I bet if a survey was taken, 95% of women of all ages would prefer a man with a “Brad Pitt” build than a Mr.O build. Besides, Brad looked pretty good in Troy. Why don’t you see really muscular guys on the cover of magazines (except muscle mags) or in advertising? Because it’s not a popular look. Sure, a muscular guy will attract attention (but mostly from other guys), but the lean and athletic look still gets the women excited. Yes, this is a bodybuilding website, but I’d rather be 170lbs with abs than 200lbs and a gut. Just my opinion.

I was a ripped-up 170, 175 or so with shoes and all, and I got and still get a bunch of attention. People ask me the usual uninformed questions.“Do you work out 4 or 5 hours a day? Are you on steroids?” At 170 pounds?! I sure better get my money back! Most girls do dig a smaller, more cut-up physique, but I wouldn’t want to be as skinny as Brad.

my saving grace, but ain’t it the truth?
it is a security thing. women like a good looking man with some beef, but they don’t want us to be so lean as to make them feel fat.
i speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help my black @ss.
A few months ago at around 190#, 10%bf my ex complained that I was “not soft enough” (uncomfortable to rest her head on?) and seemed to have some complex about me being all “in shape” and her being “fat”. I REALLY don’t understand girls…

Just wondering… all you muscle studs with 19 inch arms…what’s the ratio of guys to girls that come up to you and want to touch your arms? I ask because a friend of mine is freakin’ huge and ripped (his arms are unreal). He goes to the bars and it’s the guys who always come up to him and say “dude, your arms are awesome!”. Girls could care less.
Overall, if you’re trying to impress girls, personality will beat musculature every time (unless you’re a big fat sweaty slob). Combine muscles and personality for best results. Even the shallow girls want a little personality.
Just because they don’t come up and start feeling you up, doesn’t mean they’re not impressed. When was the last time you up and grabbed a strange girls ass just because you liked it?
None of the girls I’ve dated ever grabbed at me before we were dating, but they’ve all been all over my arms and chest once we were together, and all have told me about how they used to like to look at my body. I realize that sounds pretty arrogant, but I’m sure I’m not the only one here who’s had that experience. Most girls aren’t comfortable just massaging strangers on the street, even if they like to see their muscles.
In my experience most girls like guys with muscle even though most don’t admit it. Here is a sample of a usual conversation with new girls I meet.
Girl: Wow, you must work out.
Me: Yes.
Girl: I don’t like guys with big muscles.
Me: Some girls don’t.
Girl: Can I feel your arms?
So a lot of girls say they don’t like it, but when it comes down to it they also probably look at guys with muscle and wonder what it would be like to be “taken” by a big, muscular man instead of the little Brad Pitt or Eminem types…

I truly think women don’t even believe all of what they actually say when asked what they like. Those same girls screaming “ewwwww” in high school upon seeing a bodybuilding magazine are the same ones going out with the more muscular guy on the football team.
I also think many are simply turned off by that competition shape look. Most women couldn’t even name 5 different muscle groups so of course they wouldn’t care whether their man’s serratus anterior is showing.
I was just relaying my friends story. His muscle gets more attention from the guys than the girls. No, he’s not gay. I’m not saying girls don’t like muscle, but given the choice of men, at least 95% (maybe more) would prefer the Brad Pitt look over the Mr.O look. I would guess the “Men’s Fitness” cover guys are probably the ideal. There is a point where you go overboard on the hugeness-factor. I’m a looooong way from that. Ever hear a girl say “wow, he squats 500 pounds. He’s hot”?

What we’re saying, however, is that it isn’t even the size factor. It is about overall body shape. Add in the way you carry yourself in public and that is what gets you attention. Yes, guys are impressed as well because you represent to many of them what they would like to look like. Women generally won’t run up and grab a guy unless they are at a club or a party. Girls are also more likely to giggle and talk about the guy from far off than run up to him and compliment him.
I’m a big guy and I don’t see women running in terror when I wear a tank top. Most of them want to talk about it. I must get into random conversations about it on a daily basis and, like I said, I’m not even “ripped”. That may also be a factor. Women don’t like that “contest look”, but they do seem tpo like muscle mass and there isn’t exactly a size limit unless you look disproportionate or “freakish”. I don’t think I look like a freak yet.

Exactly, and once they have been “taken” they usually say they can’t go back to the other guys, guess it doesn’t get their stinkbox wet anymore
p.s. im going for more of the brad pitt in “fight club” physique…which i dont think anyone in this forum can make fun of in any way…fuck eminem he doenst look like he went to the gym a day in his life…maybe just a few situps and pushups…
You keep using extreme examples for the muscle side. Mr Olympia… most of us that lift or build our bodies don’t want to look like a 300 pound Mr. Olympia.
We much prefer the 200 to 250, fifteen percent bodyfat hard muscled look. Think Frank Zane, Steve Reeves, Arnold, Stan McQuay, type of physique.
I think most guys deep down (not all) would prefer a physique like this as would most women. It isn’t going to the extreme grotesque level and it has an elegance and look of power that demands respect and openly displays ones commitment to being a cut above the norm.
The problem is even to reach this level (not the Olympia) requires at least a few years of hard work, dedication to nutrition, consistency in training, learning new ways to stimulate growth.
Most people don’t have the drive discipline or patience for this and end up giving up to their Eminem physique and finding arguments to rationalize their surrender to mediocrity.
Me, I like having 17 and a quarter inch arms and the attention it gives from either guys giving me props in the gym or girls when they openly admire them at times while in the same company as their out of shape significant other.
And, my goal is another inch to reach that milestone of the great eighteener.

I think a lot of women like muscle but not extreme muscle. Anything taken to extreme can be a turnoff.
Football player big is one thing, bodybuilder big is another.
In a similar fashion, I think a lot of guys like a toned woman, but generally not a professional female bodybuilder because it is too much.
I think excessive muscle is generally unattractive to both males and females.
Of course T-Nationers don’t represent the average population and will have different views on acceptable levels of muscularity.

Well said. I think being lean is more important than being hugely muscular. I’m not saying skinny is best, but that there needs to be balance. Would you rather be 180lbs at 8-10% bf or 210lbs and 15-18% bf? The powerlifters here will disagree and call the lean guys wimps, but the original post was wondering why the youngsters today prefer the slim-shady look to the competitive bodybuilder look.
Hey, at least the kids are in the gym trying to do something healthy and not plopped down on the couch with a bag of chips watching MTV or out on the street getting in trouble. Lifting, regardless of goals, requires discipline. That is something many parents, most schools, and all TV “role models” eschew.

This is a bodybuilding forum. Unless someone is very short or damn near contest shape, 180lbs isn’t impressive. It took weighing 210lbs at @15+% body fat to get to over 250lbs. This is a progression and a lifestyle, not a destination.
