When the bar scrapes up against your shins and knees. How do you counter this, i’ve heard that powerlifters shave their legs. I dont want to go that far.
YES!!! My knees and shins look like they’ve been through a bloody war. On heavy sets I wrap a very thin towel around them. Tried wearing sweatpants, but the bar cut right through 'em. Ah the sacrifices…
Tough it out, sissy.
On heavy days, sometimes I wear some old shin guards I wore when I played soccer. It looks a bit strange, but it works great. Let these people go through the pain… I’ll work smart!

I have neoprene knee braces I use when I squat to keep my knees warm (recommended by Coach King) So when I deadlift, i just pull them part way up so I have 1/4" of neoprene padding from the lower part of my shins up to the top of my knees. This seem to work pretty well, keeps the knees warm and protects the shins. - Matt
i just let them babie bleed…
What do I do when the bar scrapes my shins? I fucking bleed! And shaving your legs won’t help one bit. Don’t be a puss, deal with it.
Baby powder works wonders on the thighs and it helps somewhat on the shins… Just don’t get it on your hands cuz’ it will kill your grip
I wrap athletic tape around my shins. Works fine
Bleed, baby, bleed. Hell, my shins are permanently scarred; from the sides the skin along the front looks like that of a burn victim. Wear it like a red badge of courage.
A couple of years ago at the Arnold Classic I saw Louie Simmons and his crowd all with cut-offs on, and big scabby shins, and they looked happy to have 'em.
No way around it; deadlift heavy and you bleed. So what's the problem?
let it bleed. but baby powder will help.
I have never gotten bloody shins. Am I doing something wrong? I don’t seem to have trouble clearing my shins and knees. I wonder if I’m doing something that may expose me to excessive back strain.
Wear long pants (rather than shorts) when you DL.
Take an old gym sock, fill it with baby powder, tie off the end (or rubber band it).
Keep it in a ziplock in your gym bag.
Handling only the outside of the bag (baby powder will cause your grip to slip if it gets on your hands), dab the sock on your legs like a powder puff. You’ll get a light coat of powder without making a mess.
Happy Deadlifting,

Have you tried doing them Sumo style? I switched to sumo because I’m tall and had a hard time getting the weight back down around my knees w/o putting a lot of strain on my lower back. Far less cuts that way.
You could also deadlift with a trap bar. Which I personally think is an exercise that gets way too little credit/ publicity.
I have permanent scars all over my shins, eventually got really pissed off with washing the blood outta my training bottoms , I went out and bought some shinguards ( those used by soccer players ) and put them on. OK you might look like a dick putting them on but at least you’ll use good form.
