Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

Louisiana’s Strongman Comp Prep Plan:

4 Main sessions/1 events day:

Log Session:
Log C/P: 10x3 (80%), 10x2 (85%), 10x1(90%)
Weight chins: 10x5 (weighted)

Log Complex: 3 rounds/2min rest
:30 strict press
:30 viper
:30 Clean and press away

Back assistance: 4 rounds (90 sec)
DB Row
Pull over
Chest to bar pull up

Optional conditioning

Squat session:
GS1:
SB over shoulder during first sets
Front squat ladder
GHR in between sets

Assistance: 4 rounds (90 sec)
GM
Ab wheel
Reverse Hyper

Conditioning:
Leg blasters or prowler

Bench session:

GS1:
Bent over row
CGBP: Ramping
Leg raises
burpees

Assistance: 4 rounds
Pin press
Dips
Extensions

Push up challenge/conditioning

DL session:

Death by 13in DL

Assistance: 12min EMOM
Split squat
GM

Sandbag Conditioning

Events day:
Submax Yoke
Power stairs
Hercules hold

Just a framework. Will finish up later. Thinking about waving every H/M/L. Log press and 13in DL are the focus but I want to keep the benefits of front squat and bench so maintaining is the goal

Looking at the weights, I’m in a good spot for the Yoke/Sandbag run, log press max, and decent for the 13’’ DL ladder.

The 13in ladder is done like this. The programming I’m going to use is basically 10x3 and then an AMRAP backoff at ~60%. Gives me good heavy touches but I can also push the submax endurance

Attempt at lifting:

3x3 SB over shoulder: 150

Squat: 245x5

Played around with 200lb SB

Notes:

  • I attempted to lift today but knew I needed to cut out some stuff due to time constraints because of family coming in for funeral. Crazy busy day and I started getting irrationally mad even though the topset was fine. Mentally not there so I called it. Will attempt to hit this real session tomorrow after the funeral. If I miss the session, I’ll fuck up the program timeline so I might just this day out. Pretty sure it’s all the funeral stuff getting to me so I’ll be better after tomorrow
  • When I say irrationally angry, I mean hitting the squats and then just shoulder launching the 150lb sandbag to get the anger out
  • The robot part of me is calling myself a bitch for quitting but the human part of me knows why and understands

BASP C3W3D1

GS1:
3 SB loads: 150lbs
DL: 275x8, 315x6, 355x0
:15 sec KB swing
:30 L sit

Notes:

  • I fucking missed the topset. I do not know why but lots of stress from the funeral stuff. Indulged in some green to ease the stress on Saturday and Sunday. My shitty fucking performance is the result of shit sleep (green), shit eating, stress, and a bunch of late nights. This semester is panning out to a tough one so I might be switching to full body and then strongman saturday instead of 4x a week and strongman saturday.
  • I’ve also noticed there seems to be worse performance with lower body than upper body. Maybe everything is getting too heavy for lower body since I subbed lots of sandbag work for stronfman stuff. Maybe it’s just time for a deload
  • Next week is the deload and I think I need it. It’s been 8 weeks without a formal one and I think that’s where the anger and performance issues are stemming from. Just too much training stress without a deload.
  • My other sign of overtraining is when I just don’t want to lift. Now this could be more from the mental fatigue of school and learning
  • Regardless of all this, I will come back stronger. Get back to eat normally, sleep normally, and not acting like a stupid fuck
  • I really hate to sound negative when posting on here but it’s just reflective of where I’m at in general in life.

This will deff impact deadlift

This will also impact deadlift

We all have bad days, or shit weeks. The fact you still got in some training is a massive positive. Remember this is a journey and it all takes time. A few crap sessions here and there is not big deal. Get some rest, eat some protein, maybe get a massage and just keep on rolling on.

Thanks. You really help me to put everything into perspective! Having 8 weeks of pretty good sessions makes 1 week of shitty lifts seem like nothing when I take a step back!

