Drinking on Weekends

I workout hard during the week. Lift hard and do cardio 4 days a week. I do just cardio the other 3 days.

On the weekends though, I drink pretty hard at least one night, about 12+ beers or 3/4 of a fifth. Sometimes Friday and Sat Night.

How much does that affect things? I know obviously it is bad for you, i’m not wondering that. I’m just curious as to how it effects muscle building and things like that.

I’m not a bit fat except for a little belly, Im 5’10" 210 lbs, bench 355 deadlift about 450. I haven’t done squats in a while cause of my knees.

You know the answer to your question. You just want people to justify your behavior.

Grow up.

I’m an inch taller, don’t have much fat on my belly and am pretty on par with the rest of your posted stats.

I booze on the weekends too. I’m sure it isn’t beneficial, but so far it doesn’t seem to be all that detrimental either. Maybe i’d be slightly stronger or slightly more “cut” if i didn’t binge, but i doubt by much.

On sundays, I drink lots of water, take a multi for sure and drink green tea to flush stuff out of my body.

By monday morning, the start of a new lifting week, I am re-hydrated, rested and ready to go again.

I’d take 1 training session of a possible sacrifice in gains for a fun weekend as long as I am growing consistently.

If I were trying to lose belly fat however, I’d probably take it easy on the booze until i had it under control.

As I get older, I’m sure I’ll have to adjust with the changes in my body chemistry.

Depends on your goals. If you want to reach elite levels in strength sports or BBing, you have to sacrifice your vices.

how much does it affect things, lots. you are drinking over half a case of beer, the only excuse is you are in university/college.

otherwise you have a choice to make, between your goals and your friends/lifestyle, because trust me you won’t be able to stand them when you are sober.

and you are fat, just everyone else for the most part is fatter. so do you want to compare yourself to the morbidly obese and borderline alcoholics, or actually achieve what you want in life.

of course this is easy to say as i now get wasted off 3 or 4 drinks since i left drinking behind at university. so i try to limit myself to 2 and follow the 10% rule.

I’d have to disagree. Granted I personally am still in college, I do drink pretty heavily on the weekends like the OP.

I’m really not fat at all. A few nights of boozing per week won’t hurt any more than a few cheat days. If they do, you just have to work a little harder. 15 more minutes on your cardio sessions ought to do the trick.

Calories are Calories when you get down to it.

Now if only there was proof that alcohol killed brain cells . . .

Drinking like that seriously impairs your performance. I took 4 months off drinking, I have between, class working at McDonald’s and stress of being broke, I have never made better gains.

Take a break and come back slow, getting drunk on 4 beers is healthier then getting drunk on 12.

Ok and…

are you implying you drink too much and can’t finish a thought?

You shore do have a purdy mouth.

I used to “weekend binge” too, and it used to cost me. I by and large rarely binge drink (once a month now usually) and have made alot better gains for my abs. I don’t have the “300” abs of course, but I’m getting there and am alot better now that I stopped the weekend binge.

I found that drinking on weekends screwed with my eating. Other than that drinking a liter or two of water before going to makes everything fine the next day.

But remember, every minute your liver spends breaking down ethanol is a minute it is not doing something anabolic. Then again, if you are not streaking drunk, whats the point in looking good naked?

To be honest depending on the amount of cardio you are talking about (10 min or 50?) your lack of recovery does more harm then the alcohol.(in terms of bodybuilding)

CaliforniaLaw had a better answer for the real question.

The most important part about bingedrinking is the next day some people don’t lift as intensely. Keep up the intensity and you won’t have to worry as much. I have set pr’s with hangovers, although I couldn’t lift as long I could go heavier.

There are also many scientific reports that binge drinking is worse then a little every day. Your doing pretty heavy damage to your liver.

Supposedly coffee is better for flushing out your colon and liver after drinking compared to green tea. Use the green tea throughout the week, but the coffee is better the next day.

Last but not least after your workout try your best to get some good recovery nutrients before drinking.

Ohhh boo fucking hoo. You only live once, and the guy sounds like he’s young. Big fucking deal.

First let me say that I try to enjoy a shot of whiskey every night, or used to. The story was that men who have a drink each night(one) live longer and healthier.

Alcohol is a poison. That is one of the reason that when you ingest alcohol, the liver stops all work, other than ridding the body of alcohol. It stops moving sugar into the muscles, just works to rid the body of the poison. Also the alcohol is as valueless carbohydrate. You are just piling in useless calories.

I knocked off all drinking for the past week, and my weight fell. This information has really cut down my alcohol intake.

If you want to drink, chug-a-lug.

It does have an effect, though it is more of an accumulation rather than a one time thing, unless you smash a car into a pole and do a header into the windshield or something. It’s more of what it does to your insides and your head than changes in physique.

The liver has been discussed, also affected are the kidneys and the lactic acid build up in the brain which becomes a screaming headache during that period called a hangover. Sometimes you might lose your motivation, but people that don’t drink can have the same problem. They just don’t have alcohol to blame it on.

It’s really nothing to get concerned about. People drink. Some become alcoholics. I’m sure at least one or two heavy lifters are also heavy drinkers.

It is not like a cheat meal, however. I’ve never been pulled over by the cops for operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of too many of the wrong foods. Many of by best stories start “One night when I was out drinking…”. None of them begin “I was just finishing my second pizza when…”.

It’s just not that big of a deal.

Like other folks said, depends on goals.

Ideally you’d skip drinking.

But you only live once.

So find a happy middle ground where you’re cool with it and tell everyone else to piss off.

Drink water with the booze and it will help a lot.
