Dropping OHP Completely?

Cheers guys, I may try some push press or bench twice a week, I will most likely revisit ohp at some point down the line, just wasting my time on it right now!

If you don’t care about it, why are you even asking us ā€˜if it’s possible’ to not do it? You can do whatever the fuck you want, man. Lifting isn’t about anyone but you. You could do handstand pushups for all anyone else cares. You started this thread dedicated to the idea that you will not do OHP anymore. So it’s not a genuine question.

Well the question was can i swap it for push press or another bench

Which ever you prefer. Although for shoulder health, I recommend incorporating some type of dumbbell overhead press and/or push-ups for assistance.

Yea just drop OHP. Most of the people here just want to follow the program exactly how it is and only accept variations that Wendler posts from time to time. But this is a template not a program. And what works for you may not work for someone else. I made a similar thread a few months back. They all said dont drop OHP and Wendler himself gave a childish answer. But I tried it out anyway and the results were perfect for me. I added a 2nd bench day and my bench improved a lot. Im pretty sure my OHP is improved now as well even though I havent done it in months. If you have some idea that you think is good dont let people here tell you its not. I speak from experience. Good luck

My cousin. Go follow some instructions on how to live your life now.

Doing just that got me bigger and stronger than the 3 of you combined

Not caring what people think and asking for opinions on an internet message board seem contradictory.

It typically boils down to not caring about what other people think unless they can validate you.

IMO, you need to be aggressive with the OHP. I consider the OHP to be an upper body deadlift. Think about it - you hold the weight motionless and then press it upward. Is that not similar to the deadlift? When warming up try to THROW the weight up. You need to treat this aggressively as the deadlift. The reason why most people advocate for the OHP is that there seems to be a direct correlation to the bench press. When the press gets stronger, so will the bench. If you feel you’re not getting enough bench work you could always throw in a light day or close grips after the pressing.

Finally, ever seen a big bencher without a big press??

and my answer is the thing I just said, do whatever you want. It’s your life. You can literally swap it for anything. You could swap it for wind sprints and cone drills if you WANT to. Or you can drop it.

if you cant do something…you must…yes you must overhead press

If your OHP sucks then what makes you think push pressing will go well for you?

well actually, from a performance standpoint, there can be a world of difference from person to person as to how much the ā€˜push’ part helps. I get 10-30 lbs out of using leg drive, depending on the implement I’m pressing. I know some people who get more like 80+ lbs extra out of push pressing.

Of course you can do more weight, but you still need to be a good presser. If you’re stalled on press you’re going to stall on push-press, just at a higher weight. So really, you’re just giving yourself a temporary ego boost because you can do 30 extra pounds.

I strongly disagree. There are plenty of strongmen competitors who almost never practice strict pressing. A lot do, but enough don’t for me to be convinced it’s not necessary for everyone. I almost never strict press anymore, and my numbers are continually going up.

Press (when done correctly) not only strengthens whole upper body and mid section, it also keeps shoulders healthy and prevents rotator cuff problems. It does it better than some silly belief in 1:2 push/pull ratio…
