About 3 weeks ago, I noticed pain from deep within my right hip when doing single-leg press with large ROM (I have very good lower body flexibility).
I thought nothing of it since it doesn’t hurt at all except during very specific movements. I noticed pain when mounting my bike (lifting the leg and externally rotating to swing it over the top tube of the bike. Basically it hurts when I try to do something like this: http://cf.ltkcdn.net/yoga/images/std/113716-281x425-Learnhowtobalanceononeleginyoga.jpg
I’m on 5/3/1 and my hip hurts on squats that are anything wider than shoulder width apart (again, that external rotation is the key). I do conventional deadlifts so squat days are the only days when pain is apparent and an obstacle.
I though it might be anterior, but foam rolling and lax ball do not reach it. It feels like it is coming from deep within the hip, which causes me to worry (if it’s a cartilage or joint issues, I may need surgery).
I’ve searched the web for advice, but most people just tell me to stretch my hip flexor, which don’t do shit (again, the pain is far deeper within the hip for a simple hip flexor stretch or foam rolling to solve. I’ve also been told to rest it, but I notice no improvement even after two weeks of skipping hip movements.
I want to see a sports doctor or chiropractor, but I’m a student and dead broke. Need to exhaust all my options first before considering a trip to the doctor.

I’m just going to give you a suggestion; try that same position you showed but lay face down. Then turn your head in the opposite direction of the leg that is bent. It maybe coming from your lower back.
Also Google SI joint. The motion of the lower squat or rolling the hips up on a leg press MAY be the culprit.

sorry if your in ny I cant help ya out, sounds like it could be a labrum issue, look up hip labrum testing anterior/posterior labral test. This is one reason I advocate for a good deal of motion but avoiding extreme ranges of motion as the end ranges of motion tend to place stress on noncontractile tissues. I would start doing some things to create blood flow in the hip region, clams, resisted internal/external resistance with tubing, lateral walks with resistance band and see how it feels. Anything painful I would avoid at the moment to let it calm and scar down.
I’m having surgery to repair a torn hip labrum on the 20th.
My pain was on the outside of my left hip–right behind the greater trochanter notch. The most painful symptom was external rotation while my hip was flexed. It felt like someone stabbed me with a knife and twisted it.
My pain wasn’t typical with a labrum tear but that movement I described is commonly one of the more painful movements (according to my Dr).
I had pain with squats but less pain with front squats. Eventually I had to stop all squatting though. An MRI with contrast finally revealed the problem after about 6 months of pain, confusion, and frustration.
And the picture the op posted in the first post.
I have snaps in the hip going from hip flexion to extantion(not painful).
Very tight lower back on the side of the hip thats causing problems. I do deadlift though.
I went to chiropractors and a physical therapist to treat my low back and hip. I thought it was muscular and I found that my IT band, quadratus lumborum, and iliopsoas were all tight. My current chiropractor said it’s possible that my body was trying to guard the injury and that’s why everything is tight. I hope she’s right and those muscles calm down after surgery.
I also Deadlift and I set a PR of 495 while dealing with this
Good job
What do you think about my symptoms ?
Maybe a tear?
I can deadlift no problem with the hip situation but the lower back tight dont know why.
Can it be a tear like yours?
It’s possible but so are a lot of other things. Don’t convince yourself it’s torn. A Dr or chiropractor who knows their stuff might be able to do some tests (joint manipulation, no scans) to get a better idea.
