I never knew going to the gym was so complicated.

Really. I’m interested to hear. Cause, see, I figure, I pay for my gym membership each month. That means that when I go into the gym, I can use any free equipment I want. That’s what I pay for. If someone else is using it, I’m SOL, or I ask if I can work in. If they say yes, cool. If they say no, or there is too much difference in the weight we’d be using, I go do something else.
And if they do let me work in, it’s my responsibility to change the plates. They’re doing me the favor by letting me work in (though, it always works out that each person changes the plates on one side, anyway).
If I’m at the bank, I wait in line, and when the teller is free, they take care of whatever I need. Now, if Bill Gates walks into the bank behind me, he waits till the teller is done with me. Doesn’t matter if my transaction is for 100 dollars and his is 100 million – as a customer of that bank, I have as much right to the services they provide as a very rich person.
Same as when I’m driving. There are other cars out there that are much faster than mine… should I pull over whenever I see one in my rearview, because I’m getting in their way? Nope.
Here’s what you need to realize, X: Nobody gives a fuck how big you are. It means shit to everybody in the gym except you, and they don’t owe you any favors (such as finishing an exercise early or letting you work in) for it. It’s a favor, if they do it for you, you thank them. If they don’t, you be mature enough not to get pissy that someone didn’t do you a favor.
Seriously, get the fuck over yourself.
Next time tell him you are getting ready to do 20 sets with the fucking machine. Then just do pussy ass weight to piss the guy off. This does not really accomplish anything but pisses them off and makes you feel good about the fact that you just got him pissed. That is what I would do but I love to be a dick.
Also since I was at the machine first, even if the guy asked nicely to work in with me it is my call if he gets to or not. So if the OP doesn’t want the guy to work in with him say no, and if I was in the OP’s shoes and noticed him staring I would be a dick about it. That is comical that some of you expect people to give up their shit since you are obviously “there with a purpose” lol fuck you guys.

Your bank analogy is just plain dumb, the amounts may not matter, but you can’t stand there and take up all of the tellers time and not let anyone else use their services, ala workout equipment. To go along with the driving analogy. In relation to driving on a highway that we all pay for via tax dollars(the gym/gym membership).
Some idiot is doing 15 in a 65 zone, in otherwords, person on machine is wasting time( i do believe in most jurisdictions that going too slow and impeding traffic is not allowed and the thing that is taught in drivers ed is to pull over to let them pass). Same thing with someone hogging the one piece of equipment that you need and they aren’t doing shit on it, essentially just fucking around(if they are actully working hard than no biggie).
Either way they will be given time to finish as is custom, but after that 15 minutes or so, if you are still messing around and not working hard, then get the fuck off. Same with driving, if someone is going way below the speed limit in good conditions, they must yield to the other drivers coming up from behind.
What some of you dings don’t realize is that it isn’t about how big one is, it’s more about common courtesy and decency which apparently many many people lack.
Personally i am usually pretty laid back about working in with people and etc. I rarely run into any problems because i can usually work in with them, find a substitute or rearrange my workout until the machine opens up.

Why would he sit there until ALL of his sets are finished and allow no one else to work in?
Where did the OP write that he sat on the calf machine during EVERY rest period after every set, and where did he write that he didn’t allow the other guy to work in?
From what I gathered, the bigger dude didn’t even ask to work in. Well, unless you consider asking how many sets the OP had left to be ‘asking’. Of course, with only one set left and the OP stating he rests less than a minute between sets it’s not at all unreasonable to not even bother with extending an offer for something the guy was too douchey to straight up ask for - yet still throw a hissy fit over - in the first place.
Asking how many sets you have left also stands for “let me work in” unless the weight difference between the two is an issue.
You should really update that Gym-Ebster’s Dictionary.
So, yeah, if the guy was perceived to not be training that hard, continuing to do another set could very well make the guy waiting wonder what the hold up is.
You can chalk that up to a communication error or whatever, but the fact still remains he did another set even though someone was clearly waiting on the machine and you are ASSUMING he was only resting for 60 seconds between sets or that he appeared to be training seriously.
Sorry X, I gotta throw the flag at this one. If I want to work in with someone, I ask if I can work in. If I’m asking how many sets a person has left, it means I want to know how many sets that person has. The OP clarified the situation a bit. Gotta say, the other guy was a douche, based on that clarification. At the moment, I think a quiet exit would be best, as that elitist badge is shining brighter and brighter. Not good. While I greatly appreciate the knowledge you bring to the table, I can’t get down with your stance in this situation.
Why would I care whether you agree with me? Neither one of us were there, but one thing is true, the OP couldn’t even hear everything the guy said or how many times he said it…meaning it is now up to you to assume who was in the wrong here.
The other guy isn’t here to defend himself at all…but my guess is that if he were, we would get a much different picture of events.
There is no “elitism” involved at all.
You ASSUME quite a bit here when one party was oblivious to what was going on around him other than seeing someone look at him…and then you assume the other guy’s intentions and attitude, based on what?
I realize neither one of us were there, and we only have the OP’s word to go on, however, I think I make it clear that we are only dealing with the OP’s side numerous times. And I think it’s safe to say that we are all guilty of assuming things in the scenario presented. You’re included in that. As for whether or not you care that I agree or disagree with you, that is not the point.
Based upon your words, as I’ve stated before, it reads as though because you are pretty big, people should dole out an extra bit of respect for you in the gym. It reads as though, if you ask how many sets one has left, that they are required to understand that you either A)want to work in, or B)want them to hurry. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m a pretty straight-forward person. As I said previously, if I want to work in, I’ll ask to work in, as not everyone is hip to your version of gym etiquitte. Or mine, for that matter.
As for the elitist thing, you make it sound as though people should come to the gym with your focus, dedication, intensity, and what-have-you. All I can say is different strokes for different folks. Some days, I am Mr. Intensity. Others, like when my mind is elsewhere, or I am just having an “off” day, I go through the motions. Nothing wrong with that. I’ll stop right there, as it’s time for breakfast.