Notes:

  • Fighting off a small sinus problem. I think this and the crazy workload from the first week of school are bogging me down. Extremely tired (almost fell asleep behind the wheel last night)
  • Lost last weekend and this weekend because of family events so training will just be 5/3/1 style AMRAP/FSL AMRAP for the week
  • It’s not the best but it’s better than not training
  • I’ve found that 5/3/1 AMRAP and FSL AMRAP is the best program for me. Looking back in my log, this has lead to the highest barbell numbers and my most muscular physique. Unsurprisingly the old style of lifting heavy and then bodybuilding the rest is great.
  • I’m starting to think 5/3/1 is great for when I can’t full on athlete. I noticed with BASP, the sessions required a lot to do and made me pay attention to recovery. While it was fun, 5/3/1 I don’t have to be as strict and can do other fun lifting stuff

Filling in the Week (FW?)

Press: 95x5, 110x5, 125x7, 95x12
100 Pull aparts

Notes:

  • Feeling mentally a lot better. Got into a good spot with the workload from school
  • Have a little bit of a cold. I think the cold, the funeral, and shitty sleep just put me in a bad spot
  • I’ve also just not wanted to train this week. I think this might be my sign of going too long without a deload and without the necessary recovery aspects.
  • Squats tomorrow. Still going to do the AMRAP and back off. I’m feeling better not training at all so that might be a sign of something. I’ll do the minimum and recover
  • Considering how this week has been a random deload. I might just skip the scheduled deload (next week) and move into the testing phase

Glad to hear you’re feeling somewhat better. Best of luck handling everything.

@LoRez I appreciate it!

Leaving this here so I don’t lose it especially the bit about decluttering your mind about being healthy and training

FW

SSB Squat; 155x5, 205x3, 245x1
Backdown: 20 sec rest: 3,3,2,2,1,1

Notes:

  • All squats were super upright and controlled (paused in the bottom) beltless

FW

Bench: 150x5, 175x3, 195x2 (Had 3, maybe 4)
Meadows Row: 60x3x10

Notes:

  • Good enough benching. 175 felt like shit and I was thinking 195 was just going to be a single
  • Also I noticed that thumbs width outside the smooth feels way better than my old grip of pinky on the first ring. Weird but I would guess it’s less shoulder stress the first way
  • I have a cold finally. It was fighting my immune system all week but now that it’s here, I’m not as tired. It weird my body almost always holds onto more water when I’m getting sick and that’s usually a definite sign something is going on
  • Going to hit some accessories and breathing squats tomorrow at SS. Then Mardi Gras ball. So another super busy weekend.
  • Finishing up “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor E. Frankl. Super good book and one line of something similar to “Boredom brings more misery than disarray” really stuck out. Loved the blend of Existentialism into his writing and clinical style. Really good book and I will be buying a physical copy (Audiobook)

One of my favorites, glad you liked it.

It was pretty good! Do you know of any similar that you’d recommend?

The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday.
Also, Jocko Willink is a decent writer, Extreme Ownership is a good one to start with. His books get pretty repetitive, so you could probably just read the first half and get the gist. So many Seals turn writers, but you can’t deny it takes a certain mentality to do what they did.

Will check this one out. I’m on the fence about him in general but if his books are good

I’ve read the book and it was okay but the Audiobook is 100x better

Thanks for the recommendations!

It does get a bit self-helpy, so I understand. One of those you get from the library, so it’s free!

OHP: 3 reps x 80

Conditioning: Death by sandbag squat: 5 rounds (2-4-6-8-10) 100lb bag

Notes:

  • Had the mardi gras ball this weekend. Actually practiced moderation and stayed away from hard drinks BUT I had a blast!
  • Whatever cold I had last week is gone and I feel great. The plan is to do Bench/DL deload on Thursday. Starting testing this weekend at Strongman Saturday.

BASP DELOAD:

12min EMOM:
Bench: 125x3
Axle DL: 190x3

Notes:

  • Thank god the deload is over. Shit was getting boring. I’m ready to get back training so I’m going to expedite the testing week (cutting out the back off work and making it last a week)
  • Also no SS this weekend. Gym is hosting a power lifting meet. So tomorrow I’ll make the drive out to go hit a log press PR
  • I strict press 120lb out of the rack for a quick single with no warmup. That felt pretty cool
  • I think dialing back the sessions for a short period of time beats just taking the period of time off
