Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

Glad to hear you enjoyed it man!

Oh man, I read The Power of Myth in undergrad: what a blast from the past!

If you continue going down the Jack Donovan path, I’m digging his ā€œA More Complete Beastā€. Written in Neitzsche’s aphorism style, and talks to a lot of Nietzsche’s work.

Also really great, probably my favourite of Donovan’s stuff!

Will check it out!

No training today. Since I’m taking less classes now, I’ve been helping out my grandma and mom do stuff around their homes. My mom said ā€œYou don’t have to help out mawmaw if you don’t want toā€ when we were talking about things. I responded ā€œWell I amā€. It honestly pissed me off. I get what she was saying but A) who the fuck wouldn’t. It’s family who lost their caregiver and needs help B) I don’t have a job currently and I have more free time. If I did nothing to help, I’d be a piece of shit and my mind/actions would reflect.

Anyways, long day of watching my nephew and doing yard work. I will say, it was by far the most fun I’ve had in a long time. My best friend/roommate came over and we hung out in the pool with my nephew. Then I grilled wings (some got burnt because it was a different gril) for my family. I did not get time to work on my English paper BUT given that my niece-in-law was in a car accident where she would have died but didn’t, I’m not wasting time working on something for some asshole who won’t help me on his assignments.

This is the one and only English prof rant I’ll go on. I asked for help on developing a thesis and he said to use chatGPT, so I do. I show him what it gave me and the following conversation ensues: Me- ā€œI did and this is what it gave meā€ Him- ā€œMaybe it doesn’t know what a thesis statement is. You should ask it if it knowsā€. Ignoring the fact he never tried to help either time, he has taken points off and made comments on my thesis saying it wasn’t narrow enough. After a while and some help from my roommate, I got one made.
Lastly, he finally gave us back an assignment which is part of a whole assignment we turn in tomorrow. He had 3 weeks to grade this shit and gives it back at 1:30 on a Wednesday before it’s due on Thursday. It wouldn’t bother me if it was a separate assignment but now I have to rework what I’m turning in tomorrow because of his comments.
Also part of this final paper is ā€œUse of a primary sourceā€. It is never stated in the syllabus OR rubric that it is supposed to be an interview with a knowledgeable person in the field (Mines philosophy based) and you need to include the contact info. He mentioned this shit in class for the first time last week and it’s due early May. Outstanding respect for students and himself.
Finally (for real this time), I don’t want to get political but he shits on Donald Trump every class period. It’s actually amazing but it really shows how miserable he is as a person. Constantly talking about how his book got rejected and he didn’t want to sell out.
I feel as if I should be expected to give the same effort the professor does. I forget it’s a ā€œFuck you Pay meā€ situation. It’s amazing to me he is rated 1/5 on rate my prof. Like I said, it’s college so have to eat shit with the ā€œFuck you pay meā€ part

Anyways rant over. I’m just pissed I have to rework this shit since he decided to get our grading done. It’s also after spring break. He had ample time and I will die on that hill. If he didn’t, he could change due dates or explain to us what’s going on.

To end on a happy note, I got told to join in on a posing session between two of the strongest guys in them gym. I took my shirt off (I looked like shit) and they were like ā€œOnly if I had that confidenceā€ and ā€œLook at that chest hairā€. It’s a small thing but I’m meeting great people from this gym and starting to feel like I’ve found my place/environment.

Hey @T3hPwnisher speaking of Nietzsche, I’m hearing his concepts of ā€œlife denyingā€ practices and I was wondering what books are these thoughts in? I think it sounds really interesting, just don’t know where it is in his works.

Oh man, he talks about that in SO many of his works, it’d be hard for me to speak specifically to it. I imagine ā€œBeyond Good and Evilā€ will have it, along with ā€œGenealogy of Moralsā€, ā€œThe Anti-Christā€, The Walter Kaufmann translation of ā€œWill to Powerā€ (which wasn’t a book, but basically a publishing of his writing notes after his death), and quite possibly ā€œHuman, All Too Humanā€. I’m fairly confident in those first 4. Sadly, after having read almost all of his works, the specific parts don’t stand out, haha.

That’s kind of what I thought

This was my first Nietzsche so I imagine I didn’t pick up on it because of getting use to his style

I will check out the rest! Thanks!

No problem man! When you read Genealogy of Morals, the ā€œslave moralityā€ is life denying philosophy. Ultimately, life denying philosophy is a philosophy/practice that values weakness and demonizes strength. ā€œThe meek shall inherit the Earthā€ and such. If you think about that: if EVERY human practiced that sort of philosophy, our species would cease to exist, which makes it ā€œlife denyingā€. If ALL humans were meek, we could not endure or survive life’s hardships enough to perpetuate the survival of the species. It becomes necessary for at least SOMEONE to be strong for our species sake. Life affirming philosophy celebrates those values that modern man considers sin: pride, vanity, lust, gluttony, etc. Those that value these things tend to be the strong: they’re in a position where they CAN exercise these values. The meek are unable to…because they are meek, so they, instead, simply say that the values of the strong are vices, and that the values of the meek are TRUE values.

Taking another philosopher here, it’s interesting how Kant’s Categorical Imperative comes into play with life-denying philosophy. Everyone CAN’T exercise it, if the goal is survival of the species, therefore it doesn’t pass the test of being a categorical imperative.

…not that I CARE for Kant at all, haha, but fun to still make the connections.

That makes a lot of sense. I touched on this in my English essay basically saying that people who are mostly consumers have to exist so that people who practice existentialism and choose to pursue something in producing goods can exist.

I like that way of explaining master morality and what it meant. We touched on Nietzsche for one lecture in a class and it confused me more than helped. The prof said he wasn’t a huge fan of him but still.

That’s what I thought was weird about Kant. He’s too black and white. It might work on an individual/personal level but outside that maybe not

Notes:

  • RDL = 13in DL. I need to keep this in mind for future reference
  • I’ve noticed that more sets work a lot better than the AMRAP topset approach for me (for size and strength)
  • 13in DL could have been pushed for the last 50lb jump but week out from comp, I’d rather not
  • I think this week is going to be 2 lighter full body days to get ready for the show. Slight break from the bodybuilding stuff but I want to do well at the show. After that, right back to kong
  • Something like SBS hypertrophy might come back. I think now that I’m smarter training wise I can get more out of it. Was talking to a guy who runs conjugate for his programming. Going to get with him after my hypertrophy block because I have been wanting to give that a try
  • I was an ambassador for sports this weekend. Was at a crawfish boil and decided to inspire the youth (17 yr old). I will say I’m becoming the person I look up to

Thanks @Koestrizer @simo74! Feeling really good and extremely ready to compete!

Notes:

  • As always, I feel the strongest when doing my own thing. Working up to heavy attempts and being conscious of what RPE it is while doing a shit ton of volume/BB work for the rest of the session
  • I weighed 190 this morning. This is shocking because I knew I got bigger but I didn’t think it was much. Something about the vertical diet allows me to intuitively gain size without much fat (I know it’s cals in vs cals out BUT having something that I can not obsess over is amazing)

Comp week:

Strict log press: Work up to 175x1 (Huge PR)

Very surprised by this. Saving some light accessories for tomorrow because it’s supposed to be a nasty weather day. Also, interesting to note, I have been eating chaotically since January but emphasising hard lifting and protein. Might be something to that