The problem I see is this thread has become an extension of your Asshat thread, which I totally agree with but this however is different! 4 sets on a calf machine with rest periods of under a minute does not equate to hogging a machine. If this was in fact the case the guy eyeballing the OP would have begun his EYEBALLING ON THE 2ND SET making him a fucking nutjob!Big or not, he is a wanker and I cant understand how you dont see it?
You persumtion that those of us who have sided with the OP dont train around big guys is an over generalisation and suggests that we have a problem (jealous) of big guys! I train with national & internationally ranked powerlifters, bodybuilders and strongmen and I have no problems with anybody, most of them are mates! Again I dont train in a commercial gym!
Our members have to be vouched for no one else can get in. Maybe a gym like this would suit you down to the ground? No asshats, no shit talking, no squat rack curls period! Everyone is held accountable for their actions just like that strong man who was acting the dick (probably brought that attitude from the commercial gym he occaisionaly trains in)
Wayyy too many skewed opinions here’ Im going to finish my breakfast…
This thread makes me happy to be a short fat guy at the gym. Now I know it pisses all you big fuckers off when my short fat ass is breathing your air, there is nothing I like more than pissing you fucks off who think you are better then anyone. Some of you guys are living in your own fantasy world, where apparently everyone should give you what you want since you are bigger then them. It is just awesome to actually hear people be so ridiculously full of themselves.
I actually had my friends and family read parts of this, they died lol when they read some of the stupid comments about VIP cards and giving up a machine you are using to some one else because they obviously have a plan to use it.
Thanks for laughs.
Oh and just to make sure there are no misunderstandings I have no problems with big guys. I have a problem with big guys that are so full of themslves they can’t understand how ridiculous they sound. Where I lift we are all pretty good friends, there are some truly big guys but they aren’t total dicks, they are actually very friendly.

Yeah but what’s the point of working in when there’s only 1 set left? The other dude couldn’t wait the extra 60 seconds then have the machine all to himself? Why was he eye fucking the back of the OPs head in the first place? He couldn’t have just asked “Hey man, mind if I work in?” from the start instead of staring at him like a weirdo?
I might be wrong as far as etiquette goes, but if someone asks me to work in, I’ll let them. If they ask me “how many sets” I’ll tell them and offer to let them work in EXCEPT if I’m on my last set. I don’t see the point in it. It’s like an extra 60 seconds and I’ll be out of your way for good. Just let me finish up. When someone tells me “1 more set” I’m glad. It means I get the machine all to myself. I’d rather wait for the dude to finish than work in.
Another thing. If someone is wearing headphones, I assume they can’t hear me. I get their attention and wait for them to acknowledge me BEFORE I start speaking. Common sense.

