Hey guys just wanted to know from the forum which is rated higher for overall back development.
Which would you place 1st in your back workout (in terms of order of performing exercise)? Reason I ask is because deadlifts are very taxing, for this reason do you place them 1st or last?
And what would you guys find more impressive a 600lb deadlift or 10 strict pull ups with a 45lb plate between the legs? (I’m nowhere near either, to avoid confusion)
600 lb Deadlift would be way more Impressive then 10 reps with a 45 lb plate, For weighted Pull-ups I’ve done 145 lbs 5 times, and 404lbs total; 200% of my bodyweight once.
Although I can’t do 600 lb DL, 405 is my max.
For greater back development I would say both, they do seprate things one can’t replace the other. In which order I do DL on Legs day.

You have short arms don’t you?
I don’t think so? From tip to tip my arms are 75 inches I’m 71 inches tall.
I think a 600lb dead is seriously about 20x more impressive than 10 pull-ups with a 45…But I guess that is from a guy who can only Deadlift like 615, but I’ve done 2 Pull-ups with 205 hanging from my waist at a Bodyweight of 225…
As far as development, i think it depends on the lifter. Then again, i really don’t know much about development.

go to gym, work up to top set of deadlifts, go home
If I was a bodybuilder I wouldn’t do deadlifts at all (most everyone in my gym doesn’t deadlift but a fair few squat - there’s some pretty impressive physiques in there)
deadlifts first, as it’s a compound power lift and will get the juices flowing, which benefit other lifts later on in the workout
if it hasn’t already been said, for the heavier dudes, 10 strict pull-ups with 45 plate may be more impressive. because as one who already pulls over 600, but still cant get 1 strict pull-up with chin over bar, so it’s all relative.

But honestly deadlifting and pullups are about as different as squats and calf raises. Yeah both those things “work the legs” but they have far different applications.
i wouldn’t say that exactly,
-calf raises are isolation /bbing exercise
-pull-ups are compound, work lots of muscle groups, just like DL
-pull-ups are almost as bad ass as a big DL

Pull ups are an isolation exercise compared to a DL. The only muscles a DL won’t work in the body are the chest, upper arms, and anterior deltoids. Even my neck and face muscles are straining on a max or ME set of deadlifts.
Do DL first one day of the week and pull ups first the other days of the week (2-3 sets as a warm up) and you will see your pull ups go thru the roof…and your bench will probably take a nice jump too!
Deadlifts first my friend!!! for most people their highest lift is the deadlift. it’s also awsome mentally because either you can pick that shit up or not. u against the weight. no pussy footing around with unracking, a spotter, or bullshit eccentric phase. after all your deadlift sets, do light squats superset with pull ups!

Um… if you’re going heavy, I would suggest you get a spotter so you don’t fall on your ass.

I agree with what others have said that the 600lb deadlift vs. 10 pullups w/45lbs is going to depend on the person’s body structure. Because of that, which is considered more impressive will also probably depend on that as well. I think there are probably more people that can do the 10 pullups than can deadlift 600, but that’s just from my experience and most people don’t train for a max deadlift.
Personally, I have long arms (6’3 wingspan at 5’11), so the deadlift has always come easier. My best was 560 in a powerlifting meet at about 190lbs, but I could probably only get 2-3 pullups with a 45lb plate. I’ve done sets of 5-6 with one strapped to me, but those could hardly be considered strict and I doubt my chin cleared the bar.
As for building the back muscles, this will again depend on arm length. Pullups tend to fry my biceps more than anything because of my long arms. Deadlifts tend to build up my traps because lockout is the limiting factor, but someone with shorter arms who has to bend down farther to reach the bar probably wouldn’t see the same growth in their traps because the bottom portion of the lift would most likely be the limiting factor.
I’ve been doing Wendler’s 5/3/1 and doing heavy deads with atleast 100 pullups a week. Definitely would put Deadlifts above pull ups for back development. I’m a fan of doing both, though. They’re both great exercises nonetheless.

To date I have not placed deadlifts and pull-up variations in the same session. I find deadlift variations taxing as it is. Deadlifts have either had their own day or done with legs (when doing Romanian etc). They are both tremendous exercises and both are a staple part of my program. FTR I have never placed DLs or Pull-ups at the end, they are usually A1 or B1 exercises.
Between both your comparisons of the 600lb DL and BW+45lbs both are very impressive. Hope you achieve both. Although something tells me if you can do a 600 DL, you’ll be able to do more than BW+45lbs for a set of 10 pull-ups
