Deploying

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some suggestions from the group here. I am in the Army and deploying to Iraq next month. I currently work out 5 days a week, working each body part once a week. While I am deployed I am going to try to do push ups, sit ups, and pull ups for my upper body, and lunges with some improvised wieghts (sand bags) for my lower body. I am only concerning myself with maintaining what I have, and providing some kind of stress relief. My question is what kind of supplements should I take with me. Right now I am only planning on taking a multi-vitamin/mineral with me. I do not want my wife to have to pay out the nose for postage to keep me resupplied. I am just looking for suggestions. I currently take EFAs, multi vit/min, whey protein, Tribex, and use creatine off and on (I seem to hold water when I use it too long)I would love to take EFAs, but I do not think the capsules would do very well in the hot weather. Thanks

Tough one, I think honestly you are going to have to deal with the future loss and plan on a way to gain it back. I have several friends in the military and I really see no way for you to maintain your physique. Hot-Rox might help slow down the wasteing effect of being in the field, but I assume this is going to be longer than a decent supply would last. I hope someone else has some ideas, and stay safe. Good luck. God speed on getting back.

Thanks for serving!

As for maintaining LBM, that really depends heavily on what you currently have. I mean if you are 7%bf, 250 pounds and 6 feet tall it’s quite a bit different than being 12%, 200 and 6 feet.

Either way, I would just keep with the regular multivitamin. Try to eat the best stuff you can find while on base, keep up with the pushups/situps/pullups/lunges and so on, and when out in the field on mre’s just eat what you feel you need, don’t engorge on the dessert portion unless you need it.

BTW, my brother is going on a similar deal next week, except to afghanistan.

Good luck.

I’d think the whey could be the most important thing to bring, but that’s a guess.

Good luck, keep your head down and come home safe.

Good luck bro. My advice is to forget about the supplements aside from the multi and focus on what is important, security. I don’t know what your MOS is or what kind of things you’re going to be doing, but depending on where you go you’ll have more or less opportunity to train. If nothing else, I’d agree with doing those bodyweight exercises and trying to find some buddies to grapple with to keep your skills sharp. You can worry about your mass and bodyfat later.