Wow, haven’t been this ticked off at someone at my gym in a while.
So I’m sitting on the seated calf raise machine with about four plates loaded on it facing the way one is supposed to when using the machine. I look in the mirror and this dude is staring at the back of my head, about 4 feet behind me.
Now, this guy is pretty huge. Probably could be a pro BBer. I don’t know why this is relevant but thought I’d throw it in there.
So I turn and look at his face and he looks away. I continue to sit there waiting for my next set. The next thing I know he is at the side of me, talking (I wear the kind of headphones that are like earplugs and can’t hear shit with them in). I take one out and he says, “Hey, you using that.”
WTF DO YOU THINK YOU FUCKSTICK. NO, I’M JUST SITTING ON THIS THING, WITH BEADS OF SWEAT ON MY FACE AND PLATES ON THE MACHINE FOR NOTHING.
I say, “Ya, it’s my last set.”
He rolls his eyes, sighs, and puts down his water bottle about a three feet from me and proceeds to wait.
I don’t know why the shit pissed me off so much. Probably because when someone is on a machine, I sit back a ways and don’t stare at them like I am trying to rush them.
What do you guys think? Do you stand and stare at the person when you are waiting to use the machine they are on? Because if you do, you should kill yourself. thx.
I was being sarcastic but I suppose that was lost on you!
PX’s point in this discussion, which you failed to realise’ was about letting more experienced guys use a specific piece equipment ‘over’ people who have less experience, hence his hypothetical example of the US Track Team as compared to himself ‘running on a treadmill’.
Now this leads us on to main point of PX ‘wanting’ a specific piece of ‘weight training’ equipment over someone with less experience than him (based on his view of that person btw). Can you see where the comparison starts to gel???
Two threads about gym etiquette were being discussed in the GAL forum, one about ass-hats (which PX had a valid point) and the other about dickheads (which PX was way off!) and this is where the lines were blurred…
BTW who’s Tina?

You’re a fucking idiot. No one is talking about jumping off a piece of equipment simply because someone is more advanced. It is a combination of someone not doing anything but wasting time on a piece of equipment and staying there for an extended period of time (because in excess of 15min is too damn long for anyone unless you are an advanced athlete) and the other guy being way more advanced meaning the two can NOT train together without it causing undue stress on one of the parties because taking off and putting on 20 fucking 45lbs plates is too much hassle.
People who actually train hard usually have no problems like this in the gym. I RARELY run across anyone having issues like this in a gym and any situations that I have had have been because of some really little guy trying to test me for some reason.
People who train hard don’t waste time on machines lifting one single ten pound plate on each side with no strain in their bodies at all as in the situation I described.
People who train hard don’t need to be rushed off a piece of equipment after staying there for 20 fucking minutes chatting with friends on their cell phone.
So yes, if some guy is wasting time on a machine and they stay on it keeping anyone else from using it as they read a fucking magazine, they need to get the fuck up.
If you want to believe the OP was training hard and ONLY spending 60 seconds between sets and rushing right along, so be it.
I don’t personally believe that at all. I think the op is closer to a New Year’s Resolutioner than someone working their ass off with serious goals…and my guess is, other people can see that as well.
If you think people chatting on phones and people sitting on machines while talking with friends and people lifting weights so light that there is no tension in their body at all need to be treated the same as people there to work hard, then so be it. Not everyone else agrees with you…nor should they.
I wouldn’t get shit done in the gym if I literally had to deal with idiots like that all day long. Luckily, I hardly ever do.

Hey I dont WANT to believe him I just do!
It’s not that hard to imagine doing 4 sets on a calf machine, with headphones on and in the zone! To me this sounded like a very plausible situation. What got me however was this other guy (his size is irrelevant) was eyeballing him on his second set’ WTF! He had a chance to talk to the OP but he chose not to, which smacks of immaturity.
Fuck it’ I cant go on because it’s been said already…

I don’t personally believe that at all. I think the op is closer to a New Year’s Resolutioner than someone working their ass off with serious goals…and my guess is, other people can see that as well.
Thats cool and thats where we differ…

If you think people chatting on phones and people sitting on machines while talking with friends and people lifting weights so light that there is no tension in their body at all need to be treated the same as people there to work hard, then so be it. Not everyone else agrees with you…nor should they.
I wouldn’t get shit done in the gym if I literally had to deal with idiots like that all day long. Luckily, I hardly ever do.
Again I totally agree with you about chatting etc. but it depends on the gyms you go to. I run a gym with 1000 plus members and you could describe it as a ‘social’ place where people meet and chat, just like you hate, but that is the nature of the place and that is what the majority of members pay for. We have a few competitive triathletes, cyclist and runners (no lifters) that piss and moan about the chatters, equipment hoggers, the time wasters etc. but as ‘adults’ they knew what they were buying into.
Unlike them, I train in a different type of gym for serious lifters/trainers, closed off to outsiders (unless invited) where this shit does not happen and so I am at peace with myself ![]()
