Diverticulitis Survey

At 49 I was diagnosed with severe diverticulitis. I was told that this is a result of not having enough fiber in my diet. I have eaten relatively well my whole life and have never really had a problem with constipation or any other gastrointestinal issues. I have been trying to determine if it is possible that years of heavy lifting may have contributed to this problem.

I’m looking to see if there are other older lifters out there that have been diagnosed with the same problem and feel there may be a connection to heavy deads and squats.

I think this is largely genetic. My mom has diverticulitis, and my grandmother has Krone’s disease.

A high fiber diet is supposed to help, but they also recommend avoiding nuts - of which many have lots of fiber. The advice can be confusing.

I’m sorry to hear you have this condition. It sucks.

Lately, I’ve eaten oatmeal every morning, and try to get veggies in most meals, but I’m sure the bad eating in my twenties and genetics have already set the condition for this to occur soon.

It sucks big time. I am still trying to dial in my diet to eliminate some of the problems. It just seems that there isn’t as much information as I thought there would be on it. I am the only one in both my immediate and extended family that has it and I thought it possible that in my younger years I may have done something by lifting heavy. I thought if there was a correlation to this, I would find it on this site. Thanks for your input.
