Difference Between MT and Boxing Gloves?

So in my search for a pair of gloves that don’t suck - Title is not cutting it anymore - a very good source recommended Boon Sports gloves, like these here:

http://www.kstargear.com/product/boon-sport-hook-and-loop-boxing-gloves

Not gonna lie, they look hot, I dig that old school brown color, and everything I read is pretty positive about their quality.

My question - being as I only box, is there a great difference between these gloves or other MT types and regular boxing gloves? They look pretty similar, and boxing gloves come in a million different cuts so it wouldn’t be abnormal to look different, but are these about the same, and will they hold up?

I’ve used only muay thai gloves (usually twins) and they look about the same as ‘regular’ gloves but I haven’t really paid attention so I’m not sure on the difference. Nice gloves, I’m due for a set this year and I might pick up a pair of those as well

I have never found a difference. I think the only difference you may find is that Muay Thai gloves are probably a little less “rigid”, so that you can more easily open your hands for clinching and shit like that.

bump fuckers.

Also, what do you guys think of Boon gloves in general? Seems to be high praise for them, but I never heard of them before.

And should I get the 16’s or the 14’s?

Some Thai gloves have a little more padding around the cuff to take a little shock off when you’re blocking kicks and such. I don’t think there’s really a noticeable difference either way though.

It seems to me that MT gloves are wider, maybe the padding like was mentioned. Also the amount you can open your hand is different from the gloves I have used.

as far as what is better than the other it is really hard to say. I think a lot of it is personal. I am using Cageside MT gloves right now and I also have an older pair of Rev Gear boxing gloves.

i have a pair of Ringside gloves that i really like.

Are you using these for training? If so I would probably go for 16s for more padding and protection.
but it comes down to personal preference if you are just using these to train

is this personal use or do you have a trainer? if so, he/she would probably tell you what they want you to have

Nah I work out pretty hard, and I know that if I spar I’d have to have the 16’s. Just curious if MT gloves ran big - I thought they’d run smaller actually - because then I’d consider the 14’s.

Most likely picking up the 16’s.

Which pair of Ringsides did you get? I hear good and bad things about them… I’m wary of getting them because nobody I know has them haha. They’re not huge at my club for some reason.

I have this pair:

I had never really heard much negative or positive when i bought these, my trainer had a really old pair of ringside gloves that he loved so i figured i would give them a go, I like them a lot, really good protection for heavy bags and good for sparring also. when i had my shitty everlast gloves it would hurt to hit the uppercut bag, it would slide and my thumb would just feel weird. with the ringside gloves i don’t get that same feeling.

I would ask around your gym, the guys you know are good, or some of the trainers, they will all have their own opinion but you might get some of the same feedback and then i would go with what you hear the most good things about.

Interesting.

But yea, the guys at my gym are all at about the same point - dissatisfied with Title, which was my old brand of choice - and unsure of where to go to find affordable gloves that don’t suck.

The Boons were recommended to me by Kelly McCann actually, and his word is golden to me. Especially because I know that if they’re holding up for his training, which dwarfs mine, they’ll hold up for me.

Plus they look pretty sweet haha.

Yeah I felt the same way. As much as I like my ringside gloves, I wouldn’t go back and spend that much money on them again.

I would just shop around and try some under $50 pairs of gloves until you find ones you like and stick with.

In my opinion how well you wrap your hands is more important than the glove you are wearing.

When my cousin would wrap my hands it didn’t matter what gloves I had on he did it so well.

Don’t have any experience with Boons, but a couple of my training partners have some Combat Sports equipment (gloves, headgear, MMA gloves, and shin guards) and they seem to really like them. They also aren’t as expensive as some of the other brands (like Reyes, Fairtex, or Pro Mex). Since one should never allow someone else to use your gloves, I have never personally tried them out though, so I can only tell you what they’ve told me.

What gloves do you use Sento?

I have a pair of LSM (Lysak’s Sento Method) signature series gloves that are made by a company called Proma USA located in Clifton NJ. I have owned some Titles, Centurys, and a really cheap pair of Everlasts in the past. The gloves I have now are significantly nicer than the Centurys or the Everlasts and I personally like them better than the Titles that I had.

I got a pair of gloves from Combat Sports not long ago, I like them way better than I expected.

Yea… I’m just disgusted with Title’s shitty products and I’m moving on. And like I said, once Kelly McCann recommended Boons I was pretty much sold, as one might imagine.

Buying gloves is hard as fuck when there’s not a store you can walk into to try them on. It’s frustrating to say the least.

http://www.combatsports.com/csi/gloves/boxing-sparring-gloves/contender-fight-sports-training-glove-hook-loop-7735.html

These are the gloves I bought recently. Pretty compact design, they feel fast and not like I’m wearing gigantic pillows on my hands. A little hard to get into with the roll down cuff, but once you’re in I really like the fit and I like the cuff keeping the elastic from coming undone and scuffing up my training partners and whatnot.

But those Boon gloves are pretty sweet looking too.

Tuf Wear gloves (sold by TITLE) are not too shabby. I have these:

http://store.titleboxing.com/tuf-wear-pro-air-boxing-gloves.html

Not too rigid…not too soft. A tad bulky…but they have held up. I now own some Ring To Cage brand gloves as well. Luckily won these through FB contest. I use these for my technical/contact drills and sparring. The Tuf Wear are strictly bag gloves now.

http://www.ringtocage.com/Platinum-GelTech-Training-Gloves-Safety-Strap-RC10LE.htm

Very compact and tight for a 16oz glove. I bet they are similar to those Boon gloves. Can’t go wrong with them…good handmade quality,Irish.

Those are actually pretty nice Big Boss. And they’re located really close to me in Rutherford.

Only question - I see they have that gel shit in them; do these feel top heavy as a result? I know the Title gels feel like there’s an f’n lead weight over the fist and you can stand them on the table and they stay knuckle down haha.

Are these like that too, or are they lighter?

And how are they performing for you?

Very interested…
