Alcohol and Lifting Weights

Hey guys, Is it alright to have maybe 2-3 beers every other weekend and still make gains in the weight room?

Yes it is.

Yep, just don’t go on a binge

you can get drunk and still get bigger/stronger in the weightroom. Seriously, getting drunk even weekly will not kill your progress. Probably not the best idea when trying to get really lean, and no it is not “optimal”, but alcohol does not automatically equal your body shutting down all progress. If you get hammered then avoid early morning lifting the next day. Other then that you’re fine.

Especially since you said 2-3 beers every other week. It will have no noticable impact whatsoever on your progress.

Okay, because i hear from alot of people that drinking is going to hinder your progress. I just wanted to make sure it was alright to have a couple beers every now and then and still make the same gains in the gym.

2-3 beers every other weekend is so insignificant that it’s not going to affect you at all. If you enjoy those beers then I’d suggest keepIng them in over throwing them out.

google all about the liver and make a choice based off where you currently are. If you are a fat bastard with high estrogen and low test, then you are probably just aggrivating the problem rather than amplifying it. Some beers also contain gluten which causes problems for some peeps and hops als can cause a lot of problems for people. fwiw

Having sex often will likely keep you out of the gym also.

Better cut that out too.

Professor X, when you bulked did you drink any beer?

I hate beer. I don’t usually tell people that, but I generally just don’t like alcohol.

That doesn’t mean I am against it. It just isn’t for me.

My general philosophy is all things in moderation. The people who succeed at this are not usually the guys who stress out about all of the small shit. It is just a beer. If it becomes 5 beers a night, THEN you have a problem. The same goes for the hundreds of threads asking about marijuana. It’s the same shit. Ignoring the legal issue, if you are dropping out of school to smoke, you suck. That doesn’t mean everyone who smokes drops out of school.

The same goes for diet, your training schedule and the rest of your life.

The guys who really enjoy this shit are who will stand out. The ones giving up every bright aspect of their lives and enjoyment to slag their way to the gym are doing it wrong and won’t last.

That is why the guy who ate hamburgers can get way bigger than the guy who hated his diet the whole way through.

Cliff Notes:

Burger, burger burger.

Absolutely fine

Is drinking red wine more favourable over beer in terms of estrogen effects etc?

Binge drinking regularly will definitely hurt progress.

A few drinks however are definitely not going to hurt you, enjoy yourself. You could probably have 2-3 drinks per day and be fine.

I see three negative correlations with binge drinking and results. First, alcohol slows protein synthesis and recovery. Second, all the added cals from the beers/liquor and poor food choices we all make when coming home from a drunk night out definitely don’t help with staying lean. Lastly I know it hurts my wallet.

Anyways I would like to chime in in a few months as I have recently cut back drastically on the amount I’ve been drinking and hopefully can capatilize on it. Was binge drinking a lot at college and I am at the point where I don’t enjoy it anymore. Plus I have fitness goals that are a much bigger priority than going out every night. It’d probably be better if the extra cals I got in were from good foods rather than beers…

Workouts have been improving pretty quickly…Coming close to reaching some long term goals sooner than I thought.

Amen. Personally, I’ll take burgers over beer.

Dont forget the part of life where you are supposed to have fun! Letting loose every once in a while will not kill you, you can even work it into your diet!

Drinking doesnt have that much effect on your lbs you put up in the weight room, back when I was playing college ball we used to get smashed thursday nights, come in friday and pr! I have seen athletes that didn’t drink at all and athletes that drank 40 beers a weekend and as far as strength there was no advantages either way.

Now if you want to be lean, I don’t suggest killing a 30 every fri/sat but 2-3 beers will have no effect on you at all, It might even help to reduce stress.

I disagree that drinking doesn’t affect strength. If I go out and drink a lot then the next day I will not be hitting pr’s. It is most likely dependant on the individual but I personally could not see how anybody could have a decent training session with a hangover.

I’ll put it this way, I’ve benched over 405 and deadlifted over 600 with a diet of heavy binge drinking every weekend, but its at the point where I question, “can I be making more progress if I cut back on the alcohol?” and I think the answer is most definitely yes.

I would get smashed 3-4 nights a week drinking 1/2 a handle and then going to the bar each night. It’s just not cool. I am in college right now so I how it works.

I think that the athletes drinking 40 beers a weekend would be stronger if they didn’t drink. The ones who can get away with getting shitcocked and hitting PR’s the next day would probably catch bigger PR’s if the hadn’t gotten wasted.

It’s not like you can’t drink a lot and progress, but at the same time I think it’s kind of ridiculous to suggest that you couldn’t do at least marginally better without the booze in the mix. It’s a matter of good progress vs. optimal progress.

I still drink way more than is reasonable once every week or two since I’m a second semester senior and I’m not really into skipping every opportunity to get weird at this point, but I typically only drink before planned off days. 2-3 drinks shouldn’t hurt at all
