articles. I’m pretty sure Shugart is Tucker Max’s cousin.

Whether or not I agree with him, Shugart is a good writer. Also, he writes to target audience, people who just want to be in shape. Of course you could argue that that’s not what T-Nation is about.

Use the right TOOL for the job. The guy has access, and has worked with more members of the fitness industry then most here. Just because he doesn’t look like some of those people doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what to do or how to do it.
He may not have that desire, and he is here for people who want to be fitness oriented as well as small frame 100% natural guys. There are other authors who look like they lift Scott Abel is bigger than most here, CT has a fair amount of size, and Ian King is pretty impressive.
The Dave Tate project had him looking like more of a pro bodybuilder than alot here also. Chris happens to be pretty good at nutrition, cardio and motivation. He’s a tool use him for that.

Exactly, he’s useful for the people who want to look/train like him. It’s like diet books targeted to middle aged women (my mom has a lot of them) they’re useful for middle aged women. Not for anyone else.
I know I’m bumping an older thread. I found some interviews on this guy that are interesting. part 1 he says he trains 6 days a week and eats whenever hes hungry which is probably a massive amount.
I take it this guy doesn’t sweat miniscule shit (macros and if his pinky should be pointing up when curling) and looks at the big picture. Getting stronger, bigger and staying consistent with it over a long period is what I see and get when listening to him.
I’m about his height. Puts shit into perspective on how much mass it takes to fill an above average height.
Seems like a cool down to earth guy, who’d probably laugh at most of the stuff being said in this thread.
They will probably clean this up soon, but this is his current Wikipedia page.
Dave Palumbo (born David Christopher Palumbo February 17, 1968 in Manhattan, U.S.) is an American bodybuilder. He lived in Queens until he was 4 years old at which time his family moved to East Meadow, New York. He grew up in the suburban town of East Meadow in Nassau County. He competed in his first Bodybuilding competition in 1990, an NPC natural competition (hahahahaha) in New York City where he placed 6th place weighing in at 168lbs.
He continues to compete with his highest placing being that of 2nd place in 2003 in the ‘Super Heavyweight’ class at the NPC USA competition in Las Vegas, Nevada. He weighed 262lbs.
Dave is the former editor-in-chief of MuscularDevelopment.com and owner of SPECIES NUTRITION
Dave is no longer competing and is now focused living a healthy lifestyle, helping his clients and working for Muscular Development.
Dave is the creator of the Palumbo diet, which emphasizes High fats, low carbohydrates, high protein.
Dave spent some time in prison for selling fake drugs to his friends and numerous others. Known as the ugliest bodybuilder in the world, Dave loves the fact that his body looks like shit. Dave also is seeing a She-Male named Gary Collette Nelson. They are known as “The Ugliest Couple in Bodybuilding”.
It is well known that Dave Palumbo and fellow bodybuilder Bob Cicherillo have an ongoing rivalry, and have had several heated confrontations in the past.
Some say the reason for this is Bob Cicherillo being known as the public face of bodybuilding because of his congenial demeanor and Dave Palumbo disputes this title given to Bob, as he feels he himself is bodybuilding’s public faced.
Dave was recently fired by a 120-lb “guy” with a high-pitched lispy voice.

I agree, unlike alot here I don’t hate the guy for not wanting to look like a pro bodybuilder. In case you guys did’nt notice, alot of people do not want to look like a pro bodybuilder, but that does’nt mean you should dislike them or ignore everything they have to offer.
He knows his stuff when it comes to nutrition and losing weight, who cares if he does not share my goals of looking like nubret, zane or any of the other aesthetic bodybuilders.
No difference at all. You don’t seem to be noticing that this guy is actually bigger than many pro bodybuilders who have been at it for a decade…and he has never competed before.
This is what struck me as the most impressive part of the interview.
The guy competed, trained, and dieted all on his own, and WON.
What happened to people just realizing that in order to be that BIG you have to move BIG weights, that you don’t get that big or that strong without adding more and more weight to the bar?
Maybe I’m just adding fuel to the fire, but if people would concentrate on THEIR OWN endeavors and not get hung up on someone else’s maybe, just maybe, they would achieve something just as note worthy.

Exactly!
Arnold was once asked for advice. He told the guy to eat salt and lots of it at every meal. Later the guy said it wasn’t working and Arnold told him that he needed more salt.
Did anyone concentrate on Arnold playing a joke? Nope, they saw his huge chest and biceps. They saw his work ethic. If that guy in the gym wanted advice, all he had to do was open his eyes.
If you want to know the truth…the guys who got hurt about being “lied to” are missing the joke, cause it is on them. Open your eyes!
I’m convinced that it is more prevalent in elite athletes and bodybuilders than previously thought.

I thought that there has only one known individual born with this mutation?
I remember they were interested in doing human testing with the new “Myostatin blocker” injections, but opted against it because a child in Germany has that gene mutation and they could just examine him.
