As an alternative to breaking out my old hockey shin guards does anyone know of a piece of equipment to protect the shins while deadlifting?
And don’t chime in with the" real men wear shorts while deadlifting" crap. I’m sick of picking scabs off my shins and I think I would get in a more productive lift knowing I wasn’t about to rip the hair off my legs.
how about wrapping the bar w/ small hand towels? Haven’t tried it, however.
ever thought of using talc on your shins before you lift?

I have been considering this also. I am sure others in the gym don’t appreciate my blood on the bar… It seems everytime I do it I rip the skin off. Even if the bar just brushes against my shin. I tried to hold the bar out further and I end up going on my toes and can’t lift anything.
Try baby powder, just make sure you wipe your hands before trying to grip the bar. Good luck
It’s a fact: Chicks dig fucked up looking shins! Take a 2 liter cola bottle and cut the top and bottom off. Then cut it down both sides. Wear long socks and slide one piece in each sock. You should then have some cheap and effective shin guards. I have never done this because I like gnarly shins, but I have seen it done and it works.

Powder and talc are not going to prevent the rough part of the bar from rippin up your legs. thanks anyway.
Someone needs to invent a lifters shin guard. You know something colored black with a scull and crossbones on it. Add a hockey mask and walk in to a gym and no one will bother you.

That would create a lot of friction - don’t think it would really work well. Unless there was something slick between them and the bar’s knurling.
I’d go with baby powder. Or, if you’re not competing, you could use a more Olympic-style deadlift.

If you’re pulling so far back into your shins that talc doesn’t significantly reduce the tearing, there’s a lot of wasted effort in your pull. Maybe positioning your shoulders a little further forward would work better if it fits your leverages.
Just a thought, may or may not work

I have not looked lately but there used to be cheap soccer shin gaurds that you just straped on. They were just the gaurd with a velcro strap. That would be perfect… Of coarse it will look retarded.
As one of about four guys that dead lift at our gym I am not sure I care.
I, too, always have bloody shins from deads. And based on the ideas above, I might have a solution. Wrap the bar inside your grip with a smooth plastic sleeve, like a pipe ID tag. I’m going to try it out next time I do deads (Friday).
After 18 years of rugby I am used to having my shins mangled.
I have been doing a lot of deads lately and my shins are torn up.
Chicks dig it.
Long thick socks is all I use.
If that isn’t enough for you maybe you can get somebody to check your technique. Maybe that is the problem?
Dude, try athletic tape. Run a strip down each shin and secure it by wraping strips around your lower leg at the top, bottom and one or two in between. Learned this trick from an OL buddy and it works great. Talk about getting some looks from people - clouds of chalk, tape on your shins and the sound of iron hitting the floor. I love deadlift days…
Maybe wearing kind of baggy sweat pants.
Even if it catches on them, it’ll just pull them up and only the sweat pants will be rubbing on your shin.
I don’t know, that coke bottle also looks like I good idea.
I’ll usually wear jogging pants on my DL days and it seems to help quite a bit. I wear the baggier, heavy addidas ones and I hven’t had much trouble.
However, something about walking around the gym with scraped up, bloody Shins really freaks people out Some of the looks you get are priceless.
Take your knee wraps and wrap your shins with them…I was given this tip awhile back and it works great.
A side note on the wraps…I went out a bought a cheap pair of knee wraps from Champs Sporting Goods. These aren’t the quality you’d get if you ordered from dave tate, but you’re only using them on your shins. They also have a velcro strip which helps hold them in place better
Ive heard from a lot of people that they have bloody shins from deadlifting. is this common? I dont have that problem, but maybe its the length of my limbs… maybe its my form. I have been told that my form is pretty good by some powerlifting types, and i follow the basics. shoulder width stance, grip the bar, back straight and chest up, drive through the ground with my heels, pull my shoulders back and drive through with the hips.
this is a stupid way to ask this, but here goes.
if my shins aint bleedin, am I messing things up somewhere?
ive been doing deads for years, no back problems or anything, but im just wondering.
sorry if i hijacked this one fellas.
