Deadlift: Back or Leg Day?

I have a lifting question: Is is better to deadlift during back day or leg day instead of squatting because I am having trouble putting the deadlift into my training.

What type of split are you using? Most of the people on this forum use the Westside for Skinny Bastards template and deadlift on their ME or DE lower body day. But if you are on a 5 day split like many bodybuilding programs I would deadlift on your back day.

I am currently on a five day split but am thinking about changing to the Westside for Skinny Bastards template. Thanks

what do your current leg and back days look like?

i do romainian deadlifts on leg day , for back day i do rack pulls

Back/light shoulders

Pullups x 3 sets
Seated rows x 3 sets
One arm Row x 2 sets
Shrugs x 3 sets
Upright Row x 3 sets

Leg
Parrallel squat x 3 rep max
Barbell Step-ups x 3 sets
leg curls x 3 sets
calf raises x 2 sets

This is the best thing to do if you’re training bodybuilding-style with Hypertrophy as your #1 concern.

You could also re-arrange your split to be…

Chest+Biceps
Legs+Abs
Shoulders+Triceps
Back+Hamstrings

or something like that so Back and Hamstrings are done on the same day.

Since it looks like you are going for a 3 rep max every time you train legs, you might want to rotate between squats and deadlifts and their variations.

Looks like a bodybuilding split more than something strength related. I like to think in movements(push, pull, squat) rather than muscle groups

Just my dos centavos…

Week 1: Squat heavy; maybe some light pulls or rack pulls- but nothing heavy or even close to full-range.

Week 2: Squat light; Pull heavy

Reapeat alternating weeks. It’s a good system. Even if you just do regular squats and pulls (i.e. no chains, bands, boxs, special bars) you getthe rotating exercises effect a la Westside, and you can pretty much go heavy week and not burn out.

I would do the back accessory work on another day.

Deadlifts work the legs and the lower back (posterior chain). Since all exercises in your back training work the upper back, it seems logical to deadlift on your leg day.

I have had the same question in my head for awhile, but my rationale is as follows:

I have one “big” lift each time I lift. Chest/tris/shoulders is bench, back is deads, and legs is squats. I am well aware that deads work your legs just as much as your back, but I simply don’t like the idea of trying to do squats AND deads in the same lifting session.

I’m in the lower back/hamstrings one day and the whole leg day group of people when it comes to doing a bodypart split. It just seems like the best way to make gains to me. As the deadlift and squat are probably the 2 biggest everything builders there are.

if you only get to lift legs once a week then it wouldnt hurt to have deads on your back day to give your legs another small workout…
