I’m looking for new bag gloves to be used for hitting the pads and the heavy bag. My 8 oz. gloves are not cutting it as far as protecting my hands- by the time I’m done with two rounds on the bag, my knuckles feel like they’re getting destroyed and the bones are sore.
So, I’m looking to get new ones. I’ve had great experiences with Title brand gloves, so I’m going with them… but what size would you recommend? I used 16 oz. gloves when I was training more seriously, but I’m curious as to what everyone uses as far as weight.
I believe the black ones are pretty much the exact gloves I use and they seem to work well. 14s seem to be fine for me on the heavy bag, but maybe that’s just because I punch like a bitch.
Twins. I love my 16oz Twins boxing gloves to death. Excellent padding and support. The Thais really know what they are doing with gloves. Lots more padding on the back of the glove as well.
I also have a pair of Ringside Heavy Hitter 20 oz. gloves that I use from time to time for specific heavy bag drills. I wouldn’t go lower than 14 oz for your primary gloves for bag work. Just make sure you get a glove that has padding that will hold up over time and good wrist support specifically for pounding the bag.
I just realized that I have a lot of damn gloves.
Also,a lot of Thai brand(Twins,Windy, etc) or “Thai-style” gloves have short wrist cuffs that are not ideal for really digging into the bag, imo. And as a note(you probably already follow this…no strike at your intelligence),use your heavy bag gloves for just that…and nothing else.
Also, how has your shoulder been holding up…and more importantly how does it hold up when you’re hitting the heavy bag hard??
The Title gloves with gel are pretty good. I’d honestly go with the mid-high range Titles, they’ve always seemed to last longer than other gloves I’ve had and give you good protection, support, and feel pretty good too.

Everlast, I have noticed, are not very good at holding up. That’s why I’m switching to Title. A buddy of mine had’em, and I loved them.
Ironically, it holds up great hitting the bag and doing most boxing drills.
I’m actually going to a specialist tomorrow to look into solutions… i.e. surgery.
You didn’t mention if you wrap your hands or not. If you do, nevermind. If not . . .
Wrap your hands and it won’t matter what gloves you use. You should 16 oz or 14 oz gloves for conditioning purposes. I use the 14 oz for pad and bag work and always the 16 for sparring. But you have to wrap your hands no matter what you are doing. Even when I do some MMA standup sparring with takedowns and grappling my hands are wrapped. You may as well get used to it as you will always fight with your hands wrapped. If you are punching, wrap.

Did I use the word wrap enough times?[/quote]
Appreciate it.
Apparently it doesn’t matter if or how I wrap my hands… 8 oz. gloves are too light for me.
I’m not saying I hit like Marciano, but I’m 180 lbs and I know how to punch… I think the gloves just don’t provide enough protection.
I’ve used 16’s and never had a problem, but never used 14s. Just curious as to how much of a difference there is.
I must hit really lightly then.
I do everything barehanded.
Mind you my knuckles are sore (if i touch them they hurt) but my hands don’t become injured.
Is there something i’m missing?

Are you sure the padding just hasn’t been broken down, how long have you had your gloves?

Nah. I know what it feels like when the padding starts breaking apart- it’s not that. The gloves have given me trouble right off the bat. My right hand gives me a lot of trouble because I broke a couple of the knuckles in a fight years ago and it never healed… but my left is fine normally.
With these gloves, however, I can’t go more than two rounds before the pain is excruciating in both hands.

Are you using knuckle guards? If not, they’ll help a lot.

I’m not but I just saw them on Title’s site… I may end up using them in the future.

They’re definitely a good investment if you’ve bad hands.
I’ve had Everlast-they suck! Didnt like Title either though! Honestly Twins have been the best glove I’ve used. I like 8oz. For Bag and pad work and use a bigger 16oz to spar with.

I’ve been using my friend’s pair of 16 oz. Title Gel gloves off and on for a few weeks. They are very comfortable. Unfortunately it’s been a couple years since I was full time into kickboxing and I was using Chinese gloves so I haven’t had much experience using the good stuff. Maybe if you have any specific questions about fitment or whatever I can help . .
I have no problems with 14 oz. gloves. Of course I’ve only been training at the house now with a 100lb heavy bag… When I was going to the gym they had a few 300lb bags and I would occasionally get sore knuckles still.
