Do I Need Supplements Now?

hello guys i am 36yrs old and only 134lbs 5"10, has always been a skinny guy, i have tried weight lifting before, but was never able to stick to a program, i have read some information form this site, and would like to start lifting weights at home, my questions are:

1.do i need to take any suppliments like protein , weight gainers, when i decide to start? or wont need that it for a couple off months?

2.doing triceps and chest on the same day wont get your triceps overworked? and what if thet get tired half way through your workout?

hope to get some feedback soon.

  1. Protein powders are pretty much regarded as food by most. Include them in your diet to assist you in getting the protein you need for growth. Weight gainers are usually garbage so save your money for some more steak.

  2. No they won’t get over worked and if you get too tired halfway through your workout you either need to get in better condition or stop being a baby about it haha. Or do less exercises and focus on 1-2 per bodypart.

To be successful you just need to be consistent with your diet and training and put in the time to see real results.

  1. Read a bunch of articles on T-Nation and find an author you like

  2. Pick a diet and workout plan from that author and follow them for six months

At that point you’ll know enough to be able to ask some questions about what to do next.

thank you guys apprecite all the help

If you were never able to stick to a routine in the past, I’m afraid you likely won’t now.

Consistency in your training and nutrition is necessary to achieve your goals.

As for supplements…protein powders and fish oil definitely help. A small handful of others like beta alanine and creatine mono are useful, but far from essential. Most supplements, however, are overhyped garbage and definitely will not make up for the shortcomings in your training and diet.

I think you have a split personality Contrl…some posts I see you are nice and helpful, others you are blunt and very to the point, coming off as a jerk, lol. No offense.

to the OP, just find a workout that will fit into your life style and since you are new, aim for 2-3 sets of everything with rep ranges of about 12-15 in the beginning,to help build up your muscle endurance, then progress into heavier weight.

That’s uncalled for Contrl. I dicked around with weights all my life but never became serious until I found Ahnolds book, then bodybuilding.com, then finally T-Nation. It’s never too late to make changes in your mind or your body. You wouldn’t tell people who are trying to quit smoking that they should just give up and get cancer would you??

redserv:

  1. Don’t “think about” or “get ready” to start lifting and dieting. Make like a Nike and JUST DO IT! Protein powder is a good idea at your weight, weight gainers just add sugar to the mix so add it yourself if you need it. Don’t go crazy buying everything. A good protein powder, multi-vit and fish oil are a good start. At 34, ZMA at night will likely help your T levels and sleep quality.

  2. Designing your own program or sweating little details like this will shoot you in the foot. There are more good programs on this site alone than you will ever need. Pick one you like and stick to it for a few months.

Study up on all the info you can find here. The more knowledge you acquire, the more excited and successful you’ll become and the easier it will be to achieve your goals. Don’t hesitate now after you’ve already taken the first steps. Start studying, lifting and dieting NOW. You have the rest of your life to analyze and modify your programs. Once you get the basics down you will find a healthy lifestyle becomes a habit rather than a chore.

Good Luck Man!

IME no. I was only 31 when I started but almost the same size as you. Haven’t touched a supplement and have gained 26 kilos in a year. The key is consistently eating more than I want to eat. (These words were typed while eating a rabbit liver)
