Deadlifting Shin Guards

I too was leaving blood on the bar, the floor and my legs while deadlifting. Now I wear sweat pants on dead days and duct tape the knurling on the bar. No more problems. 'Course I do workout in my home gym.

Ive heard from a lot of people that they have bloody shins from deadlifting. is this common? I dont have that problem, but maybe its the length of my limbs… maybe its my form. I have been told that my form is pretty good by some powerlifting types, and i follow the basics. shoulder width stance, grip the bar, back straight and chest up, drive through the ground with my heels, pull my shoulders back and drive through with the hips.

this is a stupid way to ask this, but here goes.
if my shins aint bleedin, am I messing things up somewhere?

ive been doing deads for years, no back problems or anything, but im just wondering.

sorry if i hijacked this one fellas. [/quote]

I agree with you…I’ve never had the issue. Now I’m wondering if I’m doing DL’s right…

I’m interested to hear what people say…

I only have the problem when I deadlift standard. If I go Sumo I don’t have the problem.

I’ve been taught and have read that the bar should just about scrape your shins during the movement. If they come close and don’t scrape its fine. The reason why mine scrape is that I’m short and have shorter arms.

Plus, by dragging the bar up my shins it helps me keep good form. If I get to front-heavy then I’ll miss my shins and my form will be messed up. It’s a painful reminder to keep good form for me.

Here is a trick from Thai kickboxing. Wearing shorts, kick the side of a tree until your shin is totally bloody. Do this until your leg is s scarred it will no longer bleed. End of problem.

Strange, I’ve trained Thaiboxing for a while here (been hare app 10 years) but nobody have ever sugested anything like that. In the past Thaiboxers used to kick banana “trees” o condition their shins but it’s impossible to get bloody shins from that. I’ve tried, the banana plant is too soft.

Maybe you’ve looked at too many Jean Claude van Damme films

Did you train kickboxing in the States or Asia? In Asia the average kickboxer will fight 5 to 6 times a week for money, usually in alleys or temporary venues while the “audience” gambles.

Awesome feedback!! cool, ok so im a little on the lanky side (relatively long limbs). i guess you could attribute it to my limb length
