waterboy-- Yes, dumbbell deads can make a difference, as can shrug bar deads and all other variations. With DB deads, you’ll need some adjustable Olympic handles though because it’s easy to grow out of the dumbells available in most gyms.
Several things. You could switch to Sumo style deads. If the tape doesn’t stick, try going around the leg above the calves and at the ankle, then going vertical between these to create a tape “shin guard”. As for the soccers shon guards, I’ve suggested these at several different forums, and the consensus has been that while they aren’t legal for competition, they do allow for full range of motion and will protect the shins well.
