Doing Dumb Stuff as a College Kid

It’s really one of the best parts about BBB Beefcake: Jim puts you on the clock. And, in turn, you get some WICKED DOMS, haha.

@T3hPwnisher I just got done driving for 1.5 hours and the fatigue and soreness almost made me fall when I got out my truck haha. I also used the figure 8 straps for 1 set and completely forgot they don’t let go like normal straps

@unicornsandrainbows I can’t lie. That’s always been my favorite part of the 5/3/1 challenge templates. You can get them done in like an hour or so if you bust ass but it’s going to suck a lot

BBB Beefcake

Time: 50 min

Bench: 135x5, 155x5, 165x5
BBB bench: 10,10,7,5,7,7,4
Machine row: 90x12, 100x12, Dropset: 120x13, 100x8, 80x6
Adductor machine: 100x20
HLR: 18,7
Seated box jump: 24”x3, 30”x3, 33”x1, 36”x1, 39”x1 (PR)

Notes:

  • I was using one of those shitty normal bench presses found in gyms. I had to play it safe with the BBB because the rerack was too high with the cambered bar
  • The machine rows felt good. The gym was too busy to super set
  • Box jumps felt really good. I’m happy with 39”

Oxygen debt 101:
2 rounds

  • Sprint 200m
  • Rest 30 sec
  • Sprint 200m
  • Rest 30
  • Sprint 200m
  • Rest 3 min

Notes:

  • this workout still sucks
  • I maybe had another round in me but my abs are cramping. Too much drinking and not enough water while in NOLA
  • I had a Guinness in an actual Irish pub (well as close as you can get to Irish in Nola) and it was really good. Now time to drink like the Germans and have some German food
  • @Koestrizer the Oktoberfest I’m going to today is put on by the German society of NOLA. Is there any thing food wise I need to try if they have it?
  • that’s 2 runs this week. That’s more runs than last week so that’s good

I am going to be brutally honest: I don’t think anything is gonna be that good. Even at the original Oktoberfest in Munich, you’re not exactly getting good Bavarian food tbh.

But if they have it: Schweinshaxe in dark beer sauce or Schäufle with Knödel and Rotkohl would be hot contenders

They had none of that but I got one of these:

Haha enjoy, mate. Undoutedly a product of Germany. I wouldn’t argue that it’s a good or popular one but let me know if it was your taste.

It was not haha

Can’t blame you… that’s something that, in my humble opinion, mostly older gentlemen with… stronger drinking habits enjoy, haha.

Not to say I don’t enjoy intense Schnaps per se but the bitter German herbal liquors are not much to my lliking. Underberg could maybe be considered the Jägermeister of older people, haha.

That said, I don’t like Jaegermeister either.

If we are talking about traditional German/ Austrian Schnaps that I actually like, it would be Obstler. Mostly Marille (apricot) or pear. But they vary greatly in taste and intensity, so depends on the brand.

Other traditional liquors besides herbal Schnaps and Obstler would be Kümmel-Schnaps (caraway seed), of which I stay clear, haha or Korn (grain). The latter, I consider the German equivalent to Vodka. I dislike both but it’s actually quite popular among young people to drink with Fanta or Cola.

@Koestrizer I actually enjoyed in more than Absinthe for some reason. We tried a few Schnaps options but they must have been cheaper since they all tasted like cough syrup. I’ll have to try a few of the other recommended liquors if I come across them!

@QuadQueen I’m not sure of how in the realm of your field this question is but is sudden coffee (apparently I’m fine with monster) intolerance with times of high anxiety/stress a thing? Saturday and today I had some cold brew, on an empty stomach before food, I got super nauseous. I didn’t vomit but my stomach felt super heavy and tight along with some heavy nausea

Training updates:
Just finished out 1 cycle of 5/3/1 BBB Beefcake but I’m going to be super busy with exams and papers over the next 3 weeks, so I’m going to switch over to the OG 5/3/1 challenge

I know this wasn’t to me, but it definitely makes sense. High stress is high cortisol, stimulants increase cortisol even more, one of the side effects of high cortisol is that it shuts down digestion (think “fight or flight”, you don’t want to be digesting food when you can divert that bloodflow to your body’s other processes) which results in a nausea response.

My thoughts on the Monster would be that the sweet flavor/artificial sweeteners trigger an insulin response, which is a counter regulator to cortisol, which could be why you’re not getting the compounding effect you get with a bitter drink like cold brew coffee.

I’m not a super expert, but this is actually pretty common with coffee. It’s a digestive irritant for a lot of folks and since your stomach and gut haven’t been exposed to it for a while, it’s like a reintroduction. Cold brew too is often higher in caffeine than regular coffee - so you may have gotten more caffeine than what’s in your Monster. Caffeine causes gastric and intestinal contractions and having more than you’re used to might have been a factor, if it was the caffeine. The acidity of the coffee could also have been a big player here. Energy drinks are acidic too, but the acidity of the coffee, along with the (maybe) additional caffeine and the bitter taste could all have parts in this.

Going back the reintroduction thing though, my money is on this being the culprit. Anytime you take something out of your diet for an extended period of time, it’s SUPER common that when you add it back in, you get to “enjoy” some fun gastrointestinal effects. It’s something new to your body and it’s not sure if it wants to be happy about it or not.

That makes sense! Mostly I’ve been having instant coffee so that’s definitely less concentrated that cold brew but I only had the monster this weekend which has been my first one in forever. Just wanted to make sure it was nothing to get looked at swiftly!

Bench: 125x5, 135x5, 155x9
Kroc row: 100x21

Notes:

  • this was most definitely a punch the clock session
  • Haven’t ate all day, I rotted for 2 hours after class, and I’ve been studying for my 3 midterms this week so all my reps feeling really powerful and snappy is a win
  • Neither of the top sets were true AMRAPs but they fitted the bill
  • There’s no way in hell I could muster the will power and energy for beefcake this week so this was a smart call
  • My legs are still tired from last week
  • @T3hPwnisher @SvenG these iron master DBs are awesome. I had a little more range in my rows and I really like the fact that they can be 5lb and 10lb DB
  • Lastly I did get myself a treat of some ground ribeye and ground bison. I’m really looking forward to that
