Deadlift Replacement

Here’s the deal…I like to do full body workouts that incorporate as many compound lifts as possible. The problem is that my gym is kind of small thus making it hard to perform deadlifts. I don’t want to be THAT guy who is trying to do deads when the gym is crammed full.

Are there any exercises I can do in lieu of deadlifts? Thx.

If your gym is to small to do DL then I assume you cannot use a 7 foot long BB. DB Power Cleans, DB High Pulls, or DB Rows.

My advice would be to either:

a) Let everyone else move the hell out of the way while you pull.

b) Switch gyms.

There is no replacement for deadlifting.

Exercises in lieu of deadlifts? Sure. Since deadlifts are considered a lower back/hamstring move, you can do Stiff- or Straight-legged deadlifts, Good Mornings, even snatches or cleans that require some explosive posterior chain action.

But none of these takes up less room in a gym than a deadlift. All you need is a spot to stand and a 7-foot-wide space for the bar. You don’t even swing it out or step back from a rack, so really you are staying in one place the whole time. These other moves gain you nothing in terms of “space taken up in small gym.”

Unless you wanted to be directed to a machine, in which case I’m not sure what your gym has or if any machine can take the place of a deadlift. Sorry.

Do the deadlifts. Just remember: if you’re in a Planet Fitness, don’t grunt.

OMG! How could I have forgotten!

The DB Deadlift is the most perfect exercise ever invented! And it takes up far less space than a deadlift with a bar!

I’m yanking someone’s chain with the above, but try deads with DBs anyway. Might fit your needs.

DB deads are the equivalent of deadlifting with a trap bar which, for my particular needs, is superior to using an oly bar.

seriously though, how is there not enough room? can you not to anything there? if you can’t have enough space to stand in one spot, how can you do anything else? squats i could understand, the rack takes up space so maybe no rack. the dl is just picking a bar up off the ground.

How do you perform dumbell deadlifts? I have seen pictures with people hosting their back leg up, others with both legs on the ground performing what seems to be a one armed dumbell snatch.

any advice on how to perform dumbell deads?

I didn’t say I COULDN’T do them. There is space but I have to use the barbell from the squat rack and the dickheads around there don’t care if they walk in front of you, etc. It’s a Cardinal Fitness. If anyone has those around them then you’ll know what I’m talking about space-wise.

I’m on the hunt for a used barbell and plates so I can do them at home but needed an alternative until I make the purchase.

The one with the leg up in the air is a single leg deadlift. There’s nothing complicated about deadlifting with DBs.
