Yeah man. Im like still in fucking shock. Like to me those weights are insane. There was a chick there competing who is also a powerlifter (kat becker) who squats 240kg. It was just nice to be in a similar crowd and meeting people that are serious about lifting, unlike the stupid gym bros at my gym. I’ve never met people like that before. I want to be as strong as them one day. The overall winner of the WA strongest man and woman over 105kg category was max mCcall. Who is 23 years old and man hes a beast. He got the 400kilo car carry 15 metres in 11 seconds. The other competitior was matt lynch who got the 140kg log and 300kg axle deadlift ×5
Haha that’s why I Joined TNation actually, I find people like that appreciate the effort being put in (more-so than the absolute number on the bar).
I was talking to everyone there and i said should i compete next year, ( a few even asked if i was competing that day lol) i got nothing but encouragement. Even though id probably come last my goal is to just not zero the events. I know i can do it though. Honestly i feel so luch better mentally now that i have things to strive towards, iv always been like " i wanna lift this amount of weight or get this amount of gains etc’ but just training for no true purpose i think sets you back, now that i have to get so much stronger and fitter. Im motivated even more.
Also im with you on that one. i love tnation also, just a bunch of great people. I originally joined because on facebook i messaged the page and asked how do i beat up someone who hit my girlfriend. They said to ask the forum lol. And well iv been around ever since haha!
I meant to say that pressing with leg drive IS vital!
Damn correctur -.-
Well it did say ist so I thought you meant isnt lol. I was kind of confused haha. I didnt think that sounded right…
Yeah my German auto correctur always tries to convert similiar words to German (is = ist in German). That is why I always have a lot of mistakes in my texts when I type on my phone. It is super frustrating.
In Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne… also the coast between Cairns and Brisbane/ Adelaide and Melbourne.
She ist also planing tours to the Whitsundays and Fraser Island. She ist unsure If the kangaroo Islands are worth it.
Why no western australia ![]()
I wouldn’t know ![]()
I just translated what she wrote to me. I think she is doing an English class in Cairns or one of the first cities for a week and then she wanted to travel a bit.
Curious; what is the difference between press with leg drive and push press?
I wouldn’t spend much time with the barbell clean. You will rarely be able to utilize that technique with implements. Look at how people continental an axle or clean a log or keg; very different stuff. THAT technique is worth learning.
I would learn the jerk now while you are young. Super valuable for pressing.
Get good with using leg drive & getting weight over your head. Push press/jerk is probably going to be your go-to. BB cleans are fun and do carryover a little bit, but as the other guys sais for the most part you will be a lot better off learning to clean the implements since there is a lot of difference.
Explain what you mean by a push press and a press with leg drive. Probably a clean and/or power clean and push press with proper form though.
I know people will probably say cleans don’t transfer to a log clean, course they won’t, they are two very, very different muscle patterns. However cleans may transfer to axle cleans tremendously if you axle clean like Thorbjorson, and they actually make you more explosive/coordinated. You might not be able to muscle clean axles if you aren’t an Icelandic giant though, people like to continental because it’s hard as fuck to clean a non-spinning, thick piece of metal that you can’t hook grip or even hold on double overhand very well.
You are also still young and have a good opportunity to build power and coordination (these are harder to develop later in life), and you are still reasonably strengthed so that you don’t have to fight to not muscle the weights to learn how to clean.
Learn how to push press and jerk properly too. Leg drive has tremendous value, and the guy who has strong legs and stable shoulders who knows how to dip and drive properly will beat the tricep/shoulder monsters who don’t know how to use leg drive every time on the barbell (and possibly on the log).
Turn off the audio for the shitty music, but here’s an example of what leg drive does. I think the lad is a 69 or 62 for context, he’s not an international level lifter as far as I am aware. Handles a 100kg log clean and press like butter, think he hits 110kg off camera and misses 115kg (I assume because he can’t clean it). Hits a 130kg push press with ease
As I often say @Koestrizer ducking auto-correct!
There’s a ton to see, so it’s hard to say what’s unmissable and what isn’t. I’d definitely argue for spending more time in Melbourne than Sydney, simply because Melbourne is way nicer in every aspect. Heading out to Alice Springs probably wouldn’t be a bad idea, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Gotta be careful about drop bear, nasty cunts. You have to walk around residential areas holding a screwdriver above your head, native Australians don’t have this problem because they’ve already developed a protective, microscopic layer of vegemite from living in Australia so long.
Push pressing is probably the best foundation builder for overhead pressing in Strongman. Jerking is very technical, but still requires a lot of power from the leg drive and the upper back/shoulder strength to stabilize the weight overhead…which push pressing does a great job of building. I’d even place the push press higher in priority than strict pressing because most Strongman/Strongewoman competitors use leg drive on their overhead events.
As far as the push press vs the clean and push press, I think I’m going to echo what most have already said. The barbell clean is a great lift for overall power and explosiveness, but it doesn’t really transfer well to cleaning a log or continentaling an axle. If you want to work on triple extension and exploding from the hips, barbell cleans are definitely a good movement to train. I hope this helps a little.
Ì meant how clean and press you clean the weight then push press it. I wasnt sure whether or not clean and press could also mean clean and strict press So i made sure to say leg drive. Sorry for the mix up.
At the strongman comp on Saturday i noticed that the people with the biggest log press, didnt do a jerk, wouldnt they be able to log more with the jerk?
I saw some people doing the jerk and it looks pretty technical so it will take a while to learn.
Thanks for the help man, iv always done strict press so yeah, i dont have much experience using leg drive for pressing.
Yeah thats what i mean soz.
Thanks for all that! Also does push press build strict press? Im thinking maybe but i dont know.
In most people, yes. The push press overloads the shoulders. In a mass block it can be a good idea to do slow Eccentric (lowering) after push pressing the weight up.
Thanks mate, il see how it goes. I need to add about 30kg to my strict press within the next year lol. Id say right now i could max out at 60kg but im still counting 50 as my max. I also need to add alot to my push press. After this week when i hit 40×10 strict il be moving to 50kg and il be able to get reps of my previous max in a set. From there il be adding a rep a week and yeah.
Well you know the drill, build your strength don’t test it. I’m really liking your goals at the moment and your attitude of putting your head down and getting after what you want. Keep enjoying this journey and you will get rewards before too long buddy.
If you do it correctly, then probably.
I need to severely limit the amount of leg drive I put in order to make the push-press an actual push-press. Otherwise it’s a glorified push-jerk where my upper body does little in actually getting the weight up.
In any case, all the strongman competitors with logs here have very strong strict press numbers and train it on a regular basis. I would think it makes sense to do the same.
